The setting sun had been breathtaking, a masterpiece of reds, oranges, and purples stretching endlessly across the sky. Kirain remembered the serene warmth it brought her, a rare moment of peace that lulled her into a swift, dreamless sleep. Darkness had embraced her completely.

Now, a cold breeze brushed against her fur, carrying a flurry of snowflakes that landed softly on her face. She scrunched her nose and stirred, blinking sleep from her eyes. As her surroundings came into focus, a faint confusion settled over her. Morning light spilled across the landscape, but nothing looked familiar.

The world around her was cloaked in snow, pristine and glimmering under the pale sunlight. It was beautiful, breathtaking even, but disorienting. Where was she? How was it snowing? Hadn’t it been spring when she drifted off?

She rose slowly, shaking her thick white pelt to dislodge the snow clinging to her fur. A flurry scattered around her as she stretched, easing her muscles. The scene before her was striking, an endless expanse of white dotted with stoic evergreen trees.

Kirain let out a soft breath, her eyes scanning the horizon. There were no signs of life, no hints of familiarity. With a final glance at the snowy expanse, she picked a direction and began to walk. Perhaps she’d find someone, or something, that could explain this strange, wintry world.

The moon mother had walked many days. Searching many more, some into the evening. But this place did not quite feel like home.

Mayhap there was another out there. A place of wondrous snow and peaceful scenery. She hoped it so.

None had passed her on her travels. No one to share tongues with. It disappointed here. Was this place truly so desolate?

Only when she heard the soft crunch of snow beneath fit was her mind changed. There, in the distance, someone moved along her own path.

With a warm smile and welcoming posture in tow, she approached carefully. “You find yourself here as well, I see. Is this land new to you, or have you walked it many days, as I have?” A quick jump into conversation, but that was just her way. Stranger or not.

It was always too easy for her to become mesmerized by the world around her. The sight of snow never failed to fill her heart with warmth and wonder. With each step, it crunched softly beneath her paws, yielding easily to her weight. The sky above hinted at mid-day, but the landscape was barren, with not a soul in sight. The thought sent a shiver down her spine.

Though naturally social, the isolation gnawed at her. Kirain was so lost in thought that the sudden sound of a voice startled her. Her head whipped around, silver eyes darting until they landed on another form, white-pelted and striking against the snowy backdrop.

Her tail wagged eagerly, and without hesitation, she trotted toward the figure, her earlier caution forgotten.

“Greetings!” she called, her voice carrying a mix of relief and excitement. “I've been here for a few hours, I think? This place... it’s so strange. Do you know where we are? How long have you been here? Are you lost? Are there others with you?”

The questions spilled out, tumbling over one another as her excitement grew. At last, she wasn’t alone. Maybe now, she could begin to make sense of this place.

A warm-hearted soul, she gathered. This one was kind and bubbly. Nanuktaaq's smile deepened.

“I am unsure of its name, but I have been here many days. It was my hope to build a village here, but I do not think it is the right place. I have had the thought to move south, but wanted to be sure of my direction before I do.” A bit of an oversharing moment, but if it meant enrapturing the young soul and collecting a potential member, why shy away from it?

Kirain listened intently to the pale dame, her words sinking deep into thought. Days? She had been here alone for days? Questions swirled in her mind like a restless storm. Where was this place? Why was it so empty, so desolate? A chill of dread crept up her spine, but she quickly brushed it aside, grounding herself in the gentle presence before her.

“A village?” she echoed, her curiosity sparking despite the unease lingering in her chest. “You mean... a home?” The concept intrigued her, though it felt strangely distant. “If not here, then where? How well do you know this place?”

She huffed out a small laugh at the woman's confusion. “Yes, a home. My people call it a village, where a community can flourish and grow together. I have found not found this place to be quite suitable. Believe I'll be traveling south to find a new land.” But then, she wondered. Did this woman have a village to call her own. “What of you, then? Do you have a place to call home?”

“That sounds beautiful. A village...” She trailed off, the word stirring something deep within her. It struck a chord of familiarity, of comfort, something she had once longed for, perhaps even searched for, before waking here.

Realizing a question had been asked of her, Kirain blinked, pulling herself from her thoughts. “Ah, no. I'm a wanderer. It's all I've ever really known.” The words were true, mostly. But they weren’t the whole truth, and she wasn’t about to unravel her past so suddenly. Heat flared in her chest as a faint flush of embarrassment colored her cheeks.

Seeking to shift the conversation, she tilted her head slightly. “What do you hope to find, heading south?”

A wanderer, she said. “But do you seek a place to call your own?” Her gaze was still warm, yet now more curious and appraising. This woman seemed pleasant and would indeed get along swell with their numbers to come.

“Ah, traveling south, I cannot be certain what I seek. It is the spirits who guide me, and so far, this place does not call to me. I would take it that the great spirits do not approve. And so, I will walk on.”

“Don't we all?” Wasn't it in their very nature to seek others? To stake a claim and carve out a home, no matter where they wandered? She hadn't had the chance yet, but that didn't dull the longing, the deep-seated need that whispered through her bones.

“I would love a place to call home. Like you, I've never felt any place truly call to me.” Another half-truth. The faintest frown tugged at the corners of her mouth, betraying the thought lingering just beneath the surface.

“Would you... be opposed to some company as you walked?” There was a quiet hopefulness in Kirain’s voice, silver eyes searching the she-wolf’s face for an answer.

Her smile brightened at the woman's words, then her request to accompany the moon mother on her journey.

“I wouldn't mind it one bit! And once I find my haven, you are welcome to stay and call it yours as well.” As she hoped the woman might.

If you'd like, we can fade out here and get a new thread with them together in the highlands? I didn't make too many assumptions in my other threads of Kirain following, but left it fairly open just in case!

Kirain's smile brightened, relief washing over her like a tide. No more solitude, at least for now. “I will follow where you lead.”

And so, she did.

Sounds good to me!
