Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

Set in the unnamed land between Duskguard & Haldis. Vague date since idk if she & Vera will start traveling together or not after her 1st thread. @Aries

Eating was something Angelica did out of necessity, nothing more. She found little enjoyment in the act & much less in the hunt.

The sun had mostly set, for which her odd right eye thanked her. The asymmetrical, piercing pain bright light caused was enough coercion to restrict her active hours to those when the sun was not present— if she felt particularly daring, then perhaps one could find her out on overcast days.

Sticking to the shadows had its benefits. Like her, many common prey species were crepuscular, taking advantage of the low light without compromising their sight too drastically. Knowing this from her time in another realm, she stalked the plains for small creatures: voles, & if she was lucky, snowshoe hares. A lone wolfess as frail as she had no chance against an ungulate of any sort, so she wouldn't bother, despite the scent of a small herd nearby wafting her way.

Stopping in her tracks, her ears twitched. Swiveling, triangulating, they pinpointed the location of something skittering below the snow. With precision, she lined up her narrow snout like an archer lining up a shot. Then, in a flash: her jaws shot forward, clamping down on a tiny, squeaking thing that squirmed in her grasp. With a satisfying crunch, she more or less swallowed it in one go.

Voles were but a morsel to a wolf. One down, many more to go.

Outside of the Frostfang Vale, there was the grounds of prey lounging. Voles and rabbits galore ; the tundra was rather plentiful surprisingly. There wasn't much of a food scarce, Aries's belly was often full if not from her own catching and the caches. She would pray to the heavens for this thankfulness, for the new life given was not one yet with hardships as many wolves experienced. She knew, she was very fortunate.

To a prowl she went, skulking through the grounds as she hovered outside of the vale. A rabbit hung in the distance, and the closer she got.. Was a lunging and a chase down between, perhaps too close to elsehwere that she liked, as Aries bounded after this rabbit, and eventually had to dealt with the paw to give up, for she realized her legs could not reach in time. A losing battle for one, but another hunt for later..

"Oh, apologies, I hope I didn't disrupt your hunting," and she realized she was not alone through her chase out here. A smile of embarrassment, as she realized this pretty woman perhaps saw that!

Skill: Trickster

Hurried footsteps crunched snow underfoot nearby, drawing Angelica's attention. It was another wolfess, pale in coloration like herself. She was in pursuit of something: a hare, by the looks of it. But it outmaneuvered her, & she soon gave up the hunt. Angelica took a few steps closer, noting her bashfulness.

“Not at all. But maybe we could hunt together,” She offered with a little smile, Romanian accent shining through her speech. By the number of scents carried in the other woman's pelt, it was clear she was a pack wolf. Angelica was not, nor did she know if she wanted to be one, at the moment. But one thing was for certain: She had far more to gain from their cooperation. Especially given her tendency to get fatigued quickly.

“I'm Angelica. What's your name?”

"That would be delightful." She had lost the hare, but perhaps could make it up with someone else altogether. Her nose twitched lightly as she bent to the ground, a smell of a various other animals to the bake, she could even tell there was a tracking of a herd that passed by.. Although the most present that her nose could detect was that of the various voles around, maybe with the two of them they could play a luring game to gather a bit..

Oh! She got distracted for a moment.

"I am Aries, a pleasure," she said smiling.

Sorry I'm slow!

Angelica gave a polite dip of her head with a soft smile when Aries introduced herself. A pretty name for a pretty lady.

“I've just been snacking on voles, but maybe together we could grab something bigger,” She suggested. A deer would be tricky for her even with a partner, but she was willing to try it if Aries was. They could maybe pick off a weak or a younger one. She remembered having done so successfully before, in another land where her physical state was just as fragile. But she wasn't completely useless; being the way she was meant she had a sharp eye for the perfect target, no matter how well the quarry hid their weakness. From there, she was usually the chaser, letting stronger individuals do the heavy lifting.

"It takes one to know one," The saying went. Not always accurate, but here, it fit like a shoe.

"There is a herd, somewhere." Aries bent down and nosed to the snow, she could smell the aroma of voles and lemmings all over ; but since she had caught the previous smell of the caribou, it was still upon her prowl.. She could smell the distinguish scent between it all, "perhaps we could see if there are strays we could handle by ourselves." The snow-kissed wolf said as she smiled at the other, with the lightful inner prayer if they would be lucky to catch that of an injured, or an older one.

"Shall we?" her snout turned away from Angelica with a smile, indicating to the eastern direction where she caught the scent.
