Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

Sleep came easily to Callahan these days, his body tired from frequent excursions in the range to tracking down where Rhett had gone. The man's sudden disappearance hurt Cal in a way he didn't ever want to feel. It was a betrayal, a breaking of the sacred binds of trust. He could only chalk it up to the man not wanting to have the burden of responsibility on his shoulders. For whatever reason, Rhett was gone, and Cal wasn't going to let it stop him from striving for his future.

However, the man didn't expect to wake up in a dream world. His dreams in the past had sent him home, gave him a taste of what he once had. The taste of whiskey lingered on his tongue when he woke in the meadow, the laughter of his family rang quietly in his ears as birdsong filled the air. Despite his acceptance of his life, Callahan missed his past. He missed his freedom, the rush of a good heist, and most of all, his family. Every day felt like another step away from them, a slow-growing chasm that refused to let him hang within two worlds. No, it wanted him to pick one, and it seemed that it would soon be picking for him.

Callahan dragged himself onto his feet to carefully explore this new world he had awakened in. It was obviously not the valley, that he was sure of. But the expansive spread of grass seemed similar enough. Did his mind dream up something new? As the man continued on, his eyes noticed a somewhat familiar shape in the distance. The soft fur resembled the lady that usually accompanied him, and he paused. If it were a dream, was he wanting something? The answer was yes, but he didn't want to admit it. Cal was sweet on Miss Bunny, but he weren't sure she'd feel the same. He was an old brute, and she was spring incarnate. She was soft, delicate. And he was rough, ugly. But in a dream, there would be no hesitations.

Penthesileia’s dreams were always a toss up these days. They teetered between her new life as a wolf and her old one as a young human woman. But most of all, all her dreams always had a murky haze to them. She had never been this… aware, this in control, with this much clarity before. The very idea of knowing she was asleep, of having such vivid recollections of falling asleep curled up in her cozy little nest back in the valley besides Callahan's, and yet being aware enough to recognize the dream for what it was –- that was a bizarre notion indeed.

She rose to her paws, feeling the tall grass tickle the low hang of her belly as she surveyed the scenery before her. It was a familiar sight, a stunning landscape very similar to the valley she now called home, but it felt like looking through rose tinted glasses. It was all very romantic in coloring and that in itself was an interesting thing to note. She looked around, ears twitching in curiosity as she put her nose up close to a pretty little flower. She took a deep breath, her nose twitching as she inhaled the sweet fragrance of the blossoms, before a tickle of pollen caused her nose to crinkle. She let out a barely controlled sneeze as she recoiled away from the flower. She blinked, backing away from the flower as she felt another oncoming sneeze take hold of her. Achoo! she let out, paw raising to rub at her nose while her sides heaved from the sudden influx of sniffles, soft green eyes starting to water. “Goodness, Bunny, this is why we don’t sniff the pretty flowers.” She spoke to herself, completely and utterly unaware of the show she was putting on for a certain someone.
