Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

With maturity came a certain itch that staying in one place could not quite satisfy. Filavandrel was a fresh yearling, tall and lean and hungry for more than what Tsukiishi could ever offer him. He so loved his home and his growing family that inhabited the snowy mountains, but there was more beyond their borders. A whole world lay beyond, and as time ticked by the young Prince felt his eagerness to explore it grow.

Soon, he knew there would need to be a discussion with his parents about his fierce desire. For the time being, however, he was content to test his own boundaries and roam a little further each time he ventured out.

Filavandrel was no longer a child, and his mother had a new litter to occupy herself with. Still, he fretted over what her reaction might be. He was a gentle creature; the last thing he wanted to do was upset the Empress by choosing to depart.

Clouds gathered as the day stretched on, and Filavandrel found himself trailing his way along the lower reaches of a mountain just North of his home. The vegetation there looked tired with Autumn's grip, like grass stripped of its verdant hue by frost. He paused here and there to sniff at points of interest, ears alert atop his crown.

Vanderfell was growing once more and without the drama that had come before it with troublesome members and neighbours. Things were quiet once more. Peaceful. And as far as he heard from their allies in the South, the same had happened to them.

Stepping away from his own peaks, Hieronymous wandered South. Hoping to find a Shiroshikan so he may know of their status as well as inform Ira should she be interested. Her father and step-mother recently joined, and the High King was comfortable to leave their borders for a day or two and check on the Emperor and Empress. Something he had been putting off for months now while caring for their own newest litter and previously, pregnant wife.

He recognized this mountain between the two packs. It had moved as everything else around them had, but it was the same Dragontooth Overlook he knew before.

Not wanting to risk his own health and safety by being bold and dumb and going over the mountains, he opted for the lower paths and avoiding the tall peaks today. Autumn had made its way once more and the leaves were turning their signature shade of orange, red and yellow. He could never get enough of this.

And it took a lot for him to not get distracted by romantic thoughts of poetry and song such sights inspired. Instead, he had found something, or someone else. “Hail!” He called out first, a smile beaming from his lips with a tail waving happily behind him as the High King approached happily. “You are the prince of last year's Shiroshika litter, are you not?” He recognized the patterns and colours of this one. He had to be one of the sons he saw when the Empress gave birth in their Pass before moving back to Tsukiishi.

Filavandrel lifted his gaze at the sound of approaching paws, and blinked at the sight of an oddly familiar face. He maintained a neutral posture as the older wolf approached, his feathered tail low and limp, though his lavender eyes glimmered with curiosity. Familiarity softened him as Hieronymous closed the distance between them, and warmth brightened his youthful features. “I am,” he confirmed with a respectful dip of his narrow muzzle, “I am Filavandrel.”

He lifted his head, realising then that stood significantly taller than the mottled leader, and recalled how much smaller he'd felt in the presence of Vanderfell's leaders when he and his father had visited last Winter. So much had happened since then.

“It is good to see you again, High King.”

The High King couldn't help but let his eyes wander. The boy looked oh so similar to his father. Tall and lean with a certain air of youthful elegance to him. To see him as such a young whelp just last year, now a young man. He saw his own children reflected in this. Children born out of turmoil. Who survived such a stressful youth. Did they even know of it all?

“Filavandrel, that's right. What a surprise to see you here.” A pleasant one judging by the King's smile. “The pleasure is all mine. Are your parents and siblings doing well?” Not only was he seeking the plain answer to that, but also fishing to hear if Kuhn and his gang were still trouble after the land shuffling. A two sided question and waited patiently for an answer.
