Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

On his watch, Tsukiishi's patrols were peaceful lately and this left him still looking to cover more ground, energy to spend. Antares would spin it in whichever way of usefulness might suit him, but overall, he would find out once he got there. His path carried him past the garden, then beyond.

As agreed upon by their empress, Antares intended to give the Everfrost plenty of distance, and hopefully by extension, its residents. It seemed wisest of him to skim its north, but for now, had found the Veils to be aptly placed for today's curiosity. Never before had he delved into this facet of the terrain, at least not for this thorough of a look. His vague hunt trails and general nosiness left him pointing this way anyway, and ahead, the frozen falls loomed, luring him closer and deeper into the seclusion of Hvitske. He would take up on this momentum without much urging, something old and in his blood easily baited by the landscape like this.

Antares had slowed down to a prowl, eyes and ears up; he realized the setting sun then too, streaking vibrant oranges and purple into the gathering clouds.

While none he noticed yet were fresh-fresh, there were already signs of traffic--of several sorts. Noted, though, as he minded himself, looking around steadily before proceeding towards the ice draped down the rocks with interest.

An odd land, where the waters seemed frozen.. She knew the force that a waterfall could cause, and was surprised that even the winter could stop the momentum. Uriel remembers times of grand waterfalls, and yet being so close often met with a certain doom to follow. The thundering water clashing onto another, a crushing defeat as it would be so — so it surprised her, seeing it frozen. At least majority of it, as it seemed like some of it bathed through, as nature, always finds its way.

Uriel was a curious to see more, for where it had frozen and exactly the coldness that brought to. Yet it seems she wasn't alone, as a dark figure was wandering to it as well.. There was a hesitation, for the smell came to the wind that was exactly the following of a pack, and was cautiously wondering, if perhaps this was a claimed land. Yet, there was no markers..

Once the dark scout settled in better, he began to immerse in the scene he had found. It had this faraway deja vu about it to him, but he couldn't place it with any words or earnest explanation--hence the furrow on his expression he wore, trying to remember if it even was his own memory anymore. Antares couldn't get it to clear from the fog, but here, now, it was quite a sight. Rooted to the present, he did remain certain that this fall of ice was new to him, and that he should explore.

He was distracted from craning his neck up for the full view when he realized he was no longer alone. Perhaps similar circumstance both drew them in, but he leveled a curious look towards the new stranger, head tilting to watch. They seemed to be on their own. At least, he could only smell one wolf from here over the frozen pines. He left his posture lax, but subtly threaded in a tension made of wariness about an unknown presence like this, although maybe they had something in common, at least. He doubted he should worry just yet.

“Hi,” he greeted simply, tipping his nose for a small nod to his new company all while trying to gauge the disposition. “Have you been here before?” Antares asked outright, the first thought that jumped to mind past all the usual concerns. Did she know this place any better than he might?

They were friendly, it gave her relief as her muscles unknowingly, untensed. She supposed after encountering a madman in the south, there was a more.. Caution, in the wind to approach strangers, and especially so knowing how packs feel about claiming lands, and their endless reign of territories. But he didn't mention any so, and only asked a few questions.

Uriel approached closer, to the darkened man who saw no other color except for black. Even his eyes were so dark, a blue abyssal, that he was utterly the opposite of this winter wonderland. She held a faint smile, and nodded back politely, "I'm afraid not," she confessed, "this is my first time seeing this area."

He sometimes found it came too easily to just be no one in particular, especially as he held onto his neutrality, only curious if anything as he regarded her and the place they had found. There always remained that distant echo, be anyone a voice he couldn't really name anymore said. Something he wanted to hear, he thought.

He was too far from his pack's boundaries to be prickly about those matters too, and he was still mostly sure she came as a lone traveler. At least for some time, anyway. Antares had met other scouts before and wondered if, maybe she was the same. He usually found them easy to get along with, given his own tendencies. Anyway, though she didn't know the place, he accepted her reply with a nod. “Mm, mine too. I live north, the mountains. Never looked this close here,” he gestured his muzzle from vaguely north then back towards the towering ice. “Was passing by and thought I might as well,” he rolled his shoulders into stride, deciding not to mention whatever else lured him off in the first place. After that he started to step on closer to it, nose stretched out first as investigations continued.

Peering up, then down again, he checked briefly to see what his company was up to about it, too. Antares wouldn't really press beyond that yet. It was up to her how much she shared.

She smiled lightly, "I was thinking the same, though I generally live near the plains in the east." But lately she has been finding herself coming to the north a bit too frequently. There was a lot to see there, and the plains often seemed.. Lonely. It was so vast she could travel for so long and meet no soul within the area — and those few she met, one caused a rather terror, where she avoided the south reigns.

"It almost seems there is something more behind there.." She pointed her paw to the waterfall, there was a darkness that could be spotted through the frozen water, but it wasn't a stone-cold wall that was blocking.. A light that was brought forth and shined into it, showing just the smallest glimmer, there was more to see that from this distance, they couldn't tell what was there.

Plains in the east, he noted with a quiet nod as he tried to visualize the distance. East and south of here both were not within his typical bounds, but he knew he had horizons to expand. With winter tapering off and spring sure to follow in its footsteps, he wanted to indulge more in that soon. “What's out that way in the plains?” he asked, trying to make it sound halfway conversational, before his eyes followed her gesture towards the waterfall.

“Hm.. wonder how far that goes..” he drawled as had sidled up near Uriel to peer past the frozen water, blinking, for he knew the best way to find out was to see for himself. Here, it just looked like dark but he got the sense something went beyond. Maybe it explained the scents of old traffic around here--more than he actually expected to find. “Hope it's not something's doorstep,” he half-snickered, quietly. He shrugged and swished his tail, then stepped past the ice with a curious hum--very much on alert just in case, but with a second set of eyes not far behind his own, he at least had that much.

"Mmm," her smile was rather dry as she tried to explain how.. Lackluster, it really was, "there is not much out there, besides bison and horses. Once a pack out there, but they disappeared." A usual among wolves, where often packs come and go like the win. Either frolicking to a newer, and better place, or otherwise, some simply dispersed. Left one by one until eventually only a few remained that it no longer could be called a pack — and Uriel couldn't help but wonder often which had happened. In the end though, since she had not since met anyone from that area, her questions would be unanswered.

She was a bit hesitant to enter, but as Antares moved past her.. Her paws unwillingly found themselves going after. Curiously ducking behind the edge of the ice ; to be greeted an endless darkness. She took notice though, strangely enough, there was flora growing upon the walls. She stepped closer to sniff a patch of short grass that was upon the floor.. "There's a flower," her voice, full of surprise and yet a pleasantry to discover.

A tiny, but purple one.. Freshly grown.. She didn't know the name.

Considering the delivery, it didn't seem too enthralling out the way he asked about. But, he took all the information he could get while the chance was here. Sounded like a place for larger herd beasts to reign supreme in with no wolf pack to interrupt anymore, based on that much, at least. That could be worth noting if prey ever went scarce in the tundra for some reason. “Sounds quieter than the north then,” he mused lowly. “I considered exploring that way soon,” he imparted as for why his wonderings were relevant.

How soon remained to be seen. He had an inkling to just.. go. It occurred to him that he could. Should? Time would tell.

Broken from his meandering thoughts by Uriel's finding a flower, he perked. “Hm,” he chuffed, leaning to look better and admire it fully. Soft purple petals, a stark contrast to most scenery he had seen about lately. “Not really what I expected to see in here,” he chuffed, having prepared for potentially disturbing local fauna more than this. But just some flowers was really a pleasant surprise in his meager little day. “Spring must be closer than I realized,” he eyed it longer, appreciative with the slow exhale he eased back with. “But that's fine by me. It's nice to see it with all this ice,” he remarked, then stepped on, still sniffing around for more signs of life and just finding some old, worn pawprints.

"With such peace, there are still terrors that roam. More unsuspected then one might think." She grimaced lightly upon those she faced down below ; what seemed so light still held it's part. She warned Antares on the matter, a careful way to grip it was unlike every other land. Though she couldn't deny that the mountains and the southbound lands were not something she explored often, and for all she knew.. Uriel was unfortunate with some encounters. So small, but so impacteful she feared.

"Life finds away," she commented toward the flower, and sniffed it a bit more. Maybe it was the cave..? She knew some caves tended to have their own system going on, especially as sometimes heat would be stored within. It wouldn't be surprising the deeper they go, the more of a flora-scenery they would see. She looked over at him, seeing if he too desired to go deeper.. Then noticed he was looking at an old set of pawprints, within the stone itself. Mud-trapped, into the life of this cave. She tilted her head a curiosity of this.

She elaborated, and he listened carefully with a quirk of a brow before he dipped his nose. Noted. Perhaps even baited further. Something deep down thought it appealed, and he just.. felt like being far away for a little while. Like it would reset something or he had something to gain in the act. Regardless, he knew which way he would be heading next to see what he might be able to see there. He would keep her words in mind along the way.

But as for now, indeed, life impressed him in its tenacity--big and small alike. He nodded deeply, quietly appreciative already. “It does,” he murmured quietly, hardly more than just to himself. Once, he stood as an example of it--barely holding on, stripped of all he had known, but as ever: life found a way. Sometimes, whether he wanted it to or not. It was too great a strength and all he could do was behold.

They explored a while longer, a bit deeper into the cave. He was content to just poke around and sniff about, at least until deciding he had seen enough, and inevitably until separate paths pulled their routes away from this curious cave. Antares would remember, for to him, it was time well spent even if he never saw the experience's golden acquaintance again. Who knew, though. After this, he would head off towards the south, the plains in mind...
