Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

Maybe @Vendrussel ?

Further North than she'd ever travelled, Ciri was drawn to the edge of the world. She'd visited the shores several times before, oftentimes in the company of her mother, and there was a comfort in being close to the water that she couldn't explain. She appreciated the tang of salt that hung in the air and the shifting of earth beneath her paws, but there was something eery about this particular beach that set her on edge.

The young Ostrega moved carefully and with caution, enveloped by thick fog that stirred a quiet fear in her. Her dark ears remained alert, twitching at each little sound outwith the rhythm of nearby waves, and her vivid eyes scanned ahead for any suggestion of threat.

As she patrolled the coast, there was a scent within the air ; familiar a bit, one that reminded her upon meeting @Altair but she knew it not to be him, or the once past Empyrean member she had met. A mixture of another smell altogether, one Vendrussel didn't know and realized it was a stranger, upon the brim. She prowled through until they're very shadow was within the view. Small in structure, petite even that she could make out the others curves even through the bone-thick white.

Tail was high within the air alongside of her head ; a display of dominance as she approached the other, "hail," so said she. Though body language said one, her voice was of calmness compared to one of threatening, or demanding, "what is your business within these sands?"

A voice, from behind. Ciri halted at once, her dark tail sweeping low. Blinking over a slim shoulder, her ears splayed backward and she crouched a little upon seeing the flagging tail of a stranger who approached. She shifted awkwardly in the sand to better face the sea wolf, wary of such a display demonstrated only for her.

“No business,” the young Ostrega chirped in response, cheeks flushing hot beneath her raven furs as she mustered a bashful little smile, “I've just... never been this far, so... you know, exploring?”

"You smell similar to Empyrean," she announced openly and approached closer. The other put on a more submissive stance, crouching lightly and looking up up with a wary expression. Her own tail lowered slightly, and she curiously looked at the other — the smell was there though faint by most likely the travel that it took, but it was no mistaking the similar smell Altair had some time ago. By now he was mixed with the ford and sea-salt, but she was quite curious to see someone of similar age arrive around.

"Be careful going north," so she warned, but being vague on what. At the moment seemed like there was a lot, to attacks of her own and the mountain itself disappearing — the tundra was shifting rather strangely at the moment, that any should be wary of such changes. Even someone that Vendrussel didn't know, and though she was cautious of any not known.. The woman wasn't so awful to wash the other way or attack upon the sight.

The answer seemed appropriate enough for the silver-kissed stranger, and Ciri let herself relax a little. She continued to watch for any sign that her demeanour might alter and prepared herself to flee should the need arise. Much to her surprise it was only an observation that came, not a threat.

Her ears pricked forward, curious to hear the title of her family's pack on the tongue of a wolf so far from their claim. Her aunt and uncle and many other Ostregas were well-travelled, so she supposed Empyrean might be more well-known than she realised.

“My aunt and uncle lead Empyrean,” she offered as an explanation, “the mountain is my home.”

For now, she mused. Fast approaching her second birthday and with a wanderlust that'd plagued many an Ostrega through generations, Ciri was very much beginning to consider her own dispersal.

She simply did not wish to wound her mother in making that decision.

Her newest acquaintance pressed on, mentioning that she ought to be careful should her travels take her further North. “Oh, uh... thank you!” A valuable piece of information, though the blackbird reached for more, “Is it dangerous?”

"Then you know of Altair," she so deducted. They were related ; another Ostrega upon the wind with familial ties she not not of their traits. Met the son and the father but yet any other, as they stood secluded on their mountain. Vendrussel's gaze wandered to their direction, but the large mountainscapes blocked any look to what would be, "he has joined my ford," she so then added. Did she know as well? It was a wonder if any of Empyrean knew of the boys whereabouts, as she knew the parents must, but the members remained such a mystery. .. Though if she didn't know of Dragonford either, that the discussion didn't seem to be going anywhere.

Vendrussel hid her disappointment, and then nodded, "Not only do mountains seem to come and go," a wary eye to where The Moving Garden was.. "there are greedy wolves within it's claim, just to those mountains," her paw ventured to Northfall, "they have caused some trouble. I pray they do not give you trouble." There was a lot happening in that section, blood-hungry wolves (for only hers) and mountains that disappeared. Her mind wanted to form a connection but knew it wasn't there, just that it was dangerous area. She of course, kept going into — for danger was not much of a worry for a dragon.

Ciri lifted her dark ears at the mention of a familiar name, one which made her tail stir. “He's my cousin,” she chirped in response, excited to learn of his whereabouts. She recalled asking her mother where Altair had gone, but her answer had been vague. It is the way of young wolves, sometimes, Nyx has stated solemnly, for no living mother wished to lose her offspring to wanderlust, to disperse and carve their own path in life.

The young Ostrega did want to experience that freedom, but she hated to think of how her absence would make her mother feel. They'd lost each other once before, and Ciri was reluctant to let go again.

She followed the strange she-wolf's gaze Northward, but the fog was too thick to see the spires where greedy, selfish wolves apparently made their home. Ciri took note, keen to avoid conflict. “Thanks,” she said, returning her bright eyes to the sea-dweller's face, “I'm Ciri, by the way. What is your name?”

"Family of his is always welcomed, we are still in discussion of what our familiarity entails," Vendrussel laughed lightly within a responds, lightly hinting that neither they were completely unknowns, she would think, and yet weren't officially allies of any sorts. She hadn't yet to even meet @Hydra due to the distance, and neither are able to visit with circumstances following.. The dragoness did not wish to leave the isle, for if she did she felt an attack would come at the moment there was realization — especially since the distance was more then a few days travel, and even-more depending on the conversations that took. Although the last she knew, there was pups that the Matriarch currently was having, and imagined, they are well-weaned.

"I am Vendrussel," she said, smiling.
