Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

For @Reiko.

From his hollow he emerged into the crisp evening, thankful to see that the thaw had made begun to make quick work of the prior days' snowfall. The young druid paused at the mouth of the cave where Ira had first invited him to stay, pastel eyes quick to survey the immediate surroundings for anything of note before beginning his descent into the forest below the summit.

There, mostly shielded beneath the thick canopy of conifers, snow had failed to settle as thickly as it had on the exposed face of the mountain. Home to him now, though he knew to little of the land to feel such comfort in the title he'd accepted for it. Perhaps soon he would find his place among its wolves and feel more settled, as he surely had someplace else losing the memory of whatever life he led before.

He followed the nimble hoof prints of a small deer herd through the pine, and the fresh scent of their musk in the area spurred his anticipation. The newly-named Quicksilver was not strong enough to fell such a creature on his own, though his intention was not to hunt that night. Instead he wished merely to track so that he might report back to the others of more substantial prey in the area, and hope for an organised hunt to boost morale.

The silverwhite stepped out onto the edge of a moonlit clearing and lifted his pale gaze to catch sight of the four young does who rummaged for better grazing just beyond the stream that separated them, feeling content to linger a while and observe.

They wouldn't be here much longer. Druth was resting his older bones, Aerasha was simply enjoying the still lingering snow and lazying about - and with food no longer a concern, Reiko took it upon herself to do her own thing. As the moon hung fat and full over the horizon, lighting up the snow in an ethereal glow - she was there, with a nearly-year-old fawn who wandered these lands on its own. It was strange how the two had gotten so friendly so fast, perhaps it was the lack of malicious intent the deer felt coming from the playful female wolf, but regardless of how it happened, they were now playing.

With a playful bow she lowered her front half dramatically to touch the snow with her chest, the young buck lept and thrust his head all-around in a goofy manner, kicking up snow with his own dramatic kicks. Even to Reiko, this whole thing was strange but welcomed nonetheless. She could only hope that after today, it would be wary of her fellow canids and not get too friendly with other wolves who would see him more as an easy meal than a playmate.

It was a welcomed distraction, even for a little while as her traveling companions rested.

With a pounce, she bounded to the buck once more, he swung his head in a wide semi-circle which gave way to a little harmless wrestling match between the two. No teeth punctured skin, no hooves crushed her bones as they simply wacked one another weakly in childish play - completely unaware of someone who might walk in on them at any moment.

He watched for only a short time, quiet and out of sight at the edge of the forest, as the does carried on with their search for food undisturbed. Only when one rose her head sharply did the watcher withdraw swiftly, silently, for he feared his detection would send them fleeing.

He gave the stream a wide pass, for the grazing deer continued linger just beyond it, though he kept a sterling ear trained toward it. There was something soothing about the sound of running water, and he trailed along the tree line to keep it in earshot - hopeful that the trickling of liquid over rocks might bring to life a buried memory.

With the herd far behind him, Quicksilver continued to pick his way carefully across the snowy terrain until he caught sight of something quite unusual. Through the foliage he could see the movement of another deer, a young buck, and the Winterwhite pelage of another canid as they frolicked together through the snow. Pastel eyes wide with wonder, he kept his distance and made no move to interfere, as there was something endearing about this innocent scene he'd accidentally stumbled across.

The two played for a while, both using different methods that their species would allow and taught them in play when they were younger; and yet, it worked all the same. From the young buck, grunts and snorts with some thuds of his hooves hitting the ground in faux stomps - while from Reiko, soft childish growls while she wrestled with the bigger creature and its spindly legs.

And then - the deer stopped. Something obviously catching his attention; it made the young woman freeze at his ankles. Still, he was unconcerned with her, but something out there had certainly caught his attention; and just like that, he was off. Bounding into the deep woods and disappearing, leaving the little moonkissed girl there in the snow watching as her playmate vanished as quickly as he came. “Byyeee!” Her voice trailed off in the wind, hoping he understood her farewells wherever he ran off to.

Now, she was curious to know what had spooked him originally. Rolling onto her feet with a quick shake of her pelt to shake loose any snow that may have gathered upon it, cerulean eyes scanned the landscape around. “Druth? Aerasha?” She couldn't see anything in the darkness and her nose could only pick up a mix of different wolf scents and various prey - but no indication of the older gentleman or warm cream woman.

When the buck ceased his interaction with the fae wolf, Quicksilver folded his ears back and bowed his head to better shrink himself away from view. He doubted he could be seen from where he lingered to observe, but he supposed it was possible. A simpler explanation was that the scent of him might've travelled downwind, or perhaps the deer felt the curious stare of a predator on his hide and assume it to be a hungry one.

Suddenly the young stag bolted, swinging to the side and disappearing among the foliage, and leaving his playmate alone. Quicksilver's eyes followed the fearful buck regretfully before they sought the face of the strange she-wolf who remained as she glanced around her as though she too could feel his presence.

He considered backing away, withdrawing once more into the wood to leave the beautiful stranger in peace, but curiosity kept him rooted to the spot. He heard her call out not once but twice, names that meant nothing to him, and it was then that his pale paws took a few ginger steps forward.

Quicksilver had to see for himself, this whisperer of gentle creatures.

Revealed to her at last and she fully to him, Quicksilver was rendered speechless as he realised, right in that moment, that a single being could represent the meaning of perfection.

As she called out she waited for a response, for either of her companions to come out and greet her - but no, there was nothing but the vast silence of the woods. The distant snapping of frozen branches, snow falling in clumps, but no response from whatever may have scared the buck away. Briefly, she wondered if she too should flee, if she too was in danger. Frozen in place, she waited for a sign just a little longer before making a move to return to the safety of the duo with which she traveled with.

But just as she prepared to find her companions, a rustling in the trees drew her attention. Nervously she waited, thankfully it didn't keep her in suspense for too long. Out of the darkness stepped forth a silver young man, deer-like as if he were on stilts. Tall, but gentle in appearance. “Oh! Hello there~” Still high on the euphoria of playing with the other creature, her voice was bubbly and energetic. Tail sweeping the snow behind her in a pleasant greeting.

He must be what the buck had sensed, thankfully it was nothing bigger like a bear or something! Then suddenly she felt warm to the face, realizing something extremely embarrassing. “Umm... How long were you there may I ask?” Enough to see them play as long as they did? Was he judging her for playing with another species that they considered food? What if she wasn't hungry, did that make it okay? Oh dear, it was dizzying. Oh if she could melt into the snow and disappear she would.

She was ethereal: aglow in soft moonlight, which reflected from her pristine furs in pastel shades of blue. Quicksilver found himself at once entranced, though nothing could prepare him for what felt like a sucker punch to his gut when she raised her lovely gaze in search of his own.

Were those the Caribbean eyes of a distant, faded memory? The silverwhite did not know, but the sight of her took his breath away.

Then she spoke, and Quicksilver was certain that a frog had come to take residence in his throat. He attempted to clear the obstruction that prevented his response, then awkwardly answered: “not long, I, uh...” Did she know he'd been staring? While she fretted that he might judge her for upsetting nature's balance, the young druid's heartrate accelerated on convincing himself that she thought him some sort of creep.

“I'm sorry,” he announced, embarassed as he glanced down and away into the woods where the buck had vanished. “I didn't mean to intrude.”

At his answer she breathed a light sigh of relief, a plume of silver streaming from her maw into the balsam scented night air as she felt her body relax now knowing she and her little playmate weren't being watched that closely for too long. There was something awkward to think at her age, being a mother now too, to be seen playing as if she were a mere whelp once again by someone completely new.

“No apologies necessary, I'm glad he wasn't just comfortable around all wolves after all.” With a sway of her tail and a smile, it was a concern of hers to begin with a while ago anyway. She took a step closer to the new face, trying to study him in the dim light. He seemed shy, which was sweet. It endeared her and made the introductions a little easier than when with someone brimming with confidence that it often made Reiko feel inferior to a certain degree - or distracted in awe at their presence.

Then a new idea came to try and ease his nerves, to reassure that he was not intruding at all nor did he dampen her mood by arriving and scaring off her playmate. “Were you jealous?” She grinned cheekily, twisting her posture just lightly into a mild playbow. “Did you wanna play too?” Her bow lowered as she postured the traditional signal that what was to come was all in play. Plus tail waving in a white banner just above her hips as she eyed him with a sort of brazen challenge.

Her words did little to diffuse his heightening anxiety, but it was her smile in the next breath that reversed all effort he made to reign it in. Quicksilver felt the quickening of his pulse as it boomed in his ears and the heat that flooded his cheeks beneath platinum fur, enough that he ultimately tore his gaze away to look elsewhere.

The snow looks different beneath moonlight, he mused, eager to keep his thoughts from straying toward something improper. It would not be appropriate to invite himself into this unfamiliar beauty's space, driven by the instinctual desires of a young male to reach out and breathe deep the scent of her. The stars are bright, the river is - ohmygod what is she doing!?

By the time he glanced up again, the pallid wolfess had lowered herself into a bow with her hindquarters in the air. She flagged her tail in invitation, and as Quicksilver's heart skipped an uncomfortable beat he felt like he might just drop dead on the spot. Lured by her invitation like a moth to flame, the druid swept forward to close the distance between them and initiate whatever game she had in mind.

Frozen in position, the tick-tocking of her waving tail only slowed its pace as she curiously waited for him to join or refuse the invitation. Cocking her head to one side, she was definitely curious and confused over what might be happening in his head since it was taking him a while to react. Although the silence and lack of response, she smiled regardless of the awkward situation.

Thankfully the wait wasn't as long as it felt, perhaps the length was simply fed by the awkward feeling sitting in her chest, but eventually the young man approached, accepting the invitation to be her new playmate. Being only just under her third year, the young mother still had plenty of energy and puppy-like traits to enjoy moments like these to ease any tension felt in her body.

No words were necessary. As he approached, it was reciprocation enough for her to signal that the game was on. With a few lithe feline like leaps, she hopped her way closer to him —

just to paw at him on the chest before quickly turning away from him and immediately fleeing in a puff of snow kicked up while bouncing off. “I bet you cannot tag me back!” Her voice rang out as he fled into the thicker woods, weaving through the bare trees and leaving nothing but prints in the snow.

She came forward to meet him, graceful on her nimble paws, and Quicksilver could feel the rapid increase of his heartbeat. His skin felt flushed with excited anticipation of the contact he was sure to receive, a closeness he'd unknowingly craved throughout his whole life. Pastel eyes wide with wonder, with appreciation, he found the fae near enough to practically taste the scent of her furs.

Lavender and fresh snow. He would remember it for the rest of his days.

He yearned for more, to learn her name and discover where she'd come from. Quicksilver considered something flirtatious - where have you been all my life? - but words continued to fail him as he gawked at this beautiful, majestic creature that he only just discovered could exist in his world.

He held his breath as she reached for him, slow-motion, and it was released in a rush when electricity shocked him at the touch of her toes to his chest. She ignited something within him, something Quicksilver hadn't known he was capable of, and he certainly lived up to his new name as he tore across the snow and into the woods after his newest acquaintance.

Overjoyed that he was playing along, the young mother giggled as she looked over her shoulder to see he was quickly approaching. Wow, he was fast! Reiko herself thought she was fast too and was thankful that she didn't have to slow down just to make things fair - no, she could make this an actual race! A true chase!

The little nimble woman was not only quick on her feet but agile too. Making quick turns and zigzagging wildly in random patterns, wondering just how determined this young man was to tagging her back in order to win their little game. Hopping over stones and under fallen trees with easy grace, and only peeking over her shoulder quickly to see if he was still there somewhere.

Using their landscape as her own little wonderland, a steep hill came up ahead and Reiko gladly ran to it with the intention of leaping straight off of it and slide down the slope of freshly fallen snow with dexterity. This was truly the type of landscape that the empress thrived in, truly honing in on her youthful days of playing with packmates back in the day.

Once at the bottom of the slide she stopped and looked in the direction of the boy with whom she initiated a chase, wondering if he too would do the same in order to quickly catch up or just give up here and now.

He followed her through the darkness of the forest, losing her frequently only to find the sapphire gleam of her moonlit pelt as she passed through a stream of light that dappled between the foliage. He'd been struck dumb by this light-hearted and lovely creature; believing himself to possess all the grace of a wild stallion, he lifted his muzzle and lengthened his stride. Having never been a vain wolf, Quicksilver didn't know what it was in him that made him wish to appear so magnificent in her eyes yet pressed on with determination to make it so.

Out into the open again, his breath hitched at the unexpected shift in terrain. A downward slope appeared before him and, despite his best effort to keep from making a fool of himself, he did just that. Quicksilver tried desperately to hit the breaks, but the frozen earth and fresh snow offered no traction.

There was no point in fighting it, so his gaze was squeezed shut and did his best to grip at the ground with his claws to slow his descent and hope that he would not fall face-first. Quicksilver cracked a pale eye open just in time to see the pallid she-wolf waiting for him at the bottom, but not enough to stop his from colliding with her and dragging her down into the snow in a tangle of limbs with a surprised yip.

With small puffs of haze appeared and vanish along with the rhythm of her chest as it pulsated at the same tempo. With an excited flick of her tail she waited at the foot of the cliff for the young man to make his decision whether or not to come and meet her down. However, a decision was not made. She could see him appear over the top of it, but as he came down - it was clearly not a decision all of his own.

Scrambling, clinging, she worried for his panic as he tumbled down the cliffside - glad more than ever that the soft snow would be there to help break his fall as there was really nothing she could do until he stopped all on his own. That didn't mean she was free from what disaster he was brought right to her. He tumbled, she watched with bated breath caught in her lungs, and just like a deer in headlights she was oblivious to the fact that he was tumbling right toward her until it was too late!

Oof! The two collided, a tangled mess of pale fur and legs strewn in an amalgamation of limbs upon the powdered snow. Only when her lungs felt the comfort of a steady stream of oxygen to her body did Reiko erupt in musical laughter of delight. “Well - this was one way of winning.” She squealed softly, letting the joy of play carry her light, airy, and a little louder than usual tone into the wind.

She wasn't quite sure what she was leaning on. It was warm, soft and fuzzy - so she was certain it was the lad, maybe his chest? Lifting her head from where it was resting, she tried to meet his eyes once more. “Are you okay?” She had to make sure after a tumble like that.

The impact hadn't hurt him at all, but he was undeniably dizzied as they eased to stillness in the snow. He felt the chill of it at the right side of his face, and as he writhed - careful not to cause harm to his newest acquaintance with flailing paws, he realised that the powdered ice clung to his cheek and ear. “Ugh,” his tongue poked between his fangs to flick the cold from his lips, and turned to search for the pale wolfess' features as she parted her jaws to speak - only to poke his nose right to her snout as she lifted her head to regard him.

Quicksilver was starstruck! He blinked dumbly down at her, unaware of her frame pressed so close to his as he lost himself in the liquid azure of her wonderful eyes. “I...” unable to form words, he stammered: “I... I...”

Holy crap.

He swallowed, perked a silver ear to catch her question, and the gravity of their predicament fell on top of him like a tonne of bricks. “Oh!” Quicksilver exclaimed, mortified that this pristine creature had been forced to cosy up to his flank, and he felt himself sway as he glanced away. “I'm fine, I... here,” he shifted, indicating he was preparing to gather himself, “let me help you up?”

As his nose pressed against her snout suddenly while they turned to face one another, she couldn't help but offer a bright, wide-eyed, owl-like glance with a bright warm smile tracing its way across her pale lips. His nervousness only came across to her as nothing more than just being shy - never would she think he was awestruck instead. Perhaps the way she interacted with him would have been different if she knew his true feelings behind the jittery, uncertain, way he carried himself right about now.

“Thank you~” She chirped, gratefully accepting the young man's offer to help her up off the ground shortly after he himself got up. Once up, she shook off the snow that clung to her pelt during the tumble in their collision, an easy shake as a dusting of glittering snow fell back onto the ground.

“Well —” She pondered, not done teasing or playing with the boy as she was simply having a wonderful time. Wanting to linger in this pleasant moment a little longer before returning to the anxiety and worry that constantly plagued the mother wondering where in the world her children could be. “As your prize for winning, I suppose I could give you my name.” Lifting her head up to the moon in a dramatic, prideful gesture, she peeked one azure eye to him to observe his reaction and offer a cheeky smile.

“Reiko Izuka.”

He reached for her, aiming an encouraging bump of his snout to the side of her neck and aligning himself alongside her to support should she stumble. It seemed there was no need of his assistance, however, as the pallid fae was swift to find her feet and set about ridding the gathered snow from her pelt.

Quicksilver stepped aside, not caring much for the clumps that clung to the longer furs of his throat, for he was more concerned to have made such a poor impression on this beautiful stranger. Silver ears fluttering nervously atop his narrow crown, the young druid emitted a soft and anxious whine as she focused once more on him. She didn't seem angry about the collision, so his white-tipped tail waved hopefully as her attention returned to him.

His smile was a bashful one, and he laughed a little, awkward, at her comment regarding his "win". “Reiko,” he repeated her name gently, not brave enough to attempt its entirety but finding it to be as lovely and exotic as its holder; “I'm Quicksilver.” Oh, how weird it felt to introduce himself with a calling he'd only just received! That would take some getting used to.

Though she was not as weak in the legs as she was days ago, where spindly legs felt wobbly and newborn - the assistance was appreciated should they collapse from being overused after such a long slumber. A good night's rest was necessary after all this play, before they headed out to find somewhere warmer for Druth and hopefully to find her children.

Snowy ears swiveled forward to catch his timid parroting of her name. It had been clear already that she was exotic in comparison to most who had similar dialects in their names. So far none shared a familiar accent in their tones which felt both alien and comforting. Knowing that none of these individuals would know of the beast of a man who caused her family such anguish was relieving.

“Wow!” She breathed. “Such a fitting name!” Did his parents know he would be so quick in order to name him? They must be so proud that he lived up to their expectations. Oh how embarrassed she would be to learn that wasn't the case at all and she was simply assuming at this point, thankfully she kept the personal, invasive questions to herself until further notice.

She commented on the appropriateness of his name, and his awkwardness heightened to a new level. It was all still so new to him that he couldn't feel the desire to agree with her verbally, though his smile was grateful for her acknowledgement. He supposed he was pretty fast, but there was so much else about himself that he failed to recall.

“Are you... from around here?” Quicksilver asked, eager to change the subject and more enthusiastic to learn more of this pale dove who'd happened to cross his path.

Eventually the quickened breath slowed in her chest as the excitement and chase had faded over time, feeling the soothing sway of snow all around them lull her into a sense of ease. Finally, she was able to breathe just as she did before and shake her head no at his question. The moment slow, sluggish, and a little saddened already by her answer for him. “No, I woke up in the Tundra a few weeks ago - I now travel with a few others, for now, in search for my children.”

Her eyes met his again, wondering if he would be the first to judge her for being such a terrible mother - completely oblivious to his true inner thoughts and feelings. “We are just passing through, tomorrow we leave to continue the search.” For not only the missing youth but also a place for Druth to call home finally. The mountains were not for him as they were still too cold for his aging bones, so soon they would travel down the rocky terrain into what she thought she saw would be plains down South of here.

The inner turmoil he initially felt in the presence of Reiko Izuka was nothing compared to the emotion that came down on him like a sledgehammer when she announced her reason for being in the area. Quicksilver's ears folded back in disappointment to learn how her appearance there was meant to be a brief one, though he felt his heart constrict as she carried on to share that her children were missing.

He emitted a soft whine then, a pained one for missing cubs. “I...” the silverwhite started, and stalled as he thought carefully - suddenly fearful of saying something inappropriate. “I'm so sorry.” For what you must feel.

Quicksilver was a wolf without offspring, without a partner, without his family - if he had any, he could not even remember their faces or their voices. If he had anyone to hunt for, he felt that he'd go to the end of the earth to find them. His mind conjured another thought, one that encouraged him away with her to offer another set of eyes, but he encouraged it away as swiftly as it had come. Quicksilver had already made a promise to support Ira, and he was unprepared to abandon her.

If she was to be honest with herself, the young mother only assumed her children were around here too. As far as she knew, they weren't here. The twins could be nothing but a figment of her imagination, a part of her past self that didn't follow her into these new strange lands. And yet, her motherly instincts told her to keep looking. To hold onto the beliefs that they were here, looking for her just as she was with them.

She smiled softly at his apology, feeling the shared grief between them and there was simply no need for any more words. Never would she have expected anyone to offer to join her on her search in the first place, and for this one too to offer his services would be incredible. But not everyone could, or would. “Are you?” She paused, her smile grows just before she clarifies her question. “I mean, are you from around here?” Awkwardly she giggled, trying to shove away the sadness of the heavy topic of which she had brought up herself.

Reiko offered no worded response, instead having mustered a soft smile to acknowledge what he'd said. That was alright - he couldn't even begin to imagine the pain in her heart to have been displaced from her children. He sympathised, truly, and wished he could just close his eyes and conjure the whereabouts of the dove's offspring to save her the worry.

At her question, Quicksilver blinked. Was he... sorry? He felt a beat of fear in his chest, and held his breath for a long moment until Reiko clarified. Only then did he exhale, and he emitted a huff of awkward laughter: “well, I... sort of. I woke up in this vast snowy place further North and -” The silverwhite paused, certain that she'd think him crazy should he share his tale of the pallid buck that showed him the way, before reminding himself of how he had seen Reiko herself frolic with deer. “And a great white stag led me to safety through the blizzard. I found these mountains, and others of our kind. We make our base close by.”

Never did she think that what she said would cause such internal turmoil in the young man's head. Carefully she picked her words and sentences, tried to make sure her message was clear despite the little pauses, but it seemed that Quicksilver might be a little more anxious than Reiko is on a normal day! If she had noticed, she would have probably laughed a little. Instead, she was none the wiser.

Listening to his little story, she could only imagine what he meant by 'snowy north'. He mentioned a white stag bringing him to safety from a blizzard, a story that had her tail begin to beat to a happy rhythm. “With Ira, right?” She imagined the woman, Ira, was one of these beings he was mentioning about staying with.

“I was raised in a pack who admired white stags and does, we lived in peace with them for generations - you must be pretty special for one to appear for you like that when you needed guidance.” Reiko wasn't the religious type, but she was raised to believe that there was something special and lucky with the white pelts that matched that of their family.

To them, it was like both wolf and prey found harmony - well, until that harmony was destroyed by her sister. That was a story for another time.

He was surprised to hear blue-furred Ira's name fall from Reiko's lips, and his ears pricked forward in recognition. “Yes,” he confirmed with a soft smile, a gentle wag of his feathered tail, before he quickly added: “and a few others.” It was important to him, suddenly, for reasons that were clouded, to ensure that the dove be informed that he and Ira were in no way "attached".

She was content to bury that topic, and listened with wide-eyed wonder at the snippet of information she shared regarding her family's beliefs. Quicksilver could understand their appreciation for the magic of nature, and it was a curious thing to learn that the very being who he believed saved him in the snow was linked to the one who presently stood before him.

“I wonder,” he started, “if he meant for our paths to cross this day.”
