Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

Edith had been tracking a particular boar for quite sometime now. She had begun to learn their habits—the way that they hunted for truffles on the forest floor, when they napped, and when they roamed. Although their routine wasn’t always exact, Edith had a good idea as to where to find it at any given time.

She wanted to kill it, and had been building up the courage to do so since she had began following the boar. Despite knowing the danger of hunting large prey alone, Edith’s ego and will were mighty.

It was around noon, and Edith knew that the pig was likely bathing in the bank of a stream. It was amusing to watch it splash and prance around—almost endearing … but not entirely there.

She was right. The pig was laying on the stream’s shore, splashing water onto their back. Edith crouched low, sheltered by the forest’s shadows. She made sure to stay still and out of sight, but still in the open enough for anybody with a trained eye could spot her.

Her daughters wandered off, somewhere in the woods to find plants and grubs. She was left alone for the moment — a blessed moment — afforded a luxury she otherwise would not have back home: peace. Not that she didn't love her daughters. On the contrary, she was amazed by their voracious appetite for learning everything around them. It was...too much, combined with their current situation.

It did feel strange to be alone, even in protected territory. But the swirl of lupine scent reminded her that she was not alone, not truly. There was someone somewhere, in every corner...

There, for example. A wolf, crouching, eyes locked on something in the distance. She thought it was Celnes at first, but that was quickly corrected. It was one of her daughters. Edith.

She huffed softly, alerting Edith to her presence behind her. She saw the boar, watching it intently. When was the last time she'd eaten red meat?

Alerted by a unexpected huff, Edith turned towards the sound of the voice. Her heart froze for a split second; had her prey heard the noise? Thankfully, it hadn’t, which had freed her up for a moment to address whoever had had the audacity to distract her observation.

It was one of those bears— Mooksgm’ol specifically. She reeked, and the smell hit her as she turned; Edith wasn’t fond of the urusiline stentch. ”It didn’t hear you,” she hissed, folding back her ears. ”This boar isn’t the most observant, though.” Thankfully, the bear hadn’t messed this up for her.

Watching the other animal, Edith wondered, ”What does she want?” She wore the question of her sleeve.

The girl looked perturbed by Mooksgm'ol's arrival, which...fair, she had to admit. The boar continued snuffling about in the stream as if it were in the safest place in the world, unaware of the two predators eyeing it. “You can catch dem boar on your own?” she whispers, her eyes on the boar as she speaks. “No help?” the idea amazed her. Edith was not only young, but a wolf. Boars were massive, at least the ones she had encountered. She wanted to see if Edith really was up for the challenge.

Mooksgm’ol focused on the boar, so Edith returned her gaze to the stream. ”Yeah,” she lied, whispering. She’d never tried to hunt on her own. It looked easy enough—especially since she had watched this particular boar so often. Edith was confident she could bring it down.

She grunted in quiet affirmative. She'd never seen a wolf hunt like this before, though part of her doubted that such a little creature could. She wondered if Célnes would raise boastful creatures, though she figured part of that may simply lie in being of royalty. The idea still felt strange to her — bears held little regard for bloodline; even other Mooksgm'ol like her were not revered, only respected, and even this could be taken away.

She tilted her head towards the boar. “Show me?” she asks. It's a quiet, subtle challenge of the girl's skill. But she is curious nonetheless.

It was becoming harder to keep her facade—especially with the bear’s subtle challenge. ”The boar isn’t ready to be hunted yet,” Edith fibbed, her eye twitching. It was the only thing that she could think of to save face. ”I’ve been watching it for a while now ..” her mind raced, ”… and I think it’s sick. I’m waiting for it to get a little weaker before I go for it.” Feeling suddenly confident, Edith sat a little taller.

”I’ll make sure to find you when the time comes,” She wouldn’t—she wanted nothing to do with Mooksgm’ol.

Her lips twitched as she held back a smile. Being with her daughters — Siilgit especially — had long trained her in the ways of faking her appearance, and hearing the boasts and lies of children. Edith, while a different species, was no different. Mooksgm'ol took one last look at the boar, confirming her suspicions. “I look forward to it,” she said before lumbering away without another word.

Edith silently watched Mooksgm’ol lumber away, feeling relieved despite the frown that formed on her face. With nothing else to distract her, Edith was free to resume what she’d been doing before she’d been interrupted. She looked towards the boar at the right time—it had gotten up and begun wandering towards the woods. She knew that this particular boar fancied a particular fallen tree nearby that it used to scratch its back and rub their tusks again, and she assumed that was where it was going. Edith gave it a moment to breach the treeline before she followed, and once she moved, she made sure to walk carefully, not wanting to blow her cover.
