Soft, gentle light filtered through the leaves Lillith slept beneath. As the birdsong above her grew louder, she stirred and her eyes fluttered open. She felt beside her for the other does in her herd, but found only empty space beside her. Where had they gone? She stumbled to her feet like a fawn first learning to walk and looked around wildly, but she was nowhere she recognized. Where have I gone?
There was no trace of elk anywhere, but there was a deeply rooted stench of wolf. Dozens had gathered, though she didn’t know why, and evidence that they were near was overwhelming. She looked down and found that she had stepped in one’s tracks. The woman felt vulnerable, exposed in her solitude, and she quickly scampered into the thick undergrowth where she was sure none could see her… yet she still felt watched… She bleated into the empty forest, hoping beyond hope that this was all just a nightmare and someone would wake her, but the sound of a mockingbird mimicking her call was the only response she received. Again she wailed, and again, until her voice was hoarse and echoes were all that remained of her melancholy music.
While the sun rose, she began to walk aimlessly, her legs stiff and ears pricked to bolt at the slightest hint of danger. Out here there was only her and the wolves… the hungry, vicious wolves.
Her eyes burned with anguish when she finally gave up any hope of finding her family, and she collapsed beneath the gnarled roots of an overturned tree. The fiery colors of autumn lit the world ablaze through her tear-blurred stare, and a thick fog acted as smoke. Whatever would she do all alone?
