Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

He was a little bit tired of it. All of the canoodling and the easy to see romantic garbage going on between @Hades and @Persephone, it was all just a little bit too fucking much. He was jealous.
There. He thought it. He was jealous.
He didn't remember feeling like that. It felt like he was a little bit too old to be really feeling these types of vague dissatisfactions with people he loved. Persephone seemed good for his stick-in-the-mud brother. And, for whatever it was worth, he seemed stabilizing to her. It was only snippets that he had seen from their...whatever it was, but it was enough to have him convinced it was a good thing.
Things felt very lonely when they weren't around. He was not a fan. He wandered along the river that ran through the forest. Its waters were true, striking harshly if one dared to step foot in this chill season. He stopped to look for fish, and found them fast in a shallow portion of the river. The shining scales of trout glinted at him, tempting him to wander in. He did, finding his footing unsure on the slimy river rock coating the bottom. Wobbling, he looked up to find someone familiar.

Red eye roved the god’s form, severe and cold. Standing opposite him, across the river, the Fate found herself staring one third of the Triarchy. How was it that she had found Dionysus the Twice-Born and Poseidon the Lord of the Seas but not her sisters and not her shears? Who was it that so twisted her own fate, dropping her in this mortal realm with nary an explanation?

“Lord Poseidon,” She said, Greek shaping her words, a frown carved across that ugly maw. “Why is it that you have called me here? Apart from Clotho and Lachesis?” There had to be a reason, had to have some Divine pulling threads they ought not to have been touching. When she found out who it was, she would be sure to cut theirs short, shorter that it had ever been intended.

A red woman appeared. He didn't recognize her. She was ugly. She had scars all about her face and features, and her voice was gruff and felt sordid. Poseidon made a face and pulled back from the bank of the river, finding himself disgusted at the beast that had appeared before him from the woods beyond.
Poseidon frowned. She called him by his rightful name, but he did not know hers. Not until she spoke of her sisters. Yes. The Cutter.
“Atropos my peach!!!” He answered back, moving forward as though he might embrace her, but did not, thankfully, could not, as there was water separating them. He had already moved backwards right back onto his side of the bank from the water, such that he had to half-shout for her to hear him. “Clearly I called you here for a uh.. a date my sweet peach,” he stalled, unable to find anything else.

His enthusiasm was met with a hard stare, posture rigid and cold. Distant. Though he was the Lord of the Seas, his flippant attitude was not appreciated, not that it had ever been. Of the Triarchy, however, Poseidon was much more tolerable than the errant Lord of the Skies, and less so than the Lord of the Underworld. The latter was perhaps because she and her sisters worked so closely with the man; had he been sent here as well? The crevice of her lips stretched thinner, displeasure rising at the disturbance of routine.

“So you were not the one to summon me,” She assumed, wondering Who? then. Had it been Lord Hades? There was nothing to suggest he was even here, other than a faint tug, a faint feeling. “What are you doing in the mortal realm? And in this form.” Poseidon had never been known to take the form of a dog, nor had she. The Fates had never taken shapes other than their own, for how was she to cut the thread when she could not even wield her golden shears?

 Yeesh. Tough crowd.
Her stare was like a jagged knife she wielded expertly. His smile drifted into a frown, tail awkwardly wagging anyway as though everything was perfectly fine. To be honest, he remembered little about Atropos. Something in him told him she hadn't been quite this... fiendish in the beforetimes.
Poseidon didn't bother answering her conclusion that he in fact hadn't summoned her at all for a date. It was just as well — he didn't know where he would even take her. Her questions didn't make full sense to him. He couldn't remember being any other form but this one, although there were glimpses of things that would have been impossible as a wolf, like swimming with ease in the ocean. “I uh,” he failed. “Well I mean the real question is what are you doing here looking so lavish? How do you get that fur so silky?” Poseidon didn't want to tell her the truth, that he had no idea, and was hoping maybe she might find a conclusion for him.

Her lip curled, a hint of tooth flashing at the Lord. Atropos feared no God, feared no deity, for it was she that decided their end, their last moments, that cut the thread of life in such a way that they could never hope to rise again. Not even Lord Hades could bring a life back once the cord had been snipped; pull them from limbo, yes, but after? Never

Lord Poseidon's inanity only served to worsen her leer, ears flicking backward for a moment before looking around. The forest seemed deep, endless, almost. There was something about it, something that she couldn't quite pinpoint. “Tell me about this place,” She "asked" of him, crimson eyes yet to stray back to his furred form. Why here? Why this form? Why this time? Once more, her frown deepened.

Poseidon grinned nervously, tail waving even still as the Fate sneered at his words. It was her loss at the end of the day. He was quite the catch. If she couldn't see it, well, that was her problem. Obviously she wanted more answers, but if she sought an oracle, he was definitely not the right person to come to. Even he knew that.
“This place?” He asked rhetorically, looking up and around at the trees and eerie air that surrounded them. “Oh you wouldn't like it. It has mermaids,” he said, assuming at random that Atropos didn't like mermaids. He didn't know why she wouldn't like mermaids. He didn't know why anyone wouldn't like mermaids, he just had a hunch about her.
“Hades is here,” he said, more seriously. Being a Fate, he assumed that the two had some kind of relationship. Oh. Would she be jealous of Persephone? Hm. “And a Persephone, too,” he unleashed the gossip. Maybe it would spark her interest, at the very least.

“Mermaids are flippant, foolish creatures.” Much like a few others she knew. Still, Lord Poseidon handled his domain well; it was rare, if ever, that there was some catastrophe that affected the rivers and oceans of the mortal realm.

Her interest did spark at the mention of the King of the dead, her single eye landing upon him with curiosity. Such interest only grew when he mentioned Persephone. “The Dread Queen has found the King at last, then. How the threads of fate twist and twine.” The ruddy wolf fell silent then, head canting as she seemed to detach and listen to... something. Something that Poseidon could surely not hear.

It was a moment before she regained herself, moving to walk through the shallow part of the river, not minding the creatures that avoided her paws. “And the youngest of you. Is he present as well?”

“Yeah!” Poseidon agreed about mermaids, and didn't realize that these were bad things. He realized after, and frowned. “Yeah.” Damn sexy though, unlike this beast of a... wolf. Did she really not know how to have any fun whatsoever? Maybe a date would do her good.
Still standing across the channel, Poseidon stepped into the water and began moving through it as he spoke, quite careful to avoid disturbing the water too close to her. “The what Queen?” he raised a brow, but kept moving like she had misspoken. Obviously she had misspoken. That little honey bun of a girl was hardly something any of them had expected to stick to Hades of all people. She was too nice for her own good. Poseidon worried his brother would end up getting seriously hurt by her lack of awareness. Puppy love at its finest.
He met her at her shallow end of the stream, swimming across the only part too deep for him to touch the ground quickly as she asked her question. The effort tired him, and he panted lightly as he answered. “Zeus is around — I can feel it. Haven't seen him but, I'm sure he's just out sampling the local honey pots as usual,” Poseidon answered, shaking while still in the water once his feet could touch the riverbed.

The Fate did not repeat herself. If Lord Poseidon had not heard her correctly, it was his own fault for flailing around like one of his mermaids.

So the triarchy would reunite here in this realm. Was this to be their new domain? The third sister frowned, thinking that might be the case, as much as she might not be thrilled at such a notion. Still, if this was what the threads weaved, she would accept it.

“Is there any need you have of me, Lord Poseidon?” She asked, casting a look back at him with an empty and scarred eye socket.

It seemed that one of the Fates wanted answers that he couldn't give her. He drew a bit closer to her, close enough to see the horrendous scar that sat in place where an eye had once been. Or, the illusion of an eye. Did she remember turning into a wolf? What had they been before?
Poseidon tilted his head, frowning a bit and studying her with a furrowed brow. He squinted, not eying her directly but instead inspecting her body condition and overall health. She seemed fine, but unhappy. Maybe she had always been that way. “I need you to know you're lovely,” he grinned with a small nod, tail, now wet and heavy, wagging again.

A response that did not deserve further indulgence, then. Paws carried her into the endless forest them, detaching from the god so that she might search for her sisters.

Atra exits.

 And then she left.
Poseidon stood there with a proverbial thumb up his ass, a bit aghast at what had just happened. Why had she even come here if she was just going to leave? This haven should have been as good a stop as any for a weary traveller. They had many a sheltered place to sleep, and the hunting in the forest was good and rich. Atropos offered not even the slightest of smiles before she left. He frowned.
Sighing suddenly, he took in a sharp breath and threw himself into the river onto his side as soon as she was out of sight. Fuck her — she'd put no damper on his day. Not even with her... strange mention about Perspephone. Maybe he should mention that to @Hades...
