Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

Familiar forests were entered.. Breath taken by the evergreens and frozen water that always seemed to glisten. The sound of the stream so gentle, as the waterfall embraced lightly to the ground. She was about to approach further, but her eyes caught the sight of an falcon, settling gently to the coast. Peacefully it was nipping away at an assumed caught fish, strange she thought, it chose to eat there in the open — but it was also and opening for herself.

Carefully did she prowl, nearby a bush to remind downwind and behind the scenes. They were tricky, able to see miles away and hear if she was not careful enough. Needed the upmost moment to do so, and for the meanwhile stood plenty afar, silently debating when to prowl further and when should she strike..

A familiar air greeted Alexei in his return to the Veils. The glacial weather was staring to become normal to him, though the elk's pelt was still attached to him at the hip — or rather, the shoulders. A dark oak mixture standing out against the blackened charcoal edges of his own coat, highlighted by streaks of maroon. His natural colors meant to stick out in this kind of environment. So not only did the hide keep him warm but also in tone with the natural surroundings. Chesnut was an easier fit than carmine and shadow.

The fisherman was light on his paws, keeping low to the ground as he examined around him. Today, he'd meant to go fishing, but before, wanting to see if he could document another find of different creatures or creatures that morphed to a lighter color due to the surroundings. He'd seen a few; foxes being a primary culprit of changing color. And maybe they, too, clocked him for the same thing, melding with another fur coat atop his own. Though in his search, he caught the scent of lilacs tinted with sweetness, the same smell that came with his newfound friend, Aries.

Alexei kept his hunched shape, but leaned up enough to glance around, before spotting the whitened figure also stationed in a squat. Violet eyes found themselves following her line of sight and saw a falcon eating the remains of a well-caught dinner. He was reminded of their last meeting, mentioning bird hunting together. He hoped she wouldn't mind his intruding, but he too, crawled in, a little from the west, peeking his head around a rock to show that he was there. Then his focus remained on the falcon, waiting for his hunting buddy to make the first move.

Watching and observing in the backdrop, she was stepping closer to a comfortable level.. Each paw slowly making forth for the smallest sounds onto the ground as possible ; then she stopped. Something in the distance breaking before a rock and she looked at him with a surprised look that soon faltered to a warmth. It was a surprise to see him, and the vagueness of a caribou heard she could see scruffed lightly on him, that she almost laughed ; but was quick to stop herself as she realized her moment.

Aries moved her head, wolf movements of an indication that Alexai should move forward as she did too. He seemed to not want to disturb the hunt, and maybe would even perhaps like to help? There was talk of fowler business ; and a prey of a falcon would be a lunch between the two, where the feathers could be per' use as well. She started her prowl once more, furthering herself close enough and a waiting for Alexai — just before they would pounce toward it.

It was still distracted.

The falcon dug into its prey with little care to the outside world, it seemed that all it did care about was filling its stomach with the discarded remains of an animal once vivid and breathing. Alexei couldn't help but watch in some sort of curiosity. He'd never seen a bird of that size this close. Truthfully, he never wanted to. He knew what dangers lied with hawks and larger birds alike — rumors of them stealing children when they were far too young to fight. Or take the eyes out of wolves in a fight. Even so, he is older now and still sees them in a nervous light. But with Aries not far off, he seemed a little more at ease with the odds.

With the tick of Aries' head forward, the man crawled closer, keeping quiet in his moments, steadying his breath. Now honed in on the predator — now turned prey. Alexei's ears flattened to his head and his nose twitched slightly, maw wrinkling with a flash of white teeth. He was ready to strike. Before it could sense them or become bored with the meal, he bounded forward, taking the first move as he grasped it's tail feathers in his mouth, pulling downward right as the beak of the bird swung around...

It was a short hunt, but between two wolves who were well hidden by the naivety of the bird, they slowly prowled closer. Enough where then the counterpart of this endeavor lunged forward to grab at it's back, feathers flying and the squaking of realizing as she sees it fluttering it's wings, both attempting to attack and to break free. However Alexei was not alone, and Aries leaped forward to the bird of prey, he fangs clacking as she latched onto it's neck. Unfortunate though, for her teeth were just a miniscule away from grabbing onto, but she got nothing but air. The bird pulled away, losing it's tail, but not it's life..

And it flew away.

Aries would sigh, giving a pity smile, "my luck with hunting has been horrid." Which was a true shame to the snow hare, she very much enjoyed hunting, more then any medical work or being a messenger ; but ever since she came to canis.. Her luck on a hunt has been always a fail.

The falcon was not going to give them an easy win. It fought with the fear of God and pulled out of both their grasps with a few rapid flaps of its wings. Alexei's teeth clicked together, only having a few feathers in his mouth as remnants from their failed attempt. His head still arched into the air, purple eyes following the falcon's escape route. It squawked loudly and yelled at them from above as it flew away.

At Aries' smile, his gaze turned to her, reciprocating the same look, as if to say 'oh well.' It wasn't a big deal. It seemed both of them had a lot to learn about bird hunting.

"That's alright. I'm pretty bad with hunting outside of the water. You don't have to worry." The fisherman rushed to reassure her. He really didn't mind. If anything, it would give them more time to talk, which he wished for anyway. It was always nice to see a friend. "How's your afternoon going...? You know, besides this." A soft chuckle left his maw, greeting her with a slight bump of their shoulders together.
