Above the greater rubble of Cymru Keep… Above the weather-struck roofs and semi-intact rooms and grass-strewn courtyards… There rose towers. The tall structures of bleached-white stone seemed to jut from the corpse of the dead keep like protruding rib bones. Slender windows, cut into the ivory-colored rock, allowed wind to whistle in, and the gaze of shining eyes to peek out. For the new denizens of the Keep, scampering and prowling around the bones of the metaphorical corpse, these towers could serve anew their ancient purpose; if, at at first, they are rediscovered.
Edgewise the cat blinked, as he considered the towers of the ‘bone-zone’, or House, or whatever it was called. He had seen rocks before, even big ones, but never rocks that had stacked themselves like this, in such oddly flat and geometric and orderly ways. It was disturbing… As though some great paw must have shaped these stones to an unknowable purpose, and then… left them here. Would they come back someday, those great paws that had built this place? Would they return in the night, and pluck out the nascent WillowClan like they were invading pests?
Edgewise blinked again. The tower he was assigned to climb and explore wasn’t becoming any more explored the longer he sat here, ruminating over it. It was only one of the several towers of the Keep, but because it was the one he was set to explore, he was imagining it as some kind of enemy, full of hidden threats and dark, grasping claws. He shook these thoughts away as he considered what he already knew about the tower. He had wandered its base before, moved around the periphery, and right up to one of the odd, rectangular entrances near the ground floor. This ground floor entrance was half-full of rubble and stone which had, at some point in the Keep’s decrepit recent history, tumbled down from above to form a pile. The rubble-pile had already served Edgewise as a neat little hunting spot; shrews tended to wiggle about in and around the pile, hunting even tinier bugs. Where the bugs crawled, the shrews hunted, and where the shrews hunted, there was Edgewise, stalking and leaping.
Edgewise knew there were paths upward from the ground floor, inside the tower. Odd pieces of stone spiraled upward from the bottom, but they were heavily interrupted; broken away or busted down in many places. Ascending those from the bottom would involve jumping and climbing and careful steps along perilous edges. There were other rectangular entrances into the tower; higher-up, and entering it from the flat walkways which abutted the Keep’s battlements. Either entrance gave the cats entry to this tower, but of course they’d have to get up on the battlements themselves first.
He’d be able to share all this with his partner today, Angelic Cannon, depending on how much the other cat already knew about this tower. Edgewise was excited to meet the Maine Coon, and from a seated position, Edgewise’s dark-chocolate tail whisked about with positive energy. His eyes were on the tower again, but his mind was on meeting someone new!
