Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

On her way throughout the tundra, Aries had found the trackings of a caribou herd. Tricky beings, they were not something one or two wolves could easily get, but a small group, was something different altogether. It was always pleasant to know where the herds would stay about, and where they would move ; for surely a calling of a pack hunt could be possibly deemed, and toyed with the idea of venturing it toward the leaders itself. Yet for the meanwhile, she would divulge into the hunt, prowling through the snow and dry-grass as she followed the trail. Nose to the grindstone, it was getting warmer and warmer with each step.

It felt good to hunt. Like a huge weight of unease and ball of anxiety just lifted with the exercise. She had always been like this though. Tallulah felt content running around, and doing physical tasks. So when she spotted the caribou droppings, she followed the hoofprints and eventually came across the herd from afar. But she wasn't alone.

She eyed the other woman curiously before approaching. True, the herd was still a bit far... But she felt confident tackling an old caribou with help. The prey wasn't around, but the intent was clear to both wolves. They could come up with a plan. They could talk here. "Want some help?" she asked clearly, wagging her tail at the other despite her accent creeping in.

This one was from... one of the packs in the Tundra, right? The pale woman smelt like an arctic wind.

She could see the tracks in the snow, and when Aries approached to investigate, the smell of their fresh trail was within her nose. She raised her head, a yellow eye squinting out to whether she could see them nearby, but not yet. An ear flickered in thought to hear them but for the meanwhile was silent.. Until someone approached, in the midst of her concentration they came to — a strange wolf, Aries would say, it caused her to tilt her head as they did not seem like someone who was from the tundra. Brown with unusual pattern, and something on her head..

"Ah, I didn't intend to hunt, but simply investigate.. But perhaps with two of us, we could attempt to take down a straggler?"

While the woman didn't intend to hunt, she was still offering to do it. Tallulah bobbed her head in agreement. "Aye, it'll be a trek back to Elysium wit' some meat but" Her mismatched eyes shifted to look behind, where she knew Fate's Respite was "maybe yer pack'll be more needful of the food?" And she didn't mind helping, on neutral ground. Her pack prided itself on neutral and welcoming behavior.

She was carefully and politely pointing out she knew the woman was from around here. Not a direct jab, since Tallulah didn't know what pack specifically. It'd be some time before she could name them by scent alone. "Name's Tallulah, of Elysium obviously" she smiled, amused "let's try to find some meat fer yer cache, aye?" With the two of them, it could be done. Hopefully. The woman went off to track again, letting the pale one keep watch.

Sniffing along the ground, she picked up disturbed snow and dirt mixed in. They had come from greener pastures if dirt was on their hooves. She followed after, making sure to trail a bit behind. Not for the pale woman but because she didn't want the herd to spot her against the snow.

"Oh Elsyium? I am from Duskguard," Aries said with a warm voice as she accidently came across an allied wolf. She was relatively safe and was a bit naïve to trust strangers often, but she wasn't a complete fool to know that everyone was safe. Especially with the turmoils that she gradually was getting to know ; an exhausting effort that the snow-ram was attempting to help the best she could. After all, the pack offered her a home, "any pack could use a caribou." she then said with a minor chuckle to her tone.

"I am Aries," she said, bowing her head lightly, and following her along. To the ground they went, prowling as they go and carefully keeping to the land itself. She was more adept to hiding with the snow while the other was a stark-contrast, and thus lead ahead. Deep scenting and inhaling, following the footsteps of the herd. Lightly she raised her head, flickering her tail as she looked back, "they're up ahead."

She smelled them, she sees them — they found them.

It felt mighty fine to hunt alongside an ally and not a stranger. While she had no problem with either situation, Tallulah smiled more around friendly faces. Aries remarked that any pack could use a caribou. She agreed. "Aye," she chuckled in response "that they can!" But Elysium was too far and the meat would spoil before she returned. She wanted to explore a bit, frankly.

Once the pair see the caribou, Tallulah also defers being seen by them. She hunkered down along a snowbank, using the cover as she turned to Aries. "Why don't ya pick one to single out?" She wasn't skirting duties but being logical "they'll see me comin' a mile away. I'll ambush it if ya send one to me." A plan was forming, and she was preparing herself for the outcome. Wiggling a bit to get comfortable with jumping out, she flexed her budding muscles.

She wouldn't let Aries down.

Aries nodded to her with a smile, as she slowly started to prowl through. Golden eyes gazing to what was the best choice and paused before going further. There was a quite in-between, but in the distance could she notice one had lesions on their legs. A minor injury of maybe an earlier attack of another — or they had simply fallen. An older caribou, there were sitting on the edge of the group as the rest looked like they were prepared to leave.

That would be the target.

She looked back to nod at Elysium wolf, and shrug her shoulders at the one she was aiming for. Then, Aries with a quick stride would hutl forth in a fury ; a causing of barking to get their attention and cause a fleeing. She could see the injured one was attempting to get up, and while the rest would start to stampede toward the north, she cut off the other from that same direction.

It had no choice but to turn around, and flee in the opposite direction.. Coincidentally, right where the other wolf was.

She gave a curt nod, understanding and locking mentally onto their chosen prey. Aries drifted off, and Tallulah hunkered down even more. Waiting for a chance to strike. The herd bellowed not long after, a warning to themselves and others; there was a predator here. Accompanied by barking and growling from the woman, the caribou fled.

Aries focused on their target, who had made the mistake of fleeing toward Tallulah. Its leg was hindered by the quick, panicked movements. She jumped out of hiding, wrapping her paws around its thick neck as it crashed clumsily by. Her jaws closed around the side of its jugular, gripping and holding. She crunched down as fast as possible. The air cut off.

It slowed, the trampling less chaotic. The caribou bellowed a few times, harsh. Panicked. Fearful. Blood dripped in a steady flow from the deep punctures. Tallulah still held on, waiting on Aries for backup. The prey didn't even fight anymore, half-hearteningly accepting it's demise.

As Aries had herded the stray, and weakened elk to the other canine, she emerged from the bush and jumped out to face the prey. Aries as well would plunge into the fight, nipping the sides of the feet of the elk. She was careful to avoid being directly behind as the other would kick and attempt to fight against the date presented — Tallulah had gripped it's air-pipe and slowly, slowly.. Crushing it, as she too then held a weakened leg into her mouth, feeling the life slipping.

Until finally it breathed no arm, and the metallic tang was upon her tongue, "Good job," she said, smiling and pushing herself upwards to the other, while silently uttering a prayer to the fallen. The cycle continues.

ooc; end?

She had the sense to be humbled. Tallulah never had a fat head where skill was involved. She accepted the hunt was a success due to teamwork. "Thank you," but she also felt it was rude to deny a compliment directed at her "let's git this back to Duskguard, aye?" She wasn't that hungry, and she'd just be bloated if she ate now.

Being bloated was not a good time. Especially trekking back to Fate's Respite. She would feel too content and perhaps be caught unawares, by the smell of blood and prey on her coat. Mistaking her for food by other predators. With Aries' help, she would begin to drag the prey carefully to Duskguard's border. All in all, a good hunt to be had.

sounds good to me!

Aries would smile and nod to prepare the upcoming travel on dragging the prey through the snowlands and to the vale. She knew by the time she arrived some packmates would surely help, but it'd still be a bit of a journey to return.. Although the snow-hare would make sure that the cowgirl would at least take a leg or otherwise, and insisted she had something on the way home for helping this hunt, just before she bid her a final farewell.
