what're you after?

The ocean roared in his ears. This was how it should be, he recognized vaguely. Hawkes was meant for the shore, meant to inhale salty air and one day sink into the waters below. It had happened before, he thought, one or two lifetimes ago, and still the push and pull of the waves brought him in like a fish to bait.

Hawkes had never been to this place. He'd seen places like it, but never this exact one. At some point in his wandering the world had shifted a bit, had changed, without his knowledge. His mind adjusted quickly.

The island was lush and beautiful, even he had to admit, though the ground underfoot was rockier toward the edge, where Hawkes had found himself standing, staring out over the ocean below. How much of his life had he spent seaside? How much more would he? It was both a comfort in that it felt like home to him, and a bane, like a curse.

Inhaling deep through his nose, clean, cool air, Hawkes allowed himself a moment to relax on the cliffside. He would not stay long, more than likely. He never did. But this place was nice, and he figured it wouldn't hurt to take it in for a snip of time.

A new voice spoke and Hawkes turned his head toward the source, electric gaze taking in the stranger's form. A hulking man, unsuited for travel on such brittle cliffs, but walking among them as though he were used to it. Maybe Hawkes had intruded on someone's territory without noticing. It wouldn't be the first time, intentional or not, that it had occurred.

He hoped it didn't end in a fight. With the difference in their size, he doubted it would go well for him if it did come to blows.

Best to handle this without pissing off the guy too much, then.

A smirk crossed his maw and he shrugged a shoulder. "Can't remember," he said, tone casual. It wasn't a lie, either. Time was sluggish in these lands and places tended to come and go. Perhaps he'd been there seconds, or days, or weeks. Hawkes had no way to know. "Y' seem pretty accustomed to th' cliffs, though. Been here a while, I'm guessing?"

How could he explain what had happened without sounding like he was completely insane? He didn't think it was possible. Hawkes had simply blinked and entered a different place, but it wasn't the same as when he'd awoken in the first place. No, he'd been here... or, near here, anyway. In the vicinity. He was sure of that.

"Nah. I woke up a while ago," he settled on, glancing over toward the red-furred wolf beside him. "Just can't remember how I got here, exactly." It didn't really matter. It wasn't like he had anywhere else to go or anyone to answer to, so there was really no point in keeping track.

"These cliffs belong t' you?" he asked next, conversation idle, unbothered. If this man was going to chase him out, he would've done it already.
