Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

She had seen her siblings train individually ; and even she had gained some lessons as well. Sometimes they would group, and other times her mother would bring in lessons during plays. She noticed her mother was often in the mixture ; either said nothing, or said a lot, that at times, was hard to take in. But Ara listened, paid attention, for though words were far too much and felt could be said less, they were not without wisdom and teachings. She would partake all that she remembered, as the daredevil grew older. A menance to her siblings, but gradually been chilling out more now that she was able to release from the den.

Ara approached @Hydra and asked, "how to win in fight?" There was more she wanted to ask, but wasn't sure how to properly say. How to sneak attack without being discovered, it was something she was gradually learning butt hasn't properly managed to do it.. Or how to knock another down successfully, like when she fought her sister — they were at a stalemate and it frustrated Ara, that the other wouldn't go down. In the end ; she wanted to win.

In a brief moment of downtime, as the matriarch returned to the rendezvous she settled nearby the bison skull that had been provided to her family. By and by she claimed it mostly as her own, though she let her cubs have at it too when she was not actively guarding it in a lesson to teach them when they could and could not take. It was in this way they would come to learn social cues, and they would understand when a wolf would relent and when they would not. When it came to eating with the pack, they ate with her and their father still... but the nuances of hierarchy, and body language, they would still learn in the meantime.

As Ara approached her, Hydra's gaze was hard as she possessively gnawed on the item. While not necessarily a teachable moment, Ara would know when not to test her patience and when Hydra was in a better mood for it. In her moment of reprieve, Hydra wanted the skull to herself for the moment. But she did not snap her away, sensing Ara was approaching her for something else.

The question was succinct, and one she could appreciate. Lifting her head away from the skull, Hydra drawled, “winning is never a guarantee, and to think as much is how the complacent and arrogant often lose,” in her low voice. Hydra thought her daughter neither of those things, but would not see her become them. “To fight well takes practice. What it takes to win takes more than merely that. What are you fighting for?” she asked, the question rhetorical, “what is the weather? What is the state of your opponent? What is your own state? Are you distracted?” she hummed, watching Ara while placing a hefty paw upon the skull. I am not, the gesture said as her gaze twinkled.

“Tell me how you think you can win,” she asked then, interested. She sensed her daughter understood it was not a guarantee to ask, but what could Ara imagine? Devise?

Her mother had the horrible habit of speaking a lot, it was the one annoyance she held to her respected parent that Ara would not dare to speak out loud. All the words though, held some sort of wisdom and teachings to give, but one had to listen carefully or else they'd miss it. When she was younger it took time to comprehend and catch upon them, as they would get lessons of hunting, fighting, and simply of life itself — it brought a wonder if she was just slow, for her siblings hadn't mentioned any issues and they too, were relatively talkative ; at least half of them, anyway. There was like a divide toward the shy and the bold, the unspeaking and the talkers, and she was with the bold, but unspeaking. Words to be used carefully and concisely.

"Watch and devise a plan..?" She said in question, for that's how it felt. She went into action without a thought, and was caught off guard by her siblings — Ara was petty, she didn't forget them and their actions.

Ara frowned as she listened in thought; what stood out especially was 'what was she fighting for.' As.. She didn't have anything to really fight for. The young devil wanted to be ontop, to reign supreme but it wasn't a real reason, she just wanted to be dominate and powerful, as the two respected figured in her life presented as well. Yearned to be like them, and yet was so far away from doing either. When she wrestled her siblings, she..

"I want to be strong and revered like you."

Ara had heard someone mention 'revered' and it struck to; someone to respect and admire, as all wolves seem to the Alphas itself. A loyalty, and wondered if other packs were like so. But.. Maybe that's what she fought for.

Hydra listened with ample interest, wondering how it was her daughter thought winning might be achieved. An ear twitched as her daughter responded, and Hydra waited for her to finish speaking altogether before responding. Hydra imagined then she understood why it was her daughter had asked the question, and that it was not for external opponents then. Perhaps to gain the upper hand among her siblings. Hydra did not fault her that; they were still figuring out their own hierarchy.

“Beforehand, that can help, if you are able to,” she drawled, “but it is best to not rely on that plan; engaged in any fight, things can change, and quickly. For the better, and for the worse,” the matriarch forewarned. “Never presume victory, even when it feels guaranteed. The fight is not done until it your opponent has submitted, verbalizing it or physically. That is if we are speaking to a spar, or a rank scuffle.”

As for the rest, “let us train. You can become strong. Respect is earned,” she drawled, “I was not born revered. It took time to gain this, but it is something that must be gained through actions, not words,” she informed. “You can watch to see the ways in which this is accomplished, too,” she hummed.

“Come with me,” the matriarch drawled, leaving the bison skull and moving to collect that of a young wolverines. The smaller skull in tow, Hydra turned to lead the way to train her daughter on a stretch of land that descended and wound down on a more gentle trail, albeit with plenty of obstacles for good measure. Hydra was mindful of her daughters still-smaller build, though did push the pace in an effort to warm the girls muscles up for what would come next.

She listened to her mother, staring and pondering through her words. She did always assume it was her win, especially over her siblings. Ara was known as that devil amongst them all, a bit too vicious on trying to reign through and at times they would come together to overpower her. She would grow bored, especially when not many would play back to how she wanted — growing even more devilish as days go by with pent up energy. Her brothers were.. Sneaky bastards, if she could put words to it, vaguely remembering the swearing of a nearby pack member. Her sisters were rather a lackluster for the meanwhile.

When she was getting too much, her parents would stop her fighting with the rest. Though of course, she was always left displeased. Ara was more determined if she lost against them, like Scorpius and Raiden, who managed to land a low-blow in moments of thought and she still hadn't gotten that revenge yet. With so she would grow even more determined. .. Maybe patience was better to be learned, as she grew, the small black wolf was growing with an impatient trait.

Then she nodded, a small wag and a tilted head of curiosity on what 'training' her mother would do, as Ara followed behind in a quick pace.
