Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

After meeting with @Genevieve, she realized that she wasn't sure Vanderfell had any awareness on who 'Windmere' was. Vaguely knew of Elsyium, Shiroshika, Empyrean, Event Horizon.. There were clearly others that couldn't come to mind as they were mentioned so faintly to herself. But felt it was her duty then, to tell the awareness of a neighbor that was relatively close, just across the plains itself it seemed.

Whoever was first really, Orlaith was looking for either @Ira or @Hieronymous.

The weather had been improving lately, subtly, but pleasant all the same. Ira could only wonder how long was left of winter before spring came and rejuvenated the land. Her children had only known the cold, there would be much to teach them in the coming months. Perhaps she should have brought one of the more curious minds with her today to show them how she dug through old caches.

The cold had done well to store meat, but as temperatures rose they would need to clear their stores more frequently. It was a simple task, but it took time all the same. Surely they were old enough to do that much for the pack. Fortunately, spring meant an influx in herds as well. Some mothers may already be expecting in preparation for the warm months. She would need to start looking for any visible signs to ensure they did not overhunt any of their major prey sources.

The sound of steps nearing caused the queen's ear to flick as he left her thoughts behind, eyes soon following towards the source until she spotted Orlaith moving her way. Orlaith. A one-word greeting as she turned back to her task pulling free the leg of a ram from the bottom of the cache. What brings you my way? Ira would keep her nose lowered, sniffing at the meat for any foul odor before deeming the meat still edible and shifting it back to the reserve.

"I have met with a red wolf who spoke of their pack," Orlaith said, explaining. A forested eye to the cache ahead, it still looked relatively fresh but she could see that the High Queen was examining any that were putrid, or spoiled in the mixture. She vaguely remembered a time upon eating one of those disgusted prey and wounded up sick for some time, but she always came back stronger then ever. The stubborn, rarely get sick, though others would say it's stupidity, that cannot stay down for long.. She would disregard anyone who said that, or much less try to fight them.

"She said they are called Windmere, and are directly the mountain across from us, over the forest and plains." Did she know of them, or was this the first? Nonetheless as duty as a guard, she informed Ira of this discovery. It was interesting to think how close they were this entire time and yet hadn't interacted too much until she had met the rosey-one.

Ira listened quietly, never once looking away from her work, though she would pause her shuffle at the mention of a pack. The list of names she did know was relatively small, though none were directly across the way. Empyrean laid too far south, Event Horizon just north of them though in a set of woods. The rest laid far north or at their feet. It rings no bell. This woman, did she name their rule?

Ragnar had carried word once of his family's settlement to the west but based on what little she knew, Windmere did not seem like a name he would choose for his domain. She knew not what he had picked, though she would not be surprised if the pack as a whole was known as Stormborn based on how he carried word.

"She said their name is King Tetsujin and Queen Elowyn, their pack is one that focuses on bonds between man and woman, particularly, in arranged marriages." When the small red rose said she would find them boring — that was correct, Orlaith did find that relatively boring and overall dull. She couldn't see herself with a man, much less of being forced to share a bed with one under the name of 'husband and wife.' There would be no love, and she wasn't prone to such feelings easily.

"The girl was very open about herself and her pack," meaning.. They didn't seem harmful and were quite open to who they were. She counted them as most likely a friendly kind of group, voided of hardships and war. Weak was a good term, but Gen didn't seem like a weakling, just a free-spirit, and very bold. No hostility or aggression came from Orlaith as she spoke of this group and the rose-wolf. Rather calm in voice, for the experience was more pleasant than others.

Well, well, another old-fashioned pack on the wind then. Now Ira was interested and decided to finish her task quickly so she could properly pay attention to the details. Shuffling what prey was still scattered before her back into the cache, Ira ensured it was properly buried despite her haste in abandoning the job. Nothing had smelled outwardly rancid after pruning through what she had already, at worst she would return later to ensure she had not skimped for rumors. Bonds you say? Is that all her lips spared? Either they were fairly simple in structure or there was more to the tale. What exactly she couldn't say.

At the very least she knew of their leaders. A meeting would interest her if they were not still across the way. She did not fear traveling nor was the distance truly that great, but her children were still young and she did not wish to leave their side when it was unnecessary to. If anything, it would be good to note the name for later. Should she find good in those wolves there was potential for allies in all directions of the mountains...something that would secure her children's safety should any threats arise.

As Ira shuffled through what was good and what was not, Orlaith glanced to see if she could spot any that the other missed. Though Ira was always diligent in her duties and doubted that any soiled meals would be looked upon. She seemed to be almost done, and the warrior opened to say more, "She said they came from a land with plenty of packs that allied themselves through arranged marriage." That was the extent of what she got, and couldn't say she knew from how many.. Didn't ask.

Was more confused on their ways if anything. Couldn't understand arranged marriages, much less desire to be in one.

Once more there was little to go off of with Orlaith's news but that wasn't exactly her fault. Their messenger had been sparse with details, be that Orlaith never asked or she simply withheld them from Vanderfell. Had that been the case, she would not blame her. They were strangers after all. Who knew what motives they might hold beyond a friendly face?

Well, many allies once would be a fortunate sign I'd hope, but we know little of the lands they came from. If it was true though then there may be potential after all. One did not befriend and marry so many without an offer to give. Peace may have been a driving factor, but she would hope they hold skills of notable worth as well. A job to look into at a later date, but there were more pressing matters on her mind first. Thank you for bringing them to my attention. Is that all?

The flame guard shook her head, for nothing else came to mind, "That was all." Rather simple within their terms, she thought, but at least none to truly worry about. They seemed carefree enough by her meeting with the ginger, an overall friendly one with a seemingly desire of adventure within her heart. Yet since surprisingly, they were quite close, Orlaith imagined she would see them again, and perhaps then, get more knowledge.

"I will report back if know more about them."

Very well, you may continue with your day then. She would not hold the warden captive with idle talk and pleasantries when she knew both would rather go back to work. The way was still young and with their numbers, there was plenty to tend to before the night. Providing Oralith did not stop her for a forgotten detail, Ira would collect the rotten meat she had pulled from the cache carefully in her maw before turning to go properly dispose of it where a creature or threat might not cross borders to scrape for a meal.
