Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

The strange desert had won over Aplomado's fickle heart, and now with the company of a loose group of canines that she was quickly coming to consider friends, it felt natural for the raven female to settle down into a somewhat more permanent residence. As dusk set in, a tunnel-like hollow in the rock had struck her fancy, and after hitting a dead end, she managed to gain access through a wide crack along the side. On first impression, at least, it would suit her nicely.

As she explored deeper, the ceiling suddenly lowered more abruptly than she had expected, and Aplomado saw stars as a low-hanging rock smacked her straight in the face. “Patecatl’s balls,” she hissed, startling her corvid friend into flight. The crow fluttered around the cavern for a moment, scattering dust and eventually slipping out through a skylight. By the time the dust settled, Aplomado's vision had acclimatized to the relative darkness, and details of the rocky tunnel began to reveal themselves.

A wide entrance chamber narrowed into a smaller depression that would make a fine sleeping area, and the whole length was punctuated with rough ledges she could repurpose as shelves. Perfect for her collection of herbs and miscellanea.

It took several trips, but eventually she retrieved the various objects she had stashed around the vicinity, and arranged them into an untidy pile in the main chamber of the cave. Real organization could wait until tomorrow, but there was at least one thing she had to place before nightfall, and Aplomado gingerly retrieved it from her stash — a raven skull, crammed with sage and with two chunks of turquoise wedged into the sockets that served as eyes. She had had to make a new one since arriving in these unfamiliar lands, but it would serve as a fine little shrine to the great healers, and she propped it up high in the corner.

“Ma ixpāntzinco, Patecatl.” She indulged in a nibble of her favoured pincushion-like cactus and slowly drifted off to sleep, with vibrant visions of the gods colouring her reveries.
