Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

It had been a long day. Indoctrinating new wolves into the Order was no easy task; not that any newcomer in a pack settled immediately, but not every pack had their kind of rules. It was tiring, especially when she was the only one who actually knew the Honiyah. It had been years since she recited passages so often. Shuji loved to run her through drills, and for some reason she humored him. The dragon gets no more than two steps in, her momentary relief squandered as Kyo called out for her. Kei sighed under her breath, pausing in her tracks to look over her shoulder. “Yeah?”

Kei stared back owlishly at the blunt request. It almost seemed like something had crawled up Kyo's ass and died. Maybe it was something more than innocent curiosity to learn about another culture or language.

Maybe he was jealous.

A smile slow spread, creeping sideways as a tooth poked at the edge of her lopsided lips, “Aw, so sudden? Sure, I don't see why not, but I do gotta know. Why now? Aren't ya tired?”

Usually, Kyo's overimposed crowding would irritate the dragon, but this time, it would only crack her grin wider; a sense of success layered her silent gloating before she sat herself to hold steady against Kyo's attempt to loom over her. “It's not as simple as common ya know. Er— I guess both are complicated. Not a lot of one-for-one translations, though. Even if I teach you words, the words can have different meanings based on pronunciation or context.” And his pronunciation needed a lot of work.

“Hmm, honestly you'd probably be better off listening more. Assuming you were tuning out my entire conversation with Taka, and I know I'm right 'cause your eyes glazed over, start listening.” This time it was her who leaned in invading his space, the tease on her lips flairing up again, before she swung back to settle on her haunches.

“We can practice speaking and get you some basic questions and answers, but the in-depth convos are gonna take ya a while. If that works for you, then you can say はい — it's probably the most common phrase. In this case, you'd be sayin' you understand or being affirmative. はい, はい is similar, but depending on tone, it could turn dismissive or be a simple greeting. Gonna give ya a hint now, Japanese is a lot more polite typically and built on respect, so watch the tone.” And that was sayin' something coming from her.
