Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

Eyes opened, the skeleton wolf let out a gasp. Eyes open wide, before him was the plains, an interesting piece of environment he was not use to seeing. Dormant volcanoes, oceans, and forests were more up his alley. He reached a paw to rub upon his long snout, yet all he found was air. Odd, he hadn't recalled changing his form. Looking down he noticed how odd his body looked. Some sort of canine, hm. He tried to jump in the air, expecting to flip and change form but all he did was fall onto his stomach with a curse. "God fucking damn it."

He looked around, none of his items were here. Was there a lotus leaf he could use? Something, anything! He did not know why his form had changed or the reason his powers weren't working. Maybe a prank from the deity he worked under for. Yeah the fucker finally lost their marbles. "Heh, alright you got me." He said, expecting to see a familiar face. But nothing changed. He would soon realize he was on his own in a strange new world...

"GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY WAY"

Wildlife scattered as a wolf teared through the small thin woods, tearing and biting at any adorable woodland animal that got in his way. Clearly there weren't too many predators because these dumb-asses wouldn't move out of his way fast enough. Finally he found what he was after, a body of water. Looking at his reflection, he discovered what he had fear, he was indeed a canine. A wolf from the looks of it, what clunky and awkward creatures. "Shit-shit, fuck!" He screamed, taking out his frustration on the wonderful flora around him. This was bad, this was really fucking bad. He was as good as piss if he didn't figure out a plan soon. He had enough sense to know how cruel life was, and again in life once more...he was all alone.

Letting out another loud snarl, he would continue to rip up flowers until he heard the sounds of another. "Oi, who's fucking there? Stop standing there like a pussy and get your ass over here bitch!" He would snap, eyes a-blazing. Needless to say he was not in the best of moods right now. But finally, maybe someone smart or useful was here instead of all these fucked up woodland critters. He was known for speaking in English when the world was pissing him off.

Izumi was indeed standing there from behind a nearby tree, watching this man, but not like a pussy -- like a person who had more sense than to approach someone going full-blown mental in the middle of a flower field by himself. All she had wanted was to enjoy a brisk walk to clear her mind for a bit, but instead, she was now getting pulled into the middle of someone else's meltdown. A petty part of her did want to make her presence known just so he could watch her turn tail and walk away, for all the insults that were now being hurled at her for no reason. Yet the crane would be lying if she wasn't curious as to what was going on, so instead of walking away, she would give him what he wanted and revealed herself.

She stopped at a safe distance away, the muscles in her legs ticking in spasms in case her fight or flight began to kick in -- why did she approach to begin with? Still, the crane would make an attempt to stand tall with a pointed tail above her hocks. Not letting her uncertainty show -- as allowing fear to surface often made things worse. Izumi learned that from experience. “It wouldn't kill you to ask a little nicer, wouldn't it?” the crane remarked, her voice laced in clear sarcasm.

So did the stranger come forth, another wolf. His fur settled slightly. She brought with her familiarity at an extent. She resembled that of a Miko to him, a supporter of the shrines he worked at. She did not seem amuse but he wasn't her goddamn therapist so that was her problem. Also she was like fucking hot so that was pretty dope too, easy on the eyes and something nice to look at. A weakness to women and his own culture, he responded in the nicest way he could; with a roll of his eyes.

"Oi fucks sake, you'd be a bitch too if you just suddenly woke up here. Tell me what land or realm we're in, Sweetcakes!"

He said and demanded before focusing his attention more on the actual being he was talking too and not just her pretty body. He was an observant and crafty fox-er, wolf. He could see how tense she was, which only boosted his ego because yeah, he was a fucking badass. She should be scared of him, but also think he's dreamy and kind of hot. "Heeey Honey, why you all shaky? You're so tense, keh." A smug smile graced his lips and he stalked just a little closer, weaving past the destroyed landscape so he didn't have to shout so much (and maybe he was hoping to see her squirm), eyes blazing with mischief as he stuck his tongue out. He truly looked like something otherworldly. He was about to tease and jab, but the closer proximity made him notice something. It seemed his powers had not fully gone away. He could sense it, the energy of the devout. Karma. He tilted his head, look softening slightly. A form of filial piety reawakening ever-so-slightly.

"別の言語を話しますか? 아마도 이것은?" He took a stab at a few languages, not bothering with any vulpes language. He would rather have ignorance when it came to with other foxes anyways.

“My name is Izumi-” the crane corrected, the little pet name leaving a bit of a sour taste in her mouth -- similarly to when @Tiberius used to call her bird or something similar. “--and you are in the plains, of course.” she wasn't aware of what he had meant by realm, unless.....ah. It hit her, he had just woken up here. It would explain his words, and maybe even his fustration. Even though that didn't give him much of a right to take it out on her, she could at least understand him a bit better. Even feel for him...as much as she wanted to bite him right now.

Her eye twitched in annoyance at his next remark, with the monochrome brute giving her yet another pet name and claiming she was even shakey. If there was anything she disliked more it was people seeing through a mask meant to hide what she actually felt, and while he wasn't granted any gestures of annoyance she assumed he was trying to gain from him, she instead stayed silent and stared, and icy gaze of violet daggers with vulgar thoughts not suitable for sensitive ears behind them....temporarily.

She hadn't even noticed how he switched to speaking from english to japanese just then -- nor the softening of his form -- only a twitch of her ear when an unfamiliar tounge at the end of his sentence was worded and suddenly she was slithering closer to the man. More like, all up in his face and looking him in the eye. “誰が緊張していますか?” the crane challenged, snorting air from her nose “あなたは他の人生でペニスとして死にましたか、それともお尻に棒が刺さって目覚めたばかりですか?”

A part of her wanted to up and leave from there, after he'd just made her angry in a way she wasn't used to expressing like that and it embarrassed her, but still stood there -- as if trying to gauge what he'd do next.

He did not expect her to challenge him. Due to his recognition of her culture causing his guard to lower he flinched a little, the Japanese she spoke only caused him to be more flustered from the words. He open his mouth to retort, combat at the girl. She thought she was hot shit?! But then she spoke and he was stunned, flabbergasted with his mouth opened agape. Where he was from he was use to more subtle women. He knew her kind right away, so to see such a deviation from what he expected...it was like the roles got swapped. He was too insecure with his current status and position in this world to try and tell her otherwise.

And honestly? This was kinda fucking hot.

He could respect and dig it, girls that took charge were cute he was finding out. His eyes stared intently at her own before they looked away, avoiding further confrontation with his own snort. Thomas thought about it for but a moment. Deciding right now it was much more interesting to let her step on him, masochism could be fun too.

He shrugged his shoulders and sighed in a way to admit defeat. "Cool it girly-" He quickly changed his tone. "I mean, Izumi-sama, if I may? Getting off on the wrong foot here, I can see that now, I give. I'm a little...upset right now so I apologize I guess." He was trying to figure out her honorifics. He would then sit on his haunches and bow his head at a polite angle before switching tongue again.

"もっと具体的に言っていただければ、ボタンを押すのをやめます。ここは日出づる国ではありません。私はここにいるべきではありませんし、音と見た目からすると、あなたもいるべきではありません" He pointed out. There must be more to this situation, there had to be and she had seniority over in this odd world. He hated the vulnerability from the situation he was currently in, but he would swallow his pride and take the advice he could from her. Plus, there was no one else around, he could be a bit nicer...wouldn't ruin his reputation too much.

She awaited his reaction.

Still internally shocked by her own reaction, yet it was her fustration with this man's pure audacity allowing water to leak out of the cracks. On a normal day she would've just said something rude and walked away as she usually had -- so what was it that was making her size up a litteral stranger over a few annoying words? A reaction like this was unbecoming of the edequitte she'd been taught growing up....

Yet still, she waited.

Narrow-eyed and pouted to prepare for his next onslaught of words -- to dare him to continue, so she could have something to say herself. Though instead of the barrage of smart alecky words she expected to be thrown her way, something unexpected happened. He...broke eye contact with her? Within the canine world, direct eye contact was a challenge in itself. So to see the man breaking their "staring contest" caused a small twinge of satisfaction to be fed to her more feral side.

Above all, though, she was really confused and unsure as to what to say next, because she hadn't expected this at all.

Thankfully the white-stripe began breaking the silence for her. The sound of her being called girly caused her eyes to go icy within a glare, yet that gaze quickly turned into one of suprise when he referred to her as -sama. -Izumi is fine, she blurted out almost immediately, feeling her ears flatten and her cheeks glow red. First Osamu, and now him -- the name carried so much weight that she couldn't help but feel flushed by it. She hadn't even had land to claim as of yet, so why was everyone insistent on calling her that!?

She breathed out, feeling her nerves start to calm as the tension from before began to die down “--and I understand. We all have bad days, I get it, but don't just go around taking it out on others. It'll make things harder for both you and them.” and in already having an idea of why he was angry, they could start somewhere.

To his assumptions, she'd shook her head. Long ago she would've agreed with him, that the crane didn't belong her and that she needed to find her way back home -- but that wasn't the way. “それはあなたが間違っている場所です、これは私があるはずの場所です。 それは私の前世の死後の私の最終目的地です。” she explained while softly shaking her head. “多くは、ここに連れて来られた理由を知らないが、理由のために現れた。 私たちはそれを残すことはできません。”

Ultimately he was quiet for most of the miko's responses, she seemed surprised that he gave up so easily (to be honest he was slightly in agreement with her). The only time he broke the silence was her flustered reaction to the honorifics he assigned. It caused a smug ass smile to spread across his lips as he snickered with a mischievous glance. For a wolf with so much poise it seemed she was new to the destiny that he could increasingly sense from her. How amusing. It was like they were playing a messed up fucking game of doll and house.

Well okay, he broke the silence more. As he nagged her he snorted. "If they have a problem they can grow some balls like you and say it to my face. I can be fucking petty to them if I want." He huffed but it was more as if he was a sulking child that just got chastised by their mother, removing the bite from the words. Her next words changed the mood into something somber and for Thomas, almost sinister.

He tilted his head with a tight frown as he heard about the other's demise. Death was something he was far too use to due to his shenanigans back in his more inhumane days. It was the fact that death had happened and now they were in this world that was troubling. This looked or felt like none of the realms or planes he has prodded around before or heard of. A powerful force was orchestrating this and he could not think of any type of god or beast that could do this in such a way. Thomas' zen was strong, he should be able to wiggle out of any petty spells or curses.

He realized he had been quiet for a long moment. Blinking, he continued to focus on the lost soul's last words. Grim. He started to pace back and forth. "Fucking great..." How was he going to get back to his master? The only one that understood him and gave him purpose?! He was starting to spiral, his tough facade cracking as he tried not to panic.

This man.....this man was acting like a child -- and it was really hard to continue taking him seriously when it felt like there was a three year age difference between the two of them. Before there existed anger at his tauntings, but now the only thing the cranebird could feel was the social drainage one felt when arguing with a pup. She sighed, the crease which formed upon her brow in annoyance smoothing over as she calmed.

Seriously, what was his deal? More importantly, who was this, anyway?

There was little to no response to her own words, other than a tight frown, before mumbling more obscenities and pacing back and forth. What she had explained must've been a lot to process at once, and Izumi did not judge the reaction. Instead she would allow it, for there were many ways to cope with the reality of being born again. “There isn't a way back, i'm afraid.” She answered gently, yet bluntly. One could give into the temptation to give the other hope to lighten the mood, but that would only be temporary. The crane did not believe there was a way back from all of this -- their first life had escaped them all in place of this new one.

“I assume you aren't even aware how you got here, don't you...,what is your name, boy?”

He was trying not to panic. Trying really hard. He was stuck in this stupid mongrel form, he was away from home, he was failing his promise to his master. He could feel his pulse quickening as reality sunk in and threaten to crush him with its invisible weight. Space was closing around him as he continued to pace. He felt like he couldn't breathe. He fucked up again didn't he. Oh he fucked up-her voice rung out. Due to the brightness of her spirit he could not ignore it even if he closed his eyes. It sweltered and expanded as she spoke.

He stopped and abruptly turned to look at her, a little drop of blood seeping from his closed maw due to the pressure of his tongue against his fangs as he panicked. Her truth, he had nothing to counter it as of this moment. He would just have to accept it as fact until he could prove otherwise. And he fucking hated it. He really did. Her question allowed him to focus on something else and he was thankful for it.

He studied her carefully, thinking she was bold for such a claim. But then again she probably thought he was just a wolf like the rest of them and not a monstrous spirit that served gods. He said the first name that came to mind. "Call me Thomas." He stated and inwardly he winced. He recalled a man in a group that had came to the islands once by ship to threaten the gods years ago. Names from lands far away that would soon grow popular in his homeland. Often he was on his mind and so he just spat out his name but it truly did not fit. Well too late now, he would find a way to shine in the name.

But he felt his eye twitch as the other called him a boy. "Boy huh, bah!" He spat before strutting up to her with his legs extended as possible, his head risen and in a way he seemed quite vulpes due to his already long legs and muzzle. He looked at her up and down with a look that could be describe as suggestive or sultry, like he could eat her. He liked this girl, she had spirit and confidence to navigate in the unknown when he did not. He could be distracted in her strength and it was a gulty pleasure for the man who wanted to be seen as a tough guy. In another life and time he would have appeared before her on a rainy day. "I am a man first and foremost." He said in a lower voice that was almost husky.

But oddly he then took a swift step back and severed intimacy to eye her. "What about you? Woman, yes? Yet...this may be your new destiny after demise but what does that mean for destiny?" He narrowed his eyes.

"There is something more to you, I can tell from how you talk, how you look, smell...shine. You shine ever brightly...the shine of those who have committed to a noble purpose. Admirable, but dangerous, for the stakes are high and you will have to give and give only more to ensure it until nothing is left..." His voice was still low but it grew softer as he asked, a look that could almost be described as envy could be noticed as he seemed to stare into her, almost like he was foretelling of the future. In all honesty it was just experience and a good memory at play.
