Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write, though the game also rewards high activity
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • Writing is collaborative, and so is our supportive community
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

It was hard to tell if it was coming on morning, or going on night at first. Cocaine pressed his paws against the ground, rising to a standing position while he looked around slowly, and then up... finally down again, sniffing at the grass. He took a moment to gain composure, even then he walked forward with an awkward stumble at first. Again he looked around, blinking a few times. "Huh?" he asked, though not to anyone, evidently. Moving slowly, he sniffed at the trees, his satchel dragging along behind him a short way, until he remembered it.

"Ngh." he grunted, the obvious questions came to him... soon enough he came to the natural conclusions. "I'm not home? Where..." his words drifted off, "Hmm." Cocaine said with a rumble, starting in a direction, picking up on some amount of noise of which he couldn't place. Nature, certainly... creatures perhaps. Fixing in on his direction, his pace increased some, moving blindly for  the moment, ears focused on finding anyone, right now.

Ketamine had gotten used to venturing alone throughout time, her soul just needed something during the darkest hours of the days. Another wolf nearby, a squirrel or bird in a tree above, just knowing she wasn't completely alone was enough and she'd be able to drift off soundly for another night. Here though she had family to lay with at night and that was so much more then tender wayward souls on endless searching journeys. She never ventured too far from one of them, she preferred to be with them all but that wasn't always possible, she'd settle for what she could get and grump about it later. Since she'd found Gamma there'd been a spring In her step she hadn't ever had, it was weird this elated feeling that she wasn't used too and sometimes it got to her. Today was one of those days.

She had a bound today in her step that was literal and she pounced loudly through the flowers. Her brow was furrowed as the tri-colored Corsair lept upwards, a good few feet, before twisting and landing with a heavy thump. The female wasn't heavy per se, but she definitely made noise, she was no stealthy wolf, so when she landed it was a thump that sent the flowers around her feet rippling. With a loud yip she began to run aimlessly, in strange circles and crosses that made no sense. Ketamine went faster and faster, she suddenly slammed on her brakes and slid like tires on a went road, sliding in the flowers without more then a woosh and she stopped without any indication and began to tumble and roll head over paws.

“OOF” she exclaimed lightly as she landed on her back, staring at the sky for no more then a few seconds she began to snap with noisy clicks at the colorful fingers around her head. She started to push herself along her spine through the plush grasses and flowers, she was destroying everything around her without any though and was more focused on her fun then anything else. She giggled as she lept up quickly to pawtips and began to hop like a fox, straight up and down, she laughed as she tripped over her own feet and landed on her stomach. She was no queen of grace.

The girl heard a small commotion hearby and stopped, a mouthful of flowers shed grasped and lifted her head to the wind, an onyx nose directed at the sky, jowls filled with the tiny paintbrushes she'd murdered. She stood completely still, large audits trying to zero in on the origin of the sounds, they twitched and swiveled as she aimed and her brain shot her head like an arrow in the direction. She started towards the obvious presence of another and trotted lightly, when she wanted she could be near soundless, that was a plus to her large lithe form. Cocking her head she laid eyes upon another canine, male with hard dark browns and light withe flecked around his body.

Dipping her head she pulled herself up to her full height, her tail high about her backside, not in dominance but caution, she hadn't met a baddie here yet but she wasn't about to be caught off guard. She let out a loud bark in his direction, slowing her pace to a few feet from him oncoming form. Dark ocher eyes stared at the canine of strange scent as her form was illuminated in the sun, warm reaches from the sky sent bright colors along her body, oranges blacks and white were the brightest in the field surrounding her. Her neck hair was naturally bristled and stood on edge as she jerked her head at the man.“Oi!” She greeted with a shout to him, her punkish vibes practically flying out from her aura in an attempt to grab at his attention.

The border collie's ears flicked as he heard the noises nearing, and he began to be able to place them. The pouncing of a fox, stomping on... something. He couldn't place exactly what, but it didn't sound threatening, and so he continued in the direction, intent on encountering the source. The closer he came, the more he was convinced it was a fox jumping on flowers... as absurd as that sounded, but it certainly didn't sound like frolicking, it sounded more aggressive, and the only alternative perhaps was-

A loud bark cut his thoughts off, and his head snapped directly to face the noise's direction, and his gait increased until the distance was closing fast... he spotted her, slowing and meeting eyes with her, which gave her a look over... his head tilted. This wolf wanted his attention... the fox was a wolf? Pieces of the puzzle put themselves together slowly...

"Oi." he responded, unsure how to greet her. Repeating her seemed a fine start. She'd get a good look at his oddly-scratched snout before he talked. "I have a lot of questions... and I don't want any trouble." he stated, looking the wolf in the eyes. "Let's start with where...?"  he looked around, then back at her.

The male closed in quickly and she stood her ground, just in case he decided to barrel into her, planting her nails deep into the soil below. She felt the near silent crunch between her paw pads and watched the brown approach. When he was only a few feet away she noticed his fur, it was long and silky looking, so soft and shiny. His eyes glazed over her form in almost confusion, and in her lifetime that was something she had grown used too, her mutty patterns were often the beginning of many gossip topics in closed snobby circles. He stared at her and returned her Oi of a greeting, her jowls broke into a smile as the flag began to wave above the ship of her body.

He explained her had a [b]lot[lb] of questions and didn't want any trouble. She was a bit taken aback, did she look like trouble? Heavens knew she often got into trouble but it was never on purpose nor due to trouble making. Even if the woman was a bit of a jokester. The man seemed a bit confused and possibly a tad bit concerned with himself and his surroundings.“Nah... No trouble... I ain't gon do dat... Dat ain't me ..” she told him in hopes of making him feel a tad bit more comfortable.

“As fer where... I think dis is called Sundance Grove... S'nice leetle spot ah found... Lossa flowers ta run in ..” she wuffed at the smaller male with a smile, she tossed her head a bit with the excitement of the thought of her previous actions.“Mah name's Ketamine... Who yuh be?” The large woman inquired, dipping her head down a bit to get on his level and look at him a bit more closely.

The collie was eased by her assurances, eager to believe her... and with little reason not to either. He looked Ketamine over as she spoke, her words at first not quite registering. He picked up on her way of speech soon after, his ears flicking, and he let out a heavy breath. Cocaine didn't seem any more comfortable, but he did understand well enough, and as far as he could hope for he got his answer.

The male turned from looking around, to looking at Ketamine herself. "Yes..." he nodded, wherever he was... it was far away, and if she was indicative of the locals, little mind was paid to how to get back... wherever here and back were. His eyes met with hers, finally. "Ketamine...?" he wasn't sure if he'd heard the word before, or just one like it.

Even with his thoughts, he paused quite a while, looking at her, up at her naturally. His mouth opened, words lagging behind. "... The name is Cocaine." he answered, and then let out a "hrm" "Pretty as they are, I'd like to know..." he paused. What did he want to know? He sighed, [b]"Let's start with 'What I ought to be doing?'. " Cocaine shrugged.

Sorry if this wasn't the greatest!

“Cocayne...?” She asked him before furrowing her brows a tiny bit, a concerned look crossed her face before she looked around the pair with obvious paranoia and a twinge of panic could be felt arising from her soul.“... Da men ussa say dat... Ussa feed eet ta nah sista...” She sniffed the canine before her, he still smelled like man and she felt that panic grow a little more, did he bring one of those two legged monsters with him?

“Yuh smell lyke dem... Ya... Ya see one..?” She whimpered, her large ears flattening in fear as she tried to focus on his question of what he was supposed to be doing.“Oh i'unno mayn... Maybe try ta find a place to sleep? Dere lossa places by 'ere... I lyke da wahta.... Helps meh sleep...” she told him, trying to push down her panic so as not to seem like such a weak scared little puppy. Truth was though she was just that, a scaredy pup.

It was hard for her to focus now, her eyes were wild as she tried to keep her head together, she decided she needed to relax so she took a second to snort and shake herself out. The tall woman proceeded to start with her head and violently shook out the rest in an organized fashion, the force of her shake cause her to loose balance ever so slightly and she felt her paws slide just a tad. Chuckling she cocked her head with a smile, biting down the fear she'd been found.“Ya wanna wandur?” She offered, hoping he'd take her offer and they'd get away from where she fear the monsters would be searching soon.

"The men?" A simple question that acted as multiple, though it quickly seemed he would be the one answering things first, his gaze held steady. First his name, then his scent... quickly his mere presence became troubling to her, his mouth opened again, though he was listening... and watching. His eyes looked into hers, doing his best to understand.

Soon enough, understand he did, she was scared... try as she might to hide it, something she picked up on terrified her, though he wouldn't go so far to say that she was terrified right now, she did well enough to make her feelings a mystery. "I lived with them." he rolled his eyes, "Most us dogs life with, or among them." he nodded decisively, counting strays and the like that roamed 'free'.

"Let us walk." he answered her question, though he felt it needless, there was no particular reason to be in this spot, and he might accomplish 'finding a place to sleep' as well. He started toward the direction she came, "We are far from them." Cocaine assured, at least far from his humans... he could not speak for hers, but was speaking words of comfort right now regardless. "Your sister. They fed her cocaine?" he asked, though it was still talk of men, it would be talking with purpose rather than of fear...
