Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

set the morning after this thread:  https://canismajor-rpg.com/showthread.php?tid=2962  open to all, but the focus will be on those who did not complete the challenge the previous day.

Another day had passed and the strong had been fed, and the weak went hungry.  Nothing changed besides the day and the growing ache in the stomachs of those to weak or to scared to try.

Fear had to be addressed in all he would tutor, and he would make ne exceptions, even for those of royal blood.

Once again the guard sat with a fresh rabbit on the other side of the log that spanned the dried out river bed. They should be more motivated now.

Mother brought them back — but only herself and @Aldritch. The rest feasted for the night while the two remained hungry, and when they would try to take a prize they would be torn away, and denied such entry to the food. A jealous look was given to the rest of the litter as Vermillion cried, she was so hungry and yet.. Was told would finally get a feast if only, she passed this other night. Her stomach twisted and turned with a great hunger, she could hear it rumble and her mother as well looking.

Though she was rather quick to dash before the Queen even properly brought them there, as the ruby-eyed child started to scramble upon the log.

She left the rest behind, but did not deny if they wanted to follow. For there was only two that did not manage to do their training, and that was in particular.. Her weakest of the bunch, her small unholy son, and stained daughter. Ironic, the two that were glossed with a gray were the ones that were whisked away back to Remus. They did not eat, even with protest, but she had promised them a feast afterwards if they succeeded — though most likely unheard with their grumbling stomachs.

Celnes brought them back, though Vermillion went with a running start once the smell of fresh prey was within the air.. Perhaps the hunger would truly make them but a bit more courageous.

The boy was beyond hungry. The aches in his belly haunted him all night but now as the sun rose and once more they were given no food but brought to face that same man, the same trial as before - he wouldn't move. The aches had gone dull, easier to ignore now as though his own body was defeated by his headstrong attitude over it all. He would not bend to the will of this man and his cruel way of training.

And he was furious with their mother.

Letting such a barbaric "training" as they call it happen to her children who were so young still, still learning their footing and who to trust in this world. With a disgusted look shot at both the queen and her so-called "guard", Aldritch turned to walk the other way. Distancing himself from this inhumane way of training the royal blood.

He was having none of it. And would have none of it. Shit, he would rather find some unknown berries to eat instead of the stupid little rabbit the man guarded at the end of the log. He would not be broken again. He would not cry or beg but walk away from it all with his head held high.

In his hunger, he found internal strength.

Their mother had brought them back hungry it seemed.  This was good, now they should be more motivated.  Eventually all creatures would bend to the furnace of hunger and even the most stubborn could typically be motivated this way; save for a few either to headstrong or stupid to cooperate.

As soon as Vermillion made it onto the log, Remus hopped down into the pit.  As she began her balancing act, the hardened warrior gently nuzzled up at the girl with his muzzle, attempting to reassure her.  If she would stumble then he would prop her back up.  Not all where motivated in the same way, some needed just a bit more reassurance.  "Now you see, you don't need me here... You are doing this all on your own.  In your heart you have everything you need."

During this Remus, shifted a sideways glance at @Aldritch.  It wasn't really all that much to ask to walk across a log, life would be much harsher than this.  Though if the pup wanted to be a special case than so be it.  The old dog still had a few tricks left, he would deal with him soon.

She looked at the warrior with a puzzlement, but also a slight joy coming to her face. Encouragement was something Vermillion needed as she was struggling through the log, her paws slipping between and gradually crawling through.. Her stomach rumbled, and drool dripped to the floor before her as she looked with a ruby-gaze in a hunger. A tail wagged slightly, and even her mother, from the distance, had a rather surprised look before falling to a more neutral stare.

She continued onward, with the sanctuary of knowing if though she had fallen the guard would prop her pack up. She even looked back to her mother in proudness, but slunkered back to focus upon her nod.. Vermillion was so close, she could taste the smell.

"See what you have found! All along you had it within you! As you grow stronger, so will your deeds, fear should not drive you!" Remus walked along her side proudly, not touching the child allowing her to do this in her own, nearing the end, but still attentive to break her fall if need be.

This log was only a petty obstacle to instill a lesson on the nature of fear and reward. In life these pups would face far greater than this. But, as their mindset grew so would their fame and accomplishments.

"Go Vermillion, take what is yours."

She doesn't remember, getting that boost of reassurance. Her mother often smiled at her, though rarely would say something, nor' words of encouragement. The best she could hear was the assurance of licking, or that as heirs to the throne, as Déorwines — ! They are naturally noble and proud. Yet, the Queen was a new mother, and knew not how to build confidence up for her children. Most of them all already had been built with that, and yet Vermillion continued to lack, as she felt shortcomings compared to her siblings.

It felt soaring when someone prompted her to go, and when she felt her paws upon the grass, Vermillion didn't hesitate moving, going forward to the well-deserved prized. Yet, she hesitated, a prompted look over toward her brother who sulked to the ground, and yet did not feast.

The old bastard was cheering his pathetic sister on in the distance while Aldritch, well, he was on his way back to their den. He wouldn't even flicker an ear in their direction as he wandered away, unstopped by anyone. He would eat a bug if he had to should h be hungry enough, nothing would have him listen to his mother's aid and crossing that stupid log.

Exit Aldritch!

Remus too looked at Aldrich: proud, stubborn and spoiled.  Though, he did appear to be spirited.  Remus didn't believe in lost causes, he only needed the proper approach.   "Hmm...", he pondered. letting the boy go.   Another day, the boy would need special attention.

At least he had success with one today, Vermillion did very well.
