Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

Grumble

"Most people don't realize that large pieces of coral
Which have been painted brown and attached to the skull with common wood screws
Can make a child look like a deer..."

@Célnes
Grumble had been wandering through the lands, hunting wasn't going as well as she hoped. An odd scent had caught her interest however. Something rotten and gross to most. But to her who had walked through the shadows of the valley of death...it was literal treasure. The smell of carrion could never be appalling or unremarkable to her. For it taught Grumble a secrete few had ever realized. Death was not eternal. Like life, death had it's own foes to watch out for, and that foe was time itself. Time would erase all of deaths marks and accomplishments in this world. Because of this she did not take it for granted, knew that every second counted.

Thus she made for the carcass with haste. Even scavengers had seemed to abandon the kill, a mighty bull elk that once roam the earth. Still, her experience eye saw plenty left that was appealing to her. Jerky skin and marrow trapped in bones with hidden crannies of meat to find underneath. Plenty of ort left in her opinion. Before she feasted she could not help but find herself staring at the skull of the elk. She remembered the event she had attended in Elkshire. These creatures were apparently worshiped, as she was reminded recently with her encounter with Nikitas. Why would they not eat such tasty creatures. Grumble hoped that if she stared long and hard enough that she would find an answer to the question.

For some odd reason, the longer she stared at it, the angrier she got. Why was something that was not a wolf valued so much? More than she had ever been? Why could she not be valued and loved in this way? Being childish, she could not help but stick her tongue at the dead elk.

There was quite a lot about the Déorwine culture that some knew ; yet not all. For one that might be, the sacred love for the elk and deer themselves. Yet Elkshire, diverged just a bit away from what her homeland used to know. All elk and deer hunting may be banned, but it was not always true ; and even she has the desire to go forth and venture outside to hunt for that stray doe. The ban only came to be when the female deer spoke, and she felt reluctant, to hunt in such a divine presence, it simply felt.. Like blasphemy.

Though the most obvious still came to be - the colorism that they hold. While it may be lessened, and for herself strictly to those of more of white stance.. It had been fading. Except, foreshadow as it may be, the Queen would soon know how devilish her children would become with such manners. To control may be as she so desired, and yet a sickly cohabitation to the religion they would hold dear. It wasn't a future she yet to arrive in or know of, just but passing by as they grow older and older..

Sometimes though, Celnes needed space. When she arrived outside of the woodland, the Déorwine could smell that of a Nightwalkers. She approached, "My, a Nightwalker?" and her orange gaze went toward that of the deceased elk.

Grumble had been so focused on her mockery of the elk that the voice of another had not been expected. The large wolf let out a yowl of surprised as she turned herself around to face the stranger. Fear turning into anger as she snarled defensively and proceeded to crouch, ready to leap upon the other. But that spark of defiance left her as she recognized the other from the Elkshire event she had just been thinking of. "Crazy Elk Lady!" She gasped, not remembering the other's name. Just that she had like a million little spawns of evil. She could barely handle one.

She was a pretty wolf of brown shades that reminded her of the mud she dug through whenever she was expanding her cave. Who knows, maybe the wolf was covered in mud too, but she seemed so regal and fancy that it was hard to imagine the other getting dirty. If anything she was like the elders of her old pack, but she didn't have wrinkles?

Normally she would become aggressive with outsiders, but Almight had told her that Elkshire wolves were friends. Thus Grumble's kill switch was flipped off, turning into that of a happy puppy, tongue lolling out with a dumb big smile. She was happy to see a friend. And she would show it with actions too. "Hiya Elk Lady!" She greeted before fearlessly approaching the other to rub and cuddle against her. As usual she didn't know her own strength and would likely throw the other off their balance a little unless they snapped her away. Grumble was still too oblivious at the moment to have noticed the other's interest with the carcass.

'..Crazy elk lady?' Though she didn't comment nor' show a difference to the words, internally the Deorwine couldn't help but wonder why such a words were attached. She did not think of herself crazy, though she supposed to wolves were so used to hunting everything around them, the exclusion of elk and deer.. Were perhaps odd. Though she couldn't help but chuckle slightly at the oddity that was of the others size and strange friendliness, almost like a newborn and yet surely they were not even close to that of a yearling.

Celnes was caught off guard and wobbled off a bit and stumbled, momentarily surprised that a Nightwalker, a wolf was rubbing against her that was neither family or that of a mate. Looked and seemed innocent, but their size was not either of so. She had to re-collect herself and step away with her long legs before truly falling over and ending up in embarrassment. The Queen coughed a bit, and smiled as she asked, "it seems you found an elk caracass?"
