Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write, though the game also rewards high activity
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • Writing is collaborative, and so is our supportive community
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

Before he made his decision of moving to those southern woods, Erebus thought it best to do some proper exploration. No longer a brooding march through the snow, but more of a daisy bright walk. He enjoyed the twinkle the snow made when the moon reflected off of it, and thought it lovely as he went along.

Barely any creatures stirred within the tundra at night, the cold made any traveling a disturbance. Yet Erebus didn't mind, the evening was so usually and typically cold. The fire within, the love for his kind and his goddess, kept him mighty warm enough.

Torn... distraught... held captive by pure disarray. What had once been her life was no longer known. Her husband, Erebus-.. even the other impudent souls she once bore alongside he who had been the favored child. Gialel was lost without them.

Where had they gone?

Dead, most likely. Was she wrong to assume so? When a mother, it is any woman's responsibility to hold hope for her offspring. But knowing her children, the feasibility that any had survived was slim. Sabir was a strong man, as was Erebus. After all, the silver touched had taught the child herself. How he could not have such the skill? Nonetheless, her doubt was strong.

The poor lot... Lost, like her, but in different form. Perhaps soon she would join them, and together the Tenebris name would reign forever with the red moon bore upon their backs.

The snow held tight to his feet as he went.
Stopping to shake it through, the man took the opportunity to scan the horizon line. Not many creatures stirred at this time of night, and seldom often would he make many encounters. Most of this land were diurnal or crepuscular, living their lives when they could better see clearly in the sun's light. A Tenebris son, however- a true child of the night, lived and went most easily in only the moon's light.
So, when the man caught the soft and barely noticeable movement of another, his ears perked and his eyes fixated. A dark creature, such as he, though their features remained mostly obscured from this distance.

He chuffed to catch their attention, though it held more of a whisper. Silence was a nightly stalker's friend, and the man saw it within his best interest to remain rather undetected from afar.

A sudden sound struck the ear, quiet like a whisper. Then a movement caught the eye. Gialel was no longer alone in this mountains. But who found themselves here?

Slowly, the woman's head rose. A crimson red stare struck the area affront her, cold and sharp. She was not fond of strangers, as they were not always fond of her either.

By now, her presence was no secret — so why attempt to conceal herself? The murky figure took a step forward, tail lifting high over her backside. “Come out from where you hide!” Something far from a kind voice called over the distance; commanding, severe.. leveled and stern. If they did not show themselves soon, her patience would wear far from thin. And Gialel was not a well tempered creature when such an event occurred.

Their voice rang out, and brought a distilled silence out of an already quiet forest. Any nightly sound that stirred was quelled by their sound.
And the pang of familiarity pinged through his ears and skull like a bouncy ball, where he searched for the placement.

Mother..?

So the man crept closer, making no sign to hide himself though the darkness of the night would easily make an untrained eye have a difficulty in locating his form. Only his orange eyes, burning like embers within, would catch the silver twinkle of the moon and her stars.
Said eyes inspected the other, with poised curiosity and eagerness. It would take a moment for his brain to come to terms with the sight.

"Mother..?"

He finally spoke, voice almost hesitant. To be wrong would be embarrassing. Imagine recognizing a complete stranger as your parent, only to discover that all thoughts were wishful thinking. Allowing for the possibility of jest to ensue- such names as "mama's boy" and "lost pup" would be reasonable in their use if such a thing did indeed occur.

Erebus hoped he wasn't wrong.

Closer... closer, he crept. Gialel took a pace backwards, snout lowered, fur bristling, and teeth bared. She did not like how near he was, as was evident by her blatant body language.

But then when he spokes his words, the dark woman stiffened. Mother?

He hesitated afterward. Her ears then pricked, lifting high. Gia began to wonder. There were children she'd once left behind, but could this be one? Of the lot, only one represented this thickly coat. Erebus, he had been the closest to her in his youth. But she would not make any assumptions. He would tell her who he proclaimed to be, and she would judge from there.

“Speak your name, boy- so I may know who it is that calls me mother.”

The voice entered his ears again, and too did spin and play with his mind. It must be, it had to be. There was no way it couldn't be.
Erebus stopped, fearful of setting her off. Not that he was afraid of being torn to shreds, but afraid that she would run off. And the answer of who she was would never be answered.

He was often pleased with sharing his name, yet this time he hesitated. Like he was going to be wrong, or he wasn't someone she would care to find.
"Erebus Tenebris, my lady." There was a troubled look on his face as he waited for her reaction.

Erebus Tenebris. Yes, it was a familiar name.

The woman's head lifted slowly, rising to a leveled stature similar to his own. She stared coldly for a moment, lid narrowed almost to a slit. There was no doubt, now, that he was who he'd claimed to be. All of the pieces fit; yet still, part of her wished it weren't true. Gialel had set herself apart from a children years ago for a reason. But now that these two were reunited, what sort of mother would she be to turn away so eagerly?

“So it is true, then. You are my son.” She eventually spoke, clear and with a heavy sigh in tow.

“Some time has passed... How have you fared, Erebus?”

Her coldness washed over him like liquid nitrogen, the fire of his heart burned low and allowed the freeze of the tundra to finally reach his bones. He expected her to be elated, to cheer at his reappearance. At his last thought, Erebus even thought himself dead. To be walking and living, with only wounds he had gain from being here, was a miracle that the goddess high-on would herself seldom perform.
Yet she was distilled, almost stoic. There was a sigh at the recognition, even, as though it were an inconvenience to reunite.

The man's paws halted any further movement. He did not feel worthy enough to approach any closer. The creature that births the almighty is the almighty themselves.

He felt obligated to impress the warqueen, and thus straightened his stance to deliver his achievements upon her request.

"This land has been kind to me. I have spread our holy lineage and have begun to form a kingdom to the south." He studied hard her expression- those intense red eyes- for her reaction. Hoping so terribly that his success would bring her pride.
He wanted so dearly to inquire of her own whereabouts, yet ruled against it. It would be out of his place and station to ask her if she did not readily give the information on it's own.

The boy, her son.. it would take time to process. At first he was hesitant in his words, but later he stood tall. A true warqueen's child. By appearance, anyway. Gialel wasn't so sure yet if whether he had lived up to this legacy.

“You begin a kingdom, but live with another? Why?” The concept confused her, almost more-so than it enraged her. Why is it that hearts nowadays are so soft? “Soon, this territory will be an enemy of yours. Why act to have befriended them now? You will only be turning your back to them later, so there is no point.”

Their first encounter anew and this was the behavior she would endure from her son? Pitiful. But could she be so disappointed? Perhaps Erebus had other intentions. Either way, she could not know without first interrogating the boy.

A mother's words- in every way that they could heal they could torture. They split into his chest and stung his heart, he felt his pride wain- he felt so small when compared to her magnificence. He waited for her to be done speaking entirely, even a few seconds after the fact to avoid any possibility that he may interrupt her.

His own words felt like a brick in his belly. Hard to choke up and spit out.

"I have an intimate relationship with their leader. I hope to use it to my benefit later, while my kingdom finds it's feet." Though the lovely Sorina held his heart in such sure grasp- this was his original intention at the very least. He wondered to himself if his own plan had changed without his knowing. "For resources and the like." His words felt scattered as he rushed to justify himself.

"Our numbers are small, and recruiting more has been a harsh effort." Perhaps she would sympathize with his effort and see he was working best with what little he started with. Or perhaps she would scold him for not trying hard enough.

Either way, he braced his heart for her voice.

Gialel straightened, gaze still harsh, but now curious.

An intimate relationship... with a different kingdom? But then, how could she scold him? After all, she had done the same thing by marrying a man of a different clan than her own. She could pour harsh words upon him for such foolery; but, fortunately for Erebus, she knew better.

“At least you are making use of your circumstance.” Praising words, but none given so easily heartfelt. “Keeping her resources close will fare better for you in the coming days... but you must not let this- "relationship" falter; lest you come close to losing it all and perhaps even creating an enemy for yourself.” A bit of motherly advice, and some given from experience.

His numbers were small. Such knowledge was nerve wrenching. She had been gone for so long, but his efforts had been slow all the while. Recruiting could be difficult, but not if one had enough willpower to make it not so.

“How many?” She pressed further into the details of this new kingdom of his. Whether he thought it was her right to be involved at all, she would learn what she desired and he would not stop her.
