Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

Rina wasn't sure what to make of the man before her. He had endured hardship—that much she could tell—but the ragged scarring on his body and face gave him a feral look, one that made her shiver with a growing sense of unease. It made the hairs along her nape rise and stand on end. The woman rose onto surprisingly steady feet and lifted her chin to meet his gaze, a flame burning in her golden eyes. “Don't come any closer.” She spoke without hesitation, though her words betrayed her as they trembled on delivery. Rina tried her best to seem unshaken by his presence, but her body knew what her mind didn't. This man was dangerous, much more dangerous than the men she was tasked with arresting in her past.

In spite of his charming words and crooked smile, Rina refused to show this man fear, but trepidation managed to claw its way up her throat as she took a small step back. She knew this was a dance, a game between them. No one that looked like that had good intentions when he called her a beauty and introduced himself so casually. But like the fool she is, Rina forced herself to relax before replying with forced sweetness in her voice. “You scared me, Reagan.” Her eyes softened as she bashfully looked down at her feet, very much resembling a shy young girl. “And if you must know, my name is Rina.”

Smart girl, he thought, to know that he was a potential danger to her. Truth be told, Reagan had meant no harm, mind you, when he decided to follow her scent, but that was neither here nor there and she had no reason to know that. The fact that he even registered on her radar was damn captivating though and it had him paying just a little bit closer to her. She had sharp instincts, the kind that would've served her well in his little… community back when the world was ending. At her, admittedly weak, demand, Reagan slowed, eventually coming to a complete stop a couple of feet in front of her. He respected the lady's request, even if it did irk him a little to be told what to do.

Like a damn coyote, he clocked her hesitancy. That step back was a siren song to him. “Come now, sweetheart, I know I ain't the prettiest thing to ever walk this earth, but there's truly no need for that.” His scars were ugly, sure, a goddamn testament to everything he'd survived, but even a man had feelings, ya know? And getting judged so fast because of the scars on his face? It grated on his nerves just as much as it did for the next girl. She was lucky he was in a relatively good mood and was used to such skeptical responses in regards to his face. “I ain't gonna hurt ya unless you give me reason to.” He added, mostly to soothe her nerves.

When she gave him her name, he couldn't help but taste it on his lips, rolling the syllables around like a fine wine and uttering it with a kind of wonder that bordered into reverence. Rina,” he drawled and then, almost baitingly, he added, “I can keep on walking. Just say the word, darling. But you should know there's a pack of wolves not too far that way—and they ain't exactly the friendly type.”

Rina was no fool, but this man was smart. Calculating. Even though he did obey her word, she knew it was only a matter of time before he'd ignore her wishes. These types were all the same, and this Reagan was no different. The Association trained her well, and she'd put her training to use in this new world. She remembered how to survive torture, pack a gunshot wound, even hand to hand combat. But some of these skills were useless as animals.

“I just, wasn't expecting company is all.” She blinked as she allowed herself to play the role of an innocent girl. Portraying herself as an innocent girl typically worked in her line of work, given her appearance. She just hoped it worked on this one too. At his words, she froze. ... unless you give me reason to. So he would if she did something. Just her fucking luck. Of course the first person she met was just as dangerous as those she aimed to arrest.

A shiver coursed through her at the way he purred his name, each syllable dancing on his tongue like a new flavor he had discovered. Rina opened her mouth to tell him to get lost, but at his words, snapped her jaw shut. “You have got to be kidding me.” She grumbled, lip falling into a pout. There just had to be a bunch of idiots. She had worked so hard to arrest them in her life, just to be reborn in a place where they ran about with no rules. “Then what am I supposed to do?” She mumbled, brows furrowed as she looked down at her feet. Just what the fuck was she going to do?

It was a bit too late for her to try and shift gears and act all innocent. Reagan saw her for what she really was, nothing but a player in a game that had already begun. But if there was one thing Reagan got a kick out of, it was playing games, especially when they kept him entertained enough to indulge in a little banter with his partner. This moment was no different; those acidic green eyes, framed by the stains of oxidized blood, blinked lazily at her, silently conveying a message that was as clear as day: ‘Game on.’

“Understandable, sweetheart,” he drawled, circling around her like a predator sizing up its prey, making his way to the edge of the small stream she lingered by. “Sadly, my good looks tend to put off a lot of sorry bastards.” The unasked question loomed in the air: how bad had he been to earn those gruesome scars, because there was no way he came away clean. No, that would go against everything folks like her judged him for at first glance. Over the years, he had learned to wear that brutality like a badge of honor, but even he knew there was a tragedy behind those scars — a story too dark for most to fathom.

He prowled around her like a hungry beast, all languid movements and unshakeable confidence, respecting her boundary for the moment. It was amusing, really, considering what she could do if he decided to invade her space. Reagan wasn't the type to force himself on anyone, but he certainly reveled in playing the role, pushing limits just enough for them to wonder if he might commit the unthinkable.

Now, he wasn’t a good man by any stretch of the imagination, and Rina had clocked him fast for what he was, cutting through his levity and sharp smiles with the precision of a scalpel. But even a villain like him had standards, and touching someone unwillingly, or harming children? That was a one-way ticket to the worst kind of death Reagan could dream up.

He leaned down, every muscle in his hunched body flexing as he extended his neck, his tongue slithering to scoop up the cool water, feeling its chill surge through him as it slid down his throat. At Rina’s surprised exclamation, a smirk tugged at his lips as he drank his fill, before plastering on a more infuriatingly cocky expression, hiding the genuine enjoyment he felt. Can’t let her know the game was about to shift.

“Not pulling your tail this time, sweetheart.” Though the unspoken addendum, ‘though I wouldn’t mind tugging it once or twice if you’d let me,’ hung in the air. “Had the misfortune of crossing paths with their ring leader, a real piece of work named Sinister.” He turned to face her, exuding confidence as he settled on his haunches, lapping up the water trickling down his chin with casual relish. When her question pierced the air, whether rhetorical or not, Reagan tilted his head thoughtfully, as if truly considering her words. “I got nothing you’d like, sweetheart.” He shrugged with a casual nonchalance, busying himself with the ripples in the water as he awaited her response, amusement flickering in his eyes like a candle in the dark as he watched her from the peripheral of his vision.

rina feared what she didn't know. and at this moment, she feared this man. she didn't know what he wanted or what he'd do, and just that had her on edge. it didn't help that he looked at her like a meal, and prowled about like a wolf about to strike a hare. she felt a cold hand trail a finger down her spine, a chill following in its wake. when he came too close, she showed her teeth in a barely there smile, a warning wrapped with a silk ribbon. she may be uneasy around his confidence, but she'd defend herself if he came too close for comfort.

reagan reminded her of some of the criminals she'd encountered in her time working with the association, men who knew what to say and how to say it. who knew a smile and confidence could get them out of sticky situations. iina would do her best to win this and get out of here as soon as she knew she could.

“did you?” she cooed with a false sweetness, a tone she had used during interrogations when she really needed to nail the guy. “and he just let you go? how, odd.” rina rose to her feet, turning to keep him in front of her. “i didn't expect much from you anyway.” she answered sarcastically, eyes rolling as she shook her head. did he really think she was expecting him to save her? she didn't need or want some prince coming around when she could very easily figure it out on her own.

Reagan’s grin pulled slow and wide, like molasses oozing over a blade. Her feigned sweetness didn’t fool him—not for a second—and that little smile she flashed? He’d seen vipers with friendlier faces.

“Cute,” he mused, voice low, like gravel dragged across velvet. He didn’t move from his place, but his gaze followed her like a predator tracking a flick of motion in the grass. “You’ve got claws. I like that.”

He let the silence stretch just long enough to tease, watching her rise with that self-righteous fire in her eyes, all sharp and stubborn. She was dancing the edge, and he couldn’t help but admire the way she tried to bluff when the cards were already out.

“Sinister didn’t let me go,” he drawled, idly flicking a pebble into the water, sending ripples slicing across the reflection. “When I realized how boring he was I picked my happy ass up and walked away.” The weight behind the words was casual, but the promise was not. “Wasn't too hard But don’t worry, sweetheart—I ain’t here to rescue you. White knighting never suited me.”

He rose then, languid and fluid, like a coil of tension unfolding. He didn’t step forward, didn’t invade her space—but he made damn sure she knew he could. That there were no bars between them but the ones she clung to for comfort.

“You didn’t expect much from me?” he echoed, chuckling low under his breath. “Now that’s just unfair. I give you my best smile, my real name, even keep my teeth to myself—and you still think I’m just another thug looking to score a favor.”

His eyes narrowed slightly, amusement curling beneath the surface like smoke. “Keep talking like that, and I might start thinking you want something from me.”

He turned then, leisurely, as if she wasn’t the least bit dangerous, as if he didn’t smell the tension rising off her like static before a storm.

“But you go on, Rina,” he said over his shoulder, voice honey-slick and dipped in warning. “Win your little game. Just don’t look so surprised when you find out I ain’t playing fair.”
