Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

The day rolled into an evening. Rain littered the ground, hiding the scents of predators from prey. Tallulah stalked among the Plains, eyes narrowing as she focused on a buffalo. It was old and weathered and had puncture wounds that marked it a survivor. She would fell it, but not without help.

This prey had seen days bad and good. It was an experienced foe, worthy of being hunted. Tallulah lifted her head and called softly into the wind. A call to gather, to hunt. The buffalo bellowed and began to move, with the woman tagging behind it. Hopefully instinct would kick in, and the biggest hunters would deal the blow.

The smaller ones were to chase and harass.

The plains were right within Vanderfell's backyard, a vast endless land where the grass was low and the forests were away. Streams gathered, hills to see and many wildlife to gaze at ; she could see the buffalo, that roamed within so. Powerful in form that they were, they were not creatures that anyone could easily trample over — not even she, who was rather reckless, would even try without the ample amount of wolves that it needed. Anyone who knew about buffalo knew that at least five were needed, tough, strong, resilient, they never went down without a fight. But their meat? Was divine.

She was within the downwind, watching lightly of them. A herd, but many strayed about.. Then in the distance she heard the calling, not someone familiar, but someone who was ushering strangers to head her call ; for a hunt was wanted. Orlaith could call them stupid, for that alerted the evils around these parts — not that she met any.. But curiosity came, and when she looked at the bison once more, the warrior licked her lips.

So she came, a brim of confidence while approaching.

He does not know what the call means, not on an intellectual level. He follows it, but he finds himself confused-- until he sees the daemons. Massive ones, several times his size. And Astartes is not a small wolf. He stares down at the herd of them, feeling the disgust rise in him. These monsters should perish. And then he shall devour their flesh-- a fact that should repulse him, part of his brain suggests. But no, for the wolf in him, it is natural to taste the blood of enemies. It should flow through his teeth, slide across his tongue, fill his stomach until he can eat no more.

Blue eyes focus hard on the daemon herd. "I stand by for orders," he says simply. But his hackles raise as he observes. With fangs bared, he knows he wants to charge now. Let the bloodlust abate, though; he won't move without the command.

i'll tweak the hunt a bit to let us succeed!

Normally, a buffalo was too much.

Even for experienced hunters. Even for a big group. This was not a big group. Two others came, when the norm would have been five at least to take down such massive prey. Tallulah would have directed them away from the old buffalo if not for the fact it had tripped and fallen into a deep hole.

The cries of pain as its ankle snapped were enough to alert other roaming prey and predators alike. He would not live another day on that. It worked to their advantage. No longer did the group have to harass the buffalo. It was a prime target to attack and kill. "Let's git it." She said to the party, turning and rushing it.

Tallulah circled the back. @Orlaith and @Astartes were the larger specimens and she let them attack it any way they wanted. If one of them came to help her, they would find the woman grabbing at a back leg. She pulled it, yanking, and distracting it as the two others did as they would.

The daemon is massive, but Astartes has unlearned fear. He walks with blessings, and he is greater than this ilk. He just wishes there was a more discussed battle strategy. He stares for a moment, trying to figure out what to do. Tallulah goes for its heels, and Orlaith hasn't moved yet when he charges. Paws dig into the earth as he roars at the creature with its broken leg. With such a short neck, it surely can't turn that quickly.

He doesn't plan to stay in for long, but rather panic the creature so it tries to put stress on its now-broken leg. Weaving, circling, then weaving out, he has an idea that he'll recover from exertion before the daemon does. Such a large creature surely needs a lot of energy to move. He snaps at it as he passes, but does not connect with flesh. Let the creature panic! Let the creature think he will kill it! Fucking daemons!

ooc; cyp, orlaith is free to re-join but i know you have no muse for her right now! just going to continue so not to stall too much

The other woman - unknown in a name - would not move from her position. Tallulah was somewhat irked by it, why else show up? Just to laugh if they failed? Still, the guy was doing his best to contribute. @Astartes harrassed the bison while she let go of its leg, properly injured now on two out of four. The bison bellowed but its herd didn't come to aid. It knew the prey's time was at an end soon.

A bit sad.

She hadn't really spotted any herds roaming. Perhaps the bison had been abandoned long before then. It didn't matter in the end; this prey was going down. Whether it wanted to or not! Even if she didn't eat the whole thing, Tallulah could leave the rest for scavengers or birds. Her hope had been to gain a proper hunting party but only could work with the pale cream man as the other stood by. She wouldn't let him down.

She raced to the front, passing the man in the process. The bison groans as it is continually pressured, but Tallulah isn't in the mood to be cruel for long. She leaps as she circles it, grabbing hold of its meaty neck. The horns aren't a problem at this angle, so she clings. Draws blood and tears into the flesh. Hoping for a quick but probably not clean end, she growls and tugs.

It's strange how easily killing comes to him while nothing else seems to. He couldn't speak to the women earlier, but now that he's out here, darting between blows, he knows what he's doing. The bison can't move properly, with two legs disabled, and so it thrashes its head at him. But without the mobility of its legs, the horns swing wide. It's going to try to run, he can tell, but how far can it run with the blood trailing down its leg. As Tallulah goes for the head, Astartes circles around to the back. The bison isn't fast enough to follow, and so he finds himself clenching at the leg that Tallulah hampered earlier.

With the full force he can manage, he yanks, trying to force the creature off its balance. But the leg raises at the worst point and lashes out. Astartes jumps backwards with the force, barely avoiding a hoof through his skull. But his jaw aches now. He rotates his jaw in its socket to try to clear his mouth. Give him a few moments and he'll try again--

Ah, seems Tallulhah has it by the throat. The creature swings unevenly and Astartes goes in for one more push, trying to get it to the ground.

The pain felt by the beast could resonate with her if she was not in the thick of things. She was an empath sometimes. Not always; she tried not to shift to feeling sympathy for food. It would only end badly. Having to thin a herd or pick off a weakened animal was something natural. She tried not to be cruel about it.

With the man attacking the back, she focused on the front. The blood pooled as she bit down, snapping and snarling and tearing. If they had more wolves, this would go faster. Alas, she was forced to end things rather brutally. The man managed to even things out a bit; at least she didn't have to worry about it alone. The bison slowly faded in strength, falling to the ground.

She clung on even as it bellowed the last call. Perhaps asking for help. Her heart hurt. Tallulah did not let go until the beast was 'slain'. Jerking free of the meaty neck, she glanced to where the man was. "Ye okay?" she asked, breathless. She swore she saw the leg kick out and connect "thanks fer the help" she added, gratefully "take yer spoil."
