Without warning, and with a surprising stealth for someone of his stature, the tall, brown man had drawn closer, not without apprehension, to the treacherous expanse of water lurking behind, poised to strike again. He seized the castaway by the scruff of her neck and dragged her farther still from the treacherous shore. He knew this ordeal all too well—he had faced it himself only days ago.

“You're safe now,” he murmured, pressing his ear against her chest, listening for the rhythm of her heart, the whisper of her breath. She was drained of strength, but she was alive—for now.

“You hear me?” he asked. “I'm Taurenis. I'll help you.” He had been granted his own guardian angel, whether an illusion or flesh and blood, and he would not let another lost soul be deprived of theirs.

Bathed in the blessings of gods and goddesses he did not believe in, Taurenis was nonetheless relieved to see the castaway stir, consciousness slowly returning to her. With no small effort, she managed to sit up. He had watched her closely, ready to steady her should she falter. She seemed as lost as he had been just days before, and though she was a stranger, the sight of her in such a state tightened his throat, dragging him back to the depths of his own misfortune.

When she spoke of witch, a flicker of confusion crossed his features. He had encountered travelers in Brûle-Roche, heard countless stories, yet such talk was foreign to him, like whispers of a world beyond his grasp.

“I know no witches,” he confessed. “And I am no sir, just a castaway...” he added, as if to bridge the gulf of strangeness between them.

“Are you running from this witch, Saoirse?” he asked, intrigue sharpening his gaze, his ears attuned to the tale she carried with her. Still, he cast a swift glance around him—perhaps she was here, lurking in the shadows, that fabled witch.
