Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

Unfortunately, even if she wanted to learn more about being a medic, Uriel didn't have the appropriate knowledge. The plains were not a place she was familiar with when it came to herbs, and most seemed rather.. Useless, in that sense. She didn't realize how many were actually growing over the east, and passed by them without any thought. Her movement headed toward the mountains, where she knew at least some of the plants that had healing usages — but couldn't say she would really know their names, or what they do.

Uriel knew poppy seeds though, as most, if not all do.

She came across peppermint, something she knew very well, for the scent was so recognizable. It did bring a wonder though, could peppermint be used in some way? She remembered seeing medics carrying it, for Uriel could smell the aftermath of it upon them. But she didn't know what it was..

Weren't some plants, turned into juice to be eaten by patients easier?

..Hesitantly, did she crane her neck over to take a bite out of the plant.

Olive didn't venture far from Frostchant these days (she had her fill of new lands and new creatures, thank you very much), but she did wander into the lowlands to search for the boy @Archon, and perhaps find some hint as towards his fate. She hadn't seen the multi-colored yearling since before she had left, and he had seemed eager to go on an adventure — she figured he had taken her absence as reason enough to explore his own path, but Olive couldn't help and feel somewhat bereft at not having the chance to say goodbye, and wish him well.

Olive was on one such wandering when she came across a familiar golden coat, looking curiously at some flora. The woman pointed her nose at the form, interested in any stranger who happened to be close to Cloudrest, and might have seen some sign of the boy. She took one step, then two steps closer, and it registered all at once — the golden coat that had plucked her straight from Boomba's freezing waters, and ushered her away to safety. The one who had saved her, yet knew nothing of her, and owed her even less. Olive bounded forward, unable to withhold her approach or do something more graceful. "Hey, wow!" she called out in wonder, prancing all but several feet away.

There she stood upon dancing tenterhooks, and blinked at the occupied woman, amazed at the luck of coming across her once again, in a far more amenable setting. "It's you!"

The voice startled her, she lowkey chocked on the herb and fit onto a coughing storm. Through a teary look did she see the light ashy woman, no more was she captured under a blubber of lard and peacefully wandering through the mountains. Though a distinct note he wasn't there, where to the point upon that faithful day it started to feel the rest of the group were a third wheel on it's own. As the coughing fit occurred she happened to swallow, the very.. Bitter-like plant, as she tried to catch her breath.

"H," she swallowed a final gulp of air to settle, "hello, how are you?" she seemed a lot better at the very least as Uriel smiled warmly upon her. She caught her name by chance ; Olive, but didn't truly know her. A pure chance she came upon the situation, and felt it wasn't right to simply pass by like nothing happened. Those of the world have to survive together — and Uriel didn't have it in her heart to ignore someone in need.

Immediately, Olive realized she should have announced her arrival in a less surprising manner — and she grimaced sheepishly as the women, spun of golden silk, coughed and sputtered. But Olive was just as surprised as Uriel; imagine, finding the heroine from your dreams, who existed in one's life for only a moment (and played such a significant role), only to slip from it without any deeper understanding of what she meant to her own lived experience... Olive was thrilled to have another chance at this.

But first— "Goodness, are you okay?" she questioned, her ears craning forward, so much so that the pale woman was sent forward herself, a step or two. Olive (already feeling familiar with this veritable stranger) might have placed a paw on her silken shoulder, incase she might truly be choking. Eventually, the coughing subsided, with no medical interruption from either healer, and gave Olive space to answer the next question.

"I am wonderful," Olive said, taking another step; now, their fur touching. "I am alive," she said, the words carrying their own innate weight, but she colored them with inflection anyways. "Who are you?" the woman questioned finally. She didn't know her name, didn't know where she was from, what pack she called home... nothing.

She smiled lightly, a nod in thanks for the woman offering to help if it did get worse, "Apologies, i'm experimenting with herbs and their.. Uses, or ways to use them." Embarrassing as it was, it was better to say so then have the other assume she was just eating plants, just because. Though Uriel feasts on berries and fruits, she wasn't such a vegetarian that she would result into eating flowers and so. She couldn't imagine any that tasted right, or at the very least provided substance a wolfs body needs.

.. Or did they? It brought another question that would need to test for another day, as the golden dame gently learned forward and slipped the rest of the paste out of her mouth. She couldn't find it in her stomach to taste anymore. Maybe that was how other wolves discovered its uses.. If it tasted bad, did that mean it was helpful?

She didn't mind the closeness, but would internally admit to feeling a bit warm in touch. A nervousness, taking over just a bit as she thought of herself as someone forgettable within the moment, and was slightly surprised that Olive had remembered her. An embarrassment, she supposed ; as she would like to be someone who disappeared like so. Uriel wasn't a hero, after all, she thought of herself useless during the battle due to unable to fight or heal.

"I am Uriel, I live within the plains," she said politely, keeping her smile.

Olive was no stranger to the concept of foraging, or vegetarianism. In many ways, her body felt its best whenever she was ingesting plants and alternative means of aliment (varying from tubers and roots, to fungus and mushrooms) — plants could sustain creatures as large as bears, after all — but there was no replacement for meat and blood, and the rush of vitality that came with its consumption.

The born-herbalist nodded in silent agreement, holding back a smile, trying to quell the rush of her heart (and mind) when she realized that Uriel was not only interested in medicines, but was a curious, inquisitive soul; to assure the success of the first endeavor, the second was a great asset. “There is no better way to catalogue herbs, and make friends with their meanings." she agreed wholeheartedly, noting how the golden women seemed to find mint.... unpalatable. Olive couldn't say she disagreed, but the bitting coolness of peppermint was what made it such an incredible medicine for calming inflamed minds & bodies.

The nameless woman finally revealed herself. “Well met, Uriel of the Plains." Olive greeted with appropriate deference, tilting her head to the side in another nod of approval. Olive had many things to mention — plant medicine, the packs and history of the plains — but of course, she couldn't help but remark upon the events that had come to pass. There was far too many unknowns to move past in yet, in the regard. “How did you possibly find yourself in the frigid tundra, amongst an army of my dearest comrades and heroes?” she said dramatically, hoping to convey the oddity of helping a complete stranger in such a way.

Olive didn't know if she would have done it, if she came upon an anonymous soul in need of such dire assistance. Not at risk of her own life, no. Perhaps this was one of the (many) areas within which Olive still had much spiritual learning to do.

"I don't know about herbs and the healing arts too well, so i'm trying to, at the very least." It felt reassuring she was doing something right and felt her chest beat just a bit within that warmth. Some wolves offer tidbits here and there — but the reality was she was mostly on her own with this being. Though it was a shame to say since she didn't know the names, often or not was only going by taste. Flowers — was something Uriel was familiar with, but not their uses.

"Oh, I didn't think.." She wasn't sure how to explain so. She, a complete stranger rushing to help the aid of others ; surely others would think of her as bonkers, especially when the golden dame tended to run from danger itself, and been within it far too many times. At the point she was 'retired,' and if could, avoid those dangers, "It isn't right to pretend to be a bystander when someone is in need," was that maybe it? There wasn't much thought into the adrenaline that rushed to her soul, the charging and quick movements as many saw the same she saw ; witnessing the disaster of so.

"I would hope if someone saw me in the situation, they would do the same." She said, with an honest smile.

She spoke of her honest intentions, and intuitively, Olive understood that Uriel was not simply trying to sweeten the pot with platitudes. She seemed earnest, and true, and the seraph-woman found that endearing. If Olive had come across the same situation, Olive would have advised, or offered her healing prowess; Uriel, like she, was no great warrior. Olive didn't want to die; she had so much to live for, and so much that the gods needed her to do on this plane of existence, in this life.

Olive smiled at such an idea, the pursuit of truth and neutrality for the simple sake of hoping that balance might reflect back onto you. In this case, Olive would personally see to making sure that happened. "Do you wish to know herbs and healing?" she questioned, her voice and eye bubbly bright, striding past Uriel into the overgrowth of peppermint, and she nosed the small, wrinkled leaves. "Perhaps the only true form of repayment would be found in the dissemination of such knowledge," Olive suggested with a flourish of her serpentine tail. Olive had much to teach, and little intention of keeping such knowledge inside of herself.
