Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

While the matriarch, as of late, was more inclined to keep to the base of The Nameless Mountain, she recognized there was plenty to be discovered within this place without a name. Hydra worked her muscles as she made her way up, though did not stop until the air further thinned. Shaking out her furs, and catching wind of impending snow, Hydra moved toward where the land seemed to indicate it would flatten. While she had not yet reached the top of the mountain, Hydra had made decent headway there... the bridge between the stars and the earth felt small, here. Moving on a narrow path, soon enough the landscape was open and sprawling. A lake cradled between two stony peaks covered in snow here and there could be seen, and in it would have been the reflection of the galaxy above were it not for the season.

Descending to it, the matriarch marveled to see it was covered in a thin film of ice that was so clear, she could see through it. Placing her weight upon it, it did not move nor flex beneath it; she withdrew the foreleg that had tested it, and looked idly over her shoulder. The wind howled, but nothing, nor no one, else. She looked upward now, to gaze at the stars; she sought more familiarity, here. What were the stars her father had told her she could see during this time of the year...? Would they, at least, be found?

Miriam kept in mind the term Bronco had graced her with, 'nomadic.' The more she thought about it the more that she was certain the word was appropriate to herself, and it wrapped around her soul in the sense she knew, it was what she wanted. On the days that was needed she would settle, especially upon illness or fatigue. Though her instinct to explore and discover never did die down, even in motherhood. Though she would never abandon Liliana or Asmoses to feed into that- only when the poison that was from Neverwinter harming herself and her kids, did she have to seperate. More so, did the darkness seep so inside she was destroying those she loved the most.. Even then, Liliana had Mal. She had the father she loved.

Miriam did mention though, where her homeland was. Maybe one day her daughter would go to the origins of her life, and discover about about the Goddess and God. Though her heart still burned knowing she truly had left her daughter behind, even it was for the best.

Going further did she find the mountain Bronco said was their home, of similarity. She knew of Moonspear, of course, being a neighbor to them long ago. Miriam was friends with Toad and Bronco, and vaguely knew of Osiris and a few others. Though while there seemed to be tension between the two, the woman had a more fondness to the other pack then the one she was actually in, and in a way, admired them. Though if she remembered exactly, the two had split and was called Firefly Glen now, and Moonspear at the mountain.

Faintly could Miriam smell the scent of others, the guarding to it. Unknowingly did her paws continue to follow despite tresspasing, in a way memorized by the unfamiliar stars. She grew up with stories on the mass, world aligned and the heroic tales for a bedtime story. Her son, Asmoses, was the most intrigued by them so, and she will always regret not sharing more. He disappeared- and she could only hope he remembers the stories she shared, if he was still alive. So young and frail, Miriam resigned to the factor he mostly had passed some time ago. A child could not survive long without protection.

"Oh," upon aimlessly looking above did she follow a path that led to an abyssal wolf, she sat near a clear lake that was lined with a thin coating of ice. Though so clear the skies above reflected so clearly; truly a sight to see.

"Hello.." Miriam said meekly.

A gentle breezed cause the furs along Hydra's nape to lift, one by one; it revealed to her that not only was she no longer alone, but that there was a stranger nearby.  While some might argue that the scents were new enough to inspire doubt, Hydra would never find herself in that number; the matriarch spun on her heel, squaring her weight with a swiftness afforded only to those savvy in the ways of protecting ones self. Her tail swept over her hindquarters in a deliberate arc as she loosed a snarl; this would be Miriam's one and only warning that if she did not make haste in going to from whence she came, she might never see such a place—or anything else, for that matter—again.

Hello, Miriam had spoken—goodbye!, the thunderclap of her snapping jaws demanded as she then took several strides toward the trespasser, intent on driving her out by whatever means necessary. It need not be violence, but Hydra was never one to shy from protecting her own. This place in particular had Hydra on edge, and her preferred way of dealing with things that bothered her was with her teeth. But given there was no one truly to blame for all of the confounding events that had transpired, Miriam looked to be as good an outlet as any to air her frustrations should she not leave, and now.

The woman was rather quick to remove Miriam, and she was not one to stay as an unwanted presence. As the other snapped her jaws in a territorial matter, her tail tucked between her legs as she scurried off in a flustered way. Paws scattering across the cold floor, and definitely so did the maiden fall upon her jaw rather quickly. Though the pain ignored, and the tears blinking away, she was quick to scurry off. What was thought to be perhaps a delightful meeting was but one of a territorial wolf- one that she has not met in a long while.

Hydra minded her teeth when the other went, only now and then snapping at heels when Miriam went a pace too slow for the matriarchs liking and the path was not one that would kill her. The claim was new enough to grant the woman a measure of grace, and Hydra was harsh enough to hope for her reputation to become one that was not kind. Let it keep others far away and rethink moving past her claim. Acting the part of an escort, Hydra's plume kept over her hindquarters as she rumbled warnings that were far from idle whenever Miriam seemed to slow down.

She need not know what the other was thinking, in that the matriarch already knew: nothing. Nothing at all. There could not be a sole sentient thought within the mind of any that thought it wise to trespass. And so she also did not humor conversation, beyond their arrival to The Dragonsteeth, where Hydra did not warn, this time, but inform matter-of-factly: “trespass again, and I will kill you. Now, leave,” she demanded lowly, and in contrast to her quiet voice came the loud click of her teeth as she snapped her jaws together. Lunging forward to give chase, next time she would not seek to miss should Miriam delay any. Hydra did not think that she would, but prepared her own defenses just in case Miriam sought then to retaliate, muzzle tucked and ears flattened with her gaze narrowed.

She took the warning to heart, and hastened her way to leaving. Miriam branded her very soul to stay far away from this mountain, even if unknowingly Bronco was near, there time together would remain short if it meant to this mountain. She was no soldier, nor' a territorial and had no desire to come near an aggressive wolfs territory.

She ran far, far away.

last from me <3

No retaliation provided, Hydra jogged after her for only a short time before wheeling back to again mark the territory. Hydra found that it was clear (enough) the borders were marked, and felt all the more irate for it... all the same, she refreshed the borders there. With one last look over her shoulder to ensure Miriam was well out of sight, Hydra went on her way to begin her patrol.
