No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t find the place where she most recently spent time with Luca. These lands remained so unfamiliar, each place unique in its own sense and some more captivating than others. She wasn’t sure she would ever grow familiar with them. Still, something about this pine forest called to her. One might think that, having grown up by the ocean, she would feel most at ease there. But it was the mountains—the way the waterfalls cascaded over jagged rocks into the lake below—that held her captive. There was a wild serenity in them, something that pulled at her in ways she didn’t fully understand.
It was why she returned.
Now, she sat at the lake’s edge, her orange gaze tracing the steady rush of the falls as they spilled into the crystal-clear water. She could only imagine it, cool and relentless, spilling over her shoulders and down her back. The longer she lingered, the more certain she became—this was where she wanted to settle. And she noticed very few others who felt the same. Perhaps that was for the best.
The sharp crack of breaking branches pulled her from her thoughts. One ear flicked forward, her muzzle following suit. She couldn’t see who it was, but the wind carried their scent as it brushed against her cheeks. She didn’t move. Not yet. She had met no trouble here so far, but Onyxia was no fool. Luck never lasted forever.
So, for now, she stayed still, aware, waiting.
