Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

 • There is no set activity requirement to write
 • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
 • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

Marsha awoke on the cool, damp earth of the forest floor. Scents of the forest trickled into her nostrils as her eyes slowly opened. It had rained recently, the scent of it still hung in the air and clung to everything around her. She stood slowly and stretched, as if awaking from a very long slumber. But how long she had been there evaded her. In fact, beyond her name, she had no solid memories. No sense of who she was, or how she got here. Not that it really mattered anyway. She was here now, so she’d better figure it out.
She shook the leaves from her russet coat and began to explore this new world around her. Large old trees and smaller younger trees completed the canopy that towered above her as she sniffed her way around the small clearing shed awoke. A fallen log lay at the far end of the clearing, covered in a soft carpet of moss. She could hear the babbling of some sort of small stream near by. Young flowers were just starting as small sprouts that had begun emerging from beneath the leaves. It was indeed beautiful here. Easy to see how one could have come to rest here. As she snuffled around taking in the scents of the forest, a noise caught her attention, a twig snapped, just outside of the clearing.
Marsha’s black tipped ears shot forward, and her front left small black foot lifted from the ground, pointing towards the sound. Her nose flared and a low growl built in her chest. She wasn't a large wolf, in fact she was the smallest of her siblings. Her siblings. Their scent she remembered, but everything else was still just out of reach. It was like a dream, so close yet so far away. Unfortunately there was no time to think on the flickers of a past that lingered in her brain. The here and now needed her attention. She had company. A wolf her size was hardly going to intimidate anyone, but her growl possibly would. She had no idea if the wolf she smelled nearby would be friend or foe....but only time will tell. As spring comes to, the place she visited in the winter was coming into bloom. The buds were now within a light daze, where the purple was shinning through into a glorious view ; the smell dazzling herself, and the sun giving but a serenity of a painting. A mini meadow, blushed into the forest itself — Celnes was glad she came to see it once more as the season come, for she did not get the chance to before the snow had fallen, and the flowers, wilted away.

Yet when she came to, the smell of a wolf rose to her nose that she approached with a curiosity. There was no pack on the wind that she knew of, and much less someone she didn't recognize.. Within the few, looked to be a wary one. Dazzled in black but almost like a Siamese, she thought, with red points. Dainty however, maybe more like a rat if she felt more cruel within mind.

"I do not recognize from these parts, you must be new to the area," the Queen of Elkshire said, smiling lightly from a distance as she approached with light steps.. But did not stray too close.

"I am. to be quite honest im not sure exactly where here is. Or how I got here." Marsha said, her head lowered. This female was larger than herself, and Marsha carefully lowered herself to the ground submissively. She didnt need a fight on her first day after all. "Im Marsha, and you are?" she asked curiously. Her voice was soft and friendly, but Marsha did not move towards the new wolf. Not only was this female larger than herself but she smelled of others, and probably belonged to a pack nearby. The last thing she needed was to piss off a pack on her first day. "Better yet do you have any idea where we are?" Marsha asked curiously

The land itself was like a lackluster event, whenever wolves simply.. Appeared. Around was regular flowers, bountiful in shades of violets as they bedazzled the world itself. The bees carefully coming out, buzzing around them as they hovered through the plants to take some pollen. Even the birds itself could be heard chirping, delightfully pleased that winter had been shed and welcoming the new spring.

"I am Célnes Déorwine," she introduced, a smile upon her face approaching ever so slightly closer. The other oh-so new, and not knowing where they were.. Surely, but another plain-walker. No knowledge of how was the clear sign, as confusion would always rang to these type of wolves. At least she remembered her name, Marsha. The Queen has yet to meet anyone who hadn't remembered that part of them. Her tail flickered, ears twitching to the docile sounds of the critters running through the flora, "you are in Sundance Grove," the name she somehow knew, rang clearly within her head.

"Though the region in general, has no name," she said with a hum in her voice.

"Well, Sundance Grove is indeed beautiful. As is your name. Are you from here? I do not wish to trespass onto another territory. I don't want any trouble." Marsha said. Starting trouble in a new place was sure to get here no where. Her stomach rumbled, and he nose lifted as the scent of a rabbit wafted gently into the meadow. She had no idea how long she had been without food but her slight build did not allow her to miss many meals. But that same small size made her a quick and efficient hunter. Rabbits were one of her favorites. They were quick and agile and made for a delightfully fun chase. Another memory flashed through her eyes, for just a moment she was there, chasing rabbits through the forest with her brothers. She always got them first, despite her brothers being twice her size. They quickly aged out of her rabbit chasing games, preferring larger and stronger prey that they could take as a team. But as quick as the memory came, it was gone, and reality crept back into her senses.
"Im sorry, it must have been a while since Ive eaten." Marsha said, as her stomach rumbled louder breaking the quiet calm of the meadow. "Would you hunt with me? Im not familiar with the area, and would love to share a meal." Marsha asked shyly. She missed the company of another alongside her for a hunt. The memory of running with her brothers had allowed room for a sense of loneliness. On her own, in a strange new place, with only flashes of a past to hold onto. The bushes at the edge of the meadow rustled slightly and the scent of the rabbit drew closer.

"Surely even more once everything fully blooms." The Queen nodded in an agreement, as her eyes twirled around to take the insight of the forest even more. She couldn't help but notice the trees were awfully large, tall and strong that it led one to see the meadow even more through. A laziness wanted to wash over, to take a laying within one of the many sunspots. She had them within her own home of course, but surrounded by the large variety of purple, and not the poisonous spider lillies of home — it was surely tempting.

But there was more important matters, such was this hungry stranger, "since there are so many rabbits, perhaps we can gather a few," Celnes said with a nod, not minding in partaking in a hunt.

That was all Marsha needed, and when that bush rustled and Marsha shot forward like a bullet from a gun. The chase was always her favorite part of a hunt. Honestly the chase mattered more to her than the kill itself. The feeling of her small feet pounding the earth as adrenaline coursed through her system, the scent of her prey filling her nose. It was absolutely exhilarating. Marsha took her first rabbit before he even made it fully across the meadow. Proudly she turned back to her new friend, dropping it at her feet. But the stillness did not last long, another rabbit was close, and Marsha was ready.

The other was quick-footed, she moved with a speed and captured quickly to her prey. Celnes noted it was impressive to catch so fast without a thought, and normally she'd be the same.. Yet there was a tugging feeling upon her gut and a bloating feeling that led to her speed seem to diminish. She felt if she tried to match it wouldn't work well, and only nodded and smiled at the other as she dropped one, and seemed ready to go back to gather more.

The Queen of Elkshire took a different path.. She prowled through the meadow, paws carefully gliding through the array of flowers and trying to avoid any of the branches that were. Light steps that didn't even bend the various flora, and avoided the light beams that let any attention catch through. A quiet, settling in as she would make the best for her presence to disappear as slowly her paws took her to downwind of a tree, and a careful pumpkin eye looking up a prey..

She took the stealth method, for as Celnes hide behind the tree, she made a quick turn to take the rabbit but it's neck and throw into the air for a better grasp. A quick clamp upon its neck ; and it was done.
