Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

New pack, new faces to learn. Scabiosa is aware of this, and knows she should be going out of her way to meet the other wolves here - but she's nervous. It's been so long since she's officially been within a group and not meeting them to learn and then leave. Not here, she chose to join and she's going to stick around. If not for herself, then the rest of the pack if she ever does talk to them. She grimaces before plopping her butt onto the ground.

Maybe she can hunt for someone and bring it back as a gift? For Tib's mate or for their children? She did say she wanted to meet them, to see who he ended up sticking to when she didn't think he was the type. Whatever - she'll talk to whoever she sees first. The worry is here for no reason.

The mother flitted through the underbrush of the Vale, as if chased by some unforeseen assailant. Her pace was curious, as it was not in true haste but was only made to appear so. Just as curious were the words she called out behind her, "Little darlings, come this way!" all tossed over her shoulder in a cascade of laughter. She wondered if her children had actually followed her, of if they had gotten distracted a long way back.

Eventually she would have to turn back to look for them, in this small impromptu game of chase turned hide-and-seek, but in this moment, it felt good to move in this manner. It was nice to do it alone.

"Oh!" she called out once more, but this time it was not in mock-surprise. The shock rang very true to her as she came across a woman, one in which she had to do a double-take to ensure she did not know. The Priestess didn't often come across those she didn't know within her Vale, and to be certain, she lapsed into confusion. "My apologies, I —" she began, then paused with a knick of a smile parting her lips, and her ears pivoting several times to find a comfortable position.

Jutting her nose forward, she allowed scent to do the talking.
"You've come across Tiberius?" the woman noted, ready to hear some tale about her husband-to-be and whatever escapade upon which he met their newest, colorful cohort.

There's a voice in the distance, but Scabiosa does not notice right away. She's too focused on various ways she could introduce herself to the other wolves (even though a simple 'hello' would be perfect). It takes up until the start of an apology flashed through her ears. Scabiosa stands up, turns around to face the stranger. She's a light color, one Scabiosa might call colorless, but there's a tint in there somewhere. She's got the smell of the pack all over her, Scabiosa sort of feels like the odd-one out now. Ittl change with time.

The woman speaks before Scabiosa has a chance to tell her to not apologize, and honestly that's probably for the best that she did. The question is not surprising - she's sure Ca- Tiberius. Hasn't talked to anyone about her showing up. At least not yet? She's got no idea the customs of this pack.

"I did." Scabiosa returns. "He invited me to join you."

Scabiosa is unaware of the status between the woman and Ca- Tiberius, but even if she did the conversation would probably go much the same.

"I'm Scabiosa." Carefully leaving out the last names. "Your name is?"

The multi-hued woman seemed to be just as surprised to see another as she was, whirling around to see just who addressed her. When Olive finally allowed for a response from her cohort, she explained she had indeed met Tiberius — in fact, he was the one who had allowed her entrance. With such context out in the open, Olive visibly softened. The woman had never thought herself the enforcer type, but when it came to the sanctity of the Vale, she would tread into uncomfortable waters.

"That's lovely,” she hummed honestly, smiling and taking a step backwards, into a seated position. "I'm Olive, the Priestess of this realm.” though, at the moment, she didn't feel very sanctified. Her children barely gave her enough time to practice her craft, but they were getting older and older. She attempted to remember that anything sacred came from intention and focus presence; and in this way, she did her best for her parenting to act as a substitute for ritual.

Far too many intimate details for a relative stranger.
"Where do you come from?” the pale sylph asked, cocking her head to the side. A perfectly plausible question, for two wolves only just coming to know each other. It was important for her to know what her pack members had come from, so she could best assist them to get where they were going.

Lovely? An odd way to put someone joining the pack, or meeting Tiberius, but Scabiosa won't dwell on that for too long. Perhaps she's just being kind, doesn't seem odd for the woman in front of her. A priestess? Scabiosa wonders how high up that one is - pretty high up maybe. She's not sure what that word means, but it sounds pretty.... Powerful? Scabiosa isn't sure what word to put there. It sounds something. She should probably do some research on the ranks here at some point...

The question hits her like a truck. Scabiosa isn't planning on telling anyone about the tribe, or what she did there - but even if she wanted to it would feel too odd. Scabiosa doesn't have anything nice to say about her time there - bad after bad kept happening, most of her life back then was filled with some kind of bad feeling. She's better off now.

"Not here." Scabiosa pauses, what would she even call it? "I grew up in a pack called the Auric Tribe, but left after some time." She's not sure what to call the land in total, but that should do, right?

"You?"

Olive found Scabiosa to be an interesting creature, somehow straddling the two extremes of 'interesting and open' and 'a little bit cold and unsure.' At first, Olive worried it was she who had put the vibrant woman off with her raucous entrance, but her next answer confirmed why that might be. Tiberius's betrothed did not know a lot about his past and the family he once called his own, but she knew that he did not have the happiest memories there. Perhaps It was the same for this somewhat-solemn shewolf.

Olive attempted to soothe, and to not immediately let Scabiosa know that she, perhaps the only other person in this world, had the smallest iota of insight into what being from the Auric Tribe truly meant.
"I've yet to meet more than a handful of wolves who can claim they are 'from' these lands... perhaps, except my own children.” The Priestess managed a chuckle, eyes glittering in the scattered sunlight as it reflected off the snow. Perhaps Valeska's children could boast the same title, but indeed, those were the few who could.

"Auric Tribe," she tasted the words, wondering if she had ever spoken them, or if she had only ever heard them. "Tiberius has mentioned them before. He... doesn't talk of it, often." That also gave the patchwork newcomer license to not talk about it too, if perhaps the memories were a little bit too painful. If Scabiosa had ever been the aggressor against Tiberius, she doubted his fiery pride would allow her to step foot within the Vale. Thus, Olive extended empathy, and a willingness to be led forward by wants of Duskguard's newest.
