Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

Having waited until the fools dissipated, Sabira finally left the hill and struggled down to the river in the distance. It's coolness called to her, even more-so when she got close and could hear it's relaxing trickle.

She did as she did before, in the oasis at the edge of the desert. Plunging herself in, one foot at a time and allowing the chilled water to heal her bones. Oh, how the water did cleanse one's soul. It was almost holy, if Sabira even believed in deities. This moment of relaxation reminded her how tired she was. Studying the tree line across the water as she swam from shore to shore, the she-wolf flattened flowers with intent.

How beautiful these flowers were, their delicate petals a peaceful glance into a life unlived. How it must be to just be a flower. To feed the bees and then the worms. No obligation, no desperate clinging to life itself.

She stared down at her paws, and how she trampled them as she went along. Why, her and flowers were quite similar after all. Always being trampled on by the stupid and misplaced.

This drowsiness did make her so philosophical and sentimental. The pale snake hurried to slumber, where the trees met the plains. In the hollow of undergrowth and ground coverings. Shrouded in the only way a white wolf could.

And though she did stare longingly into the fields for a while, well into the night when the stars and moon bathed the plains in an ethereal glow- eventually, she did find slumber. A rest that only lasted until first light, but a slumber all the while.

When she woke, she was so perfectly eased to have been left alone. No disturbances, no disruptions. Well, except for the nightmare that had risen her in the first place. No such thing as a perfectly peaceful night, after-all.
Sabira took her morning leisurely and only decided to study the flowers and relax a while. Much needed rest and relaxation for her aching muscles and bones. Thankfully her wounds no longer plagued her, only their stinging aftertaste. Glad that they were at least healing, albeit slowly.

Vermillion hadn't ventured away from Elkshire for quite a long time ; even as they grew older and permissions had laxed more to venture out.. Even where her siblings had disappeared into somewhere else altogether, she still couldn't. There was dangers, but there was also something enticing as many attempted to lure the babe outside of the religious domain — but she hadn't, not yet until the word of Greenwood had struck her mind and she had gained permission to venture to. Now, did she live under her name — and her freedoms expanded.

She took some time staying within the outcrops, adjusting to the openness and the pack altogether. There was no elk, there barely trees.. And there was no clear border besides smell of where to stop — and so Vermillion continued to beyond their borders, knowing quite well that the scent was gone but she marched onwards, until she was at the interpass of water.

Across was an array of flower fields, and she looked at it with such a want.. But was afraid to cross the river. She didn't notice the figure just yet.

It was the smell that had made the pale woman lift her head. Her nose first twitched before leading her in the direction it most likely came from. The wind the rushed over the river seemed to carry it, and so she stood and walked over placidly. Limping her way there, trying to be as careful with her wounds as possible. Expecting a soaking creature on her side but, no.

There was a young woman across the water, Sabira's eyes narrowed and watched for a while. They didn't seem to notice her, rather they were staring into the river. The way their paws twitched and their body eased forward made the woman curious.

"Are you hesitating?" She called. Her voice neither friendly nor threatening, yet had an air to it as though she was calling the girl out for her fear.

There was a woman nearby, and she was pale. Yet, it almost looked like there was wings upon her ; for what seemed to be someone who looked of pure white wasn't exactly, almost fooling the young Deorwine. She had never seen someone.. So pale like her. Where it almost felt like blasphemy just looking, like the High Elk was telling her as she was told all her life, before her was evil itself, despite posing nothing like so. It brought a shiver, a moment, her tail tucking between her legs and looking meekly at the other.

She was safe though, at the very least. Whatever sin she held, would stay across the waters. For a moment though those thoughts even surprised her, because for the moment, those who held the unholy colors, were often far more nicer then those who were.. Defined as divine. She frowned at herself, before shaking her head and looking at the pale wolf, nodding at her.

Sabira pitied the child, and did so openly with a frown and complexly furrowed brow. Yet it was no scorn, only a sympathetic glare. The pale woman continued to stare at her after a brief glance into the river's water.

"You must not let fear consume you." She said plainly, though her voice boomed across the rush and trickle of the water, hoping to reach innocent ears.
Despite her wounds she stood proud, wondering if the child could tell that even a battle damaged woman like she could swim the waters. Hoping that they could find reason to believe that they could too.

Sabira had no intention on seeing out if the kid would cross if they took any longer to make the leap. Nor did she hope for a conversation of any sort when and if she finally made it to the other side.
Something compelled her to share such a message, though the pale woman wouldn't be able to place why. Some divine reasoning perhaps, or a need to teach and feel greater.

They were strange, an enigma within Vermillion's world.

"Oh, um.. Sorry." However the child only felt the need to apologize if she looked at the other strangely. Perhaps stared too long for it was a true strangeness to see someone so pale in the wild. It took realization that out of Elkshire there was variety of different ones, colors she would never know others would have, for some, it meant they were sinners.

But white felt pretty, quite a lot compared to her chest, as she burrowed her head into it.

A tsk left her lips, as if disappointed at the outcome.

"Do not apologize to me, child." She said as she turned, no longer wishing to play-parent to the girl. This lesson she must learn on her own.

"Apologize to yourself."

The woman began her leave and took it slowly, giving the female one last chance to show her strength.

She was confused, looking at the other meekly, not sure how to respond. Should she.. Apologize to herself? There was clear mulling on whether to do this or not, but never made any attempts to vocally say ; somewhat lost on this task. Her ruby-red turns to watch this fleeting figured, a moment of an 'ah.' Came like the wind and would leave like so ; her first encounter to someone so.. Pale. It wasn't as horrible but like a thorn felt prickly — Vermillion couldn't help wonder if anyone else who was as pale, was similar.
