Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

Life on the move had been everything she'd ever hoped for. Ciri had roamed far and wide, trailing her way across the vast mountains. She'd crossed the paths of many - rogue and pack-wolf alike - and was fortunate to have managed to avoid any hostility. She'd scaled great heights and fell in love with the world around her everywhere she went, so was excited to find herself crossing into a whole new region that seemed to stretch with open land for as far as the eye could see.

Her yellow gaze glittered as she paused to pluck the last of Summertime's berries from a cluster of thorny bushes, careful with her fine muzzle to reach for those that wouldn't result in a pricked lip. She savoured the sweetness of them on her tongue, thankful for the little boost of energy that would surely serve her well on the next leg of her journey.

Ciri lifted her muzzle as a shadow swept over her, and vibrant yellow gaze found the soaring shape of a bird in the sky. It called out and she recognised the markings on its throat and outstretched wings. It was a kestrel, likely on the hunt for a mouse among the rugged landscape, and she observed it for a short while longer before turning away and moving on.

Astrid had hoped that he might not be touched by his culture in any more ways but it seemed that he had been too hopeful. It was clear that it was the work of those blasted Gods that meant he was here, tumbling through an array of prickly bushes with the sounds of "Ouch!" and "Fuck!" being pulled from his throat as he tumbled, skin pinched by thorns and branches.

He came to a stop as he tumbled, a mess of lengthy legs and cream fur mottled with crimson from small cuts of thorns. He glanced to the sky and sighed as he felt the dull pain of his skin and his flesh. "You just had to, didn't you," Astrid puffed an incredulous laugh as he pulled himself to his paws, wincing as he glanced either side and saw his creamy fur sporting flecks of blood. He was sure he had some on his face, too.

The once-Viking glanced around, the land new and obviously not where he had been walking prior.

She carried along an old deer path on nimble paws, stepping quietly and carefully between the thorn bushes until a disturbance behind her had her pause. Ciri tucked her tail and swung around, yellow eyes wide as she studied her surroundings, ears swivelling atop her raven crown to catch the obscene word spat from the maw of a troubled stranger. As the pale-furred wolf withdrew himself from among the jagged branches, the swallow felt relief sweep over her to see that it was not a cougar who'd been tangled up nearby.

Ciri blinked, taking a single step toward the other wanderer before she stopped, hesitating. He was not a big cat, thankfully, but the frustrated canine could just as easily project his frustration on her. She emitted a chuff to him from a distance as he gathered himself, scraped and visibly bleeding, and asked: “hey, you need some help?”

Someone had been in the audiance.

They made him aware of their presence, stepping forward on earthen legs as their vibrant yellow gaze watched him cautiously. "Ah, i'm alright, friend. The weirdest thing happened," he dusted himself off as he shook his fur out, little flecks of blood clumping from the way the branches and thorns ripped into him.

"I was walking and then I was... here, funny, isn't it? A whole new world," he mused merrily, as if it wasn't bothering him that he had been plucked from his world and dropped here without a care. He had no doubt that it was the Gods doing and they were clearly punishing him. Ever different from his culture and upbringing, it didn't change the fact that he thought of the Gods.

That was probably why they had done it; a reminder that even if he shirked his culture, it would always come back to bite him in the ass.

There was little she could do but watch the stranger shake out his furs and pull himself together, though she felt herself slacken somewhat to know that he was not about to project his frustration on her. Ciri swept her vibrant yellow gaze curiously over the scraped and bloodied little marks on his snout and face, but did not draw much more attention to them. Instead she sought her newest acquaintance's eyes, briefly, and let her smile bloom to communicate that she was nothing but friendly.

“Yeah,” she gave a thoughtful lash of her blackened tail, “it's a strange feeling. Seems common around here. My whole family came from another world.” The blackbird rolled a skinny shoulder; her memory of the life she'd come from was vague, lessening even more as time ticked on, but she did not yearn for forgotten memories. Ciri looked only toward the future, eager to experience whatever her newfound independence had in store for her. “My name is Ciri,” she added brightly, “what's yours?”
