 the Gods were with them. They had brought them here, whole and hale and some looked as though years had left them! it felt her prayers were answered, and all curses upon them had been lifted. other than her people, Toula had dug free from the earth the gift her father had first given her that offered her protection.
 with this new life came old desires, too. every time she looked to her husband her heart leapt into her throat! they had been good leaders, and good parents both this day—all rested now, settling after the chaos and commotion. she kissed her children atop their crowns and rest alongside her husband.
 except she could not sleep! just as she was about the wake him, she opened her eyes to meet the gilt of his own. she suppressed a laugh only for as long as they were within hearing distance of the rest,
 and then she could no longer withhold the girlish giggle that bubbled forth! joy, insurmountable joy—well, no, because it grew all the more as she felt him begin to administer his affections upon her! pushed into the sands, Toula gasped softly—and when he stood poised between her legs like that, when he looked at her that way… “Rashepses,” she whispered, her eyes darkened with desire! consume me!

 with each touch, she felt as though she ascended. it was always this way—she did not think it was possible for it to end. no, now she knew it would not. before he spoke his questions she marveled to him, with him, “lifetimes, my love!” and if this was not proof of Their divinity, Their promise, she did not know what else ever could be! and together, They had the power to protect their people, to bring them to this place!
 had she considered it? “I have thought much of it,” she wanted it, truth be told. “but I must think a little longer still,” for she had never seen it before! “have you seen it done, Raemka?” she wondered to him, curbing her desire long enough to speak with him on what she knew mattered in his heart!
 but she could not resist one more kiss where her lips lingered, her eyes sparkling all the while.

 her eyes twinkled at his words. how much they both had not seen—and then seen together! he had elevated her, she too would elevate him. playful, she said, “the women-Pharaohs in my family are known to be fierce,” but was that not the truth? her aunt had a reputation that many knew, even if they had not seen her for themselves. Makono… her reign had not lasted long, but she had made a name for herself and it was not at all delicate in its nature!
 but among them, Toula had been the one to rule two lands. to bring more peace to her people, to grant new freedoms. she leaned into her husband. “tell me, what would you do as Pharaoh, should I grant this?” what were his dreams? there seemed to be no question of if here—not then! a soft kiss to his lips, encouraging.

 He thought of Ta-senet. He thought of the serpent that flowed through Akashingo and held all in her thrall. He and Toula had spent days of delight bathing together within the waters and idling upon her banks. Playing with the children. Making love in the shade. The river lay heavily upon the flatlands, bright as spilling ichor. It fed their olives and sycamore figs, moistened the earth for lotus and mandrake and attracted all manner of prey to her shores. Hapi had let fly His wrath in the inundation. He would be appeased again.

 And so there was only one answer the king found appropriate:

 “A river, my love,” and he shuffled through Toula’s cheeks with an adoring nose.

 a river! she nods, leaning into his ministrations with a happy hum—“yes, a river—where we shall hold ceremonies, in the season of its flooding. hmm, I should also like for there to be foliage as we had in Muat-Riya—lush and dense and lovely! and oh, a place with many rooms—though ours shall be…” she mused on, smiling—laughing through the hours with her husband, hearing his wishes too.
 peace, peace at last—and joy she could scarcely keep within her. soon enough, her husband again became the direct recipient of it, until she slept—dreaming of their future. of a grander Akashingo!
