Rannoch was becoming more familiar with the territory that Uriel had found. He didn't want to get his hopes up, but it seemed like they had come across an ideal area to settle. He didn't smell any tigers here, or any other predators for that matter, but he still searched thoroughly just in case they did find somebody who had claimed the glade.
He searched alone today in the tall grasses along the land's borders, with no intention of warding away any visitors. But, of course, this wasn't their claim yet, and even still, Rannoch wasn't sure if he would turn anybody away. They were a peaceful bunch and welcomed new members.
A strange smell caught Rannoch off guard, and he stopped and thrust his face towards the ground. He flared his nostrils and sniffed, willing the scent's particles into his nose. It was sour, and he recoiled with his expression skewed.
Somewhere nearby, there was a rotting rabbit that was partially eaten. Whatever predator had caught it had left most of its remains. Rannoch had been fortunate enough so far, as he hadn't come across any spoiled food since waking up, but the smell kick-started a part of his memory that he had forgotten—this was death's fragrance.
Lifting his head, he frowned and began to look around, searching for the deceased animal.
