In the fading twilight, a dusky-hued wolf wandered among tall pines. There were no stars to be seen in the overcast sky. The marshy ground sprang up with each step, and he could feel the damp cold clinging to his paws.
He had woken here some days ago with a dull ache in his skull and a foul taste in his mouth. His head still felt foggy and sore, but he was hungry now. So very hungry. His belly burned as if he hadn’t eaten in weeks, when surely it hadn’t been nearly so long.
The first pheasant he spotted fell to his jaws. At the taste of the rich blood, his mind began to clear. There had been a forest. A hut. An old woman who promised to soothe his troubles.
Something moved behind him, and the hungry wolf realized he wasn’t alone. Some small part of him froze up in terror, but he could not remember why he should be so afraid. Instead, he turned to face the stranger with a canine smile, pink tongue lolling from his jaws.
“Hello,” he said to the other wolf. “Are you hungry? I can share.”
The gnawing hunger was difficult to forget, but he did not wish anyone to feel the same.
