Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

Mainly for @Crux , but any other EH member welcome to crash :D

Aimi had really outdone herself this time around -- both in a positive and negative way. Who knew that the stubborn little sea otter would actually find it in herself to leave those flat plains and actually do so exploring? The she-wolf felt rather proud of the feat and even grew cocky along her journey -- "Well this isn't hard at all!" she'd say, or the infamous "I can do this with my eyes closed!". Hah! This whole "exploring biomes" thing was a walk in the park, and there were no flying bears, brain-sucking mosquitos or annoying locals to be found either!

Except for the obvious danger amidst; the snake bite attached to her hip. Aimi wasn't aware of what a snake truly was, and only observed them from a distance as creepy land-crawling eels. She managed to rip the scaly vermin from her leg and kill it not too long ago, but that did not stop the venom and throbbing pain to subside from the lower parts of her body. Only within blurred vision and numbing muscles would the otter realize this was more than just a regular bite, and her breath would falter just before collapsing into a pile of red leaves.

Consciousness did not leave her -- only the panting and forcefully open eyes kept Aimi awake. Whatever was coursing through her veins hasn't killed her yet, so she needed to find a way to move away somehow....

His trip was to begin in the morning, and yet he could not stop himself from roaming his land. Restless paws led him through the red-leaved forest, brushing up against the trees and every so often snagging some of his thick coat in the short branches of bushes he pushed through. Deep within his run rolled nerves, wondering about the things and wolves he would find going east. Perhaps he would finally come across some of the Great Beasts he remembered from his travels in his youth and had yet to find hide or hair of here.

 Perhaps he would find nothingness.

He wasn't sure which he was afraid of more.

When the starlit king saw the grey-brown form moving sluggishly in the distance, he paused and watched her with intense curiosity. When she fell, his eyes widened and he leaped forward, towards the prone form. Scents caught up to him and he waded through them and recognized the faint scent of snake mixed with the girl's own scent.

She had been bitten. That was the only explanation for the way she lay still in the leaves. He could see she was breathing, but only just. Unsure of what to do, being nothing of a healer himself, he lifted his head and howled: “I need a Terran here immediately - snake bite!” He didn't bother to specify that it was not himself who was bitten, but he didn't figure that it mattered. If the misconception brought one of the healers sooner, then it would be worth it.

Terrans = @Satchel and/or @Glacier you're up!

The call that rang out was sharp, clear and urgent-Demanding.

It only barely managed to catch the man's attention from where he was elbow-deep in the river, nose nearly touching the surface of the clear, cool burbling stream, ears flicking dismissively at first at the screech of alarm before the actual meaning of it registered.

Time to earn his keep. Snake-bite, too, not the easiest first show of his skills. They were very hit-or-miss to treat but whoever had been bitten was in luck-This land of a perpetual fiery autumnal rainbow had given up a patch of black cohosh during one of Glacier's frequent scourings of the lands searching for the herbs that had been almost as much of a parent to him as his own mother, the plants that formed his livelihood and permanently tainted his coat with their minty, herbal scent, marking him as their guide, caretaker and master forever.

Out of the river, the lithe form of the small blue wolf darted through the sea of red and white trees like hills of blood-soaked snow, dipping into his large den he'd spent painstaking hours digging, shaping, and reinforcing to snatch a bundle of the potent herb in his teeth, careful with it. As useful as black cohosh was, it had some nasty side effects too. Still, despite the many herbs there were for many an ailment, only but a few would do anything for snake venom.

He headed toward Crux's call silently, jaws occupied with carrying the herb, dark paws carrying him at a brisk lope through the territory.

Once he was close enough to spot the hulking, mottled form of his leader (it felt strange to think of someone as Glacier's leader, but he was doing his best to get accommodated to it) the healer chuffed around his cargo.

Aimi was borderline fucked, and she didn't even know it until she was barely even able to move -- so much for the new scout experience. Though the otter rarely listened to what didn't benefit her, not even when the orders were coming from her own body, and ever muscle, fiber, and tissue that she was able to wriggle protested relentlessly -- move. MOVE. MOVEMOVE DAMNIT!

But of course, her hard-headedness could not beat the slow pull into darkness.

In the midst of struggling, the sandy femora flickered an audit towards the heavens only to hear the sound of heavy footsteps heading towards her, then a howl which followed by another approaching party. The one thing animals did not like was being cornered during an extreme state of confusion and vulnerability -- and Aimi was no exception to that rule. Whatever adrenaline that was left to fuel her veins into flight or fight mode gave her the energy to spring to her feet, and aimlessly snap teeth into the air with a guttural snarl. "不要碰我!-"

Her head swung wildly in both directions. One way towards the larger figure, and one towards the smaller -- but both figures were nothing but dark blurs in the otter's drunken vision, and it didn't take long for those wild movements to make her stumble clumsily on her ass with a sound that was somewhere in between a whine and a gag-reflex. Soon enough, her mind relented and the young fae collapsed once more...

The girl leaped up, snapping at the air and snarling in some language that was foreign to the man. He lowered himself slightly to try to indicate to the stranger that he had no intention of harm, but it was clear by the way that she was gazing at them in blind fear that it was for naught. He tried anyways, “We're here to help,” hoping that somehow, she understood his tongue even if she spoke in another.

He looked at the other who had appeared, bearing what appeared to be some sort of herb. Crux, who knew nothing about herbalism or what plants would do what, figured that whatever it was was to help in this particular situation.

“Just tell me what to do,” he said to Glacier, allowing the more experienced wolf take the lead. He'd turn back to the girl, who had now collapsed. Unsure of what to do, he tried to speak to her in soothing tones, “I'm Crux and this is Glacier.”

If Glacier told him to help to hold the girl down, he would of course attempt do so, all the while attempting to let her know with body language and soft tones that they were there to help and they wanted to take care of the immediate threat. This threat was within her own body and if she could just stop resisting, they could help.

Healing was a noble profession, or so he thought those who didn't actually practice it thought it was. A life of tender care directed toward plants and wolves alike, he'd met more wolves than he could count who heard of his skills and wrote him off as useful but lame, weak, unworthy of their respect.

As a youth, he found it amusing, though Taiga seemed more annoyed by it, and with age, Glacier started to understand.

The scene he arrived to was not a pretty one.

Swaying drunkenly was the patient, young, draped in colors of dust, and dying.

Visibly so. She snapped at the air blindly even while barely able to stand, though Glacier was far from offended by the rude introduction she was making. He really had not been kidding about advertising his skills as both healer and harmer. He'd seen the effects of poison wrench control and eventually life from another's body more than once. Death was an unpleasantly frequent occurrence in his line of work, even if his usual work was to try to prevent it, but time and exposure didn't make it any more bearable to witness.

Glacier was about to drop the herb and whip out his award-winning bedside manner to try to get close enough to the girl to treat her, but the venom did his work for him and for that he was a bit appreciative, watching the girl slump bonelessly to the earth with a horrible sort of gurgle. He stepped forward a bit closer, keeping the girl's face in his peripheral vision so he could bolt if she got snappy all of a sudden. He honestly didn't treat many snake bites in his time. He knew the herb was recommended for snake bites but wasn't sure if it was effective with venom. A quick visual inspection pulled his attention to twin flecks of blood on the girl's fur.

Crux asked for direction, and Glacier gave the cohosh a firm crush between his jaws before dropping it onto the nearest relatively not-filthy rock he could find to continue mashing it, movements practiced, concise, quick. "Make sure she doesn't bite my head off, and we'll need to get lots of fluids into her." He gave a pensive glance toward her. "If she can still drink." He dipped his head, scooped the black cohosh mush onto the top of his muzzle. As beneficial as the herb could be, it could easily become toxic and often had unpleasant side effects even if not outright lethal. He wanted to avoid ingesting it as much as possible. Besides, opening one's jaws and plopping a wad of chewed up herb on someone's open wound was just...unbecoming. Disgusting, if he had to be honest, not always avoidable but still gross.

Glacier turned, glancing toward Crux with an expectant brow arched. He was hoping he could get close enough to smear black cohosh mush amply across the bite wound on the stranger's hip, but he'd appreciate a little backup.

Words were said, introductions were made -- but all of it eventually fell on deaf ears. Voices were echoey and painfully distorted to the point of no understanding, so the sandy woman's defenses were still on guard just as long as the two were close. Her muzzle wrinkled in warning and let out a weak, high pitched growl -- despite the fact that she couldn't lift her head up to do shit in the state she was in. The otter simply curled her limbs into herself with the wolven instinct of protecting ones innards, and would continue to lie on the ground feeling more vulnerable than she was comfortable with...

Light powerplay allowed from here on out. She won't b o i g h t or anything, since she's to weak to move rn XD

The girl growled helplessly, but when Glacier gave instruction, Crux would follow them without hesitation.

The titan moved forward, avoiding her jaws and warning growls. He came around the opposite side of her body from the bite, lowering himself and placing an arm over her shoulder with a gentle weight. He'd place his head against her neck, heavy skull holding against her, just out of reach of snapping teeth. If she attempted to twist to bite him, she would find his arm blocking her in one direction and the bulk of his body blocking her in the other.

He would attempt a gentle, reassuring lick to the side of her face before pressing his head against the side of her neck once more.

“Would wet moss do?” he asked, wondering if they had time to work the medicine into her wound before going to gather fluids. He didn't want to leave the girl alone with Glacier just yet, in case she had a burst of adrenaline that would damage her further and potentially harm his Terran. The yearling was tiny, but tiny teeth were still sharp.

Would wet moss do? "Uh. I've never tried it, but it can't hurt to." He'd never heard of such a thing. Living so northern, wolves either could make it to the water, or they'd eat snow or ice. While it did lower their body temperatures, a healer or two snuggled beside them usually counteracted that issue easily.

Crux helped hold the girl down, and Glacier gave an appreciative wave of his tail and a reassuring smile the injured wolf's way. He didn't think she'd understand, in her pained haze, but he had been taught the concept of bedside manner. The grumpy aspect of her own personality often made him seem incapable of offering compassion, but there was a softie inside those cold blue hues and fiery reds.

He moved quickly, as he had been trying to do all along, swiping his nose across the wound and using his paw to ensure the black cohosh got into the wound. Hopefully, it was help counteract or draw out the poison. He wasn't sure how it worked, he just prayed it did. It would really suck if his first task as a healer for Crux failed miserably.

Checked with Aimi and got the ok to skip her!

Glacier seemed incredulous to the idea so Crux pushed it from his mind, instead following Glacier's orders to a T, quietly assisting where he could. He felt ashamed at the stupidity of his question - after all, it wasn't as if her bones were broken. Then he pushed back against the embarrassment, chastising himself for belittling himself. It was a question from a good thought: What if the venom flowed more quickly if she moved?

He knew little of snake bites but those in the rocky desert had been mostly rattlesnakes, nasty creatures who could kill a wolf.

It seemed that his healer was doing well, nevertheless. While the girl remained still, unconscious now perhaps, she was no longer thrashing and snapping. Her breathing seemed... okay? It was hard to say, but he thought that given time, she would be okay. “There are empty dens on the island, we can carry her there if she can't walk. Close to water and food, until she recovers.”
