the night sky stretched above her like an inky canvas, though some stars dotted it like paint splatters. it reminded her of her past, of days spent painting in the yard with the sun warming her skin. the sharp bite of the citrus trees filled the air along with the boisterous laughter of her younger sister. paloma was five, if cisne could remember.
yet when she slowly blinked open evergreen hued eyes, nothing was as she expected. cisne was no longer on the coastal park with her sister but in a new world. unusual trees sprouted from the earth with thick trunks and branches that reached up like fingers to the heavens. everything looked foreign, alive. but the sea was gone, as was her beloved sister. was she truly alone here?
with that thought in mind, the girl slowly raised herself to a sit though her body craved warmth. “hello?” cisne called, her voice a soft coo in the night air. she wasn’t sure who she was calling to, but she wished to at least announce herself should someone be around.
