a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

Kei knew as well as the next guy that it was important for them to venture beyond their borders. The Order wouldn't do much good if they sat around in Niawaki minding only themselves, but the Order had to be functional as well—something they hadn't quite reached beyond being a standard pack. Once everyone had earned a name, they would be better off, and then any of them could wander beyond the borders or deal with travelers. But for now, it was just her and Kyo.

Open ground? It wouldn't take long for her question to be answered. There were short set plateaus, grassy and barren, that gated the key, but beyond their walls, the land stretched on flat and empty aside from the dried yellow grass. Underfoot, the comforting plush and weave of jungle turned dry, leaving cracked, dried-out mud. Yeah, this is...lucky. Anyone passing will be spotted a mile away. Plus we have natural walls, although that could be bad if this is the only opening to Niawaki. Don't wanna get caught in a funnel. It would be worth following the plateaus to see where they break and note any other openings.

Traps...it wasn't a bad idea, but they would need to meet a few requirements. They don't want some kid bein' stupid and gettin' killed. They shouldn't back fire on their own, and more importantly, What if you aren't up there? Most enemies sneakin' around aren't going to announce themselves. They'll come at night if they're smart; wait for defenses to be resting or less alert. Unless they had an army no one would come marching up while they could be spotted long before they reached the grassy plateaus. 

If we can set them and leave them that's better. Non-lethal. I'm not killing someone because they're dumb and blind or poking their nose where it doesn't belong. Something to disable them— temporarily. Maybe a drop pit or something we can check. That would mean a lot of digging and the ground wasn't exactly soft, but it was cracked. That meant it had to be moist at some point. Maybe if it was dried mud, there wouldn't be many rocks, and digging a hole wouldn't be too time-consuming. The next issue is how they would hide their trap. Excess foliage would stick out like a sore thumb without any trees to make the trap inconspicuous.

We might be able to use the grass to obscure something. The wind will be an issue, but maybe the plateaus will keep it in place a bit. S'all we really got unless we find something more useful out here.
