Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

A man with a familiar scent was lingering around the island, and it was not the cousins of @Kei. Rather it reminded her of the camel man that she so lost long ago, someone who was following her after but a pure coincidence of fate. Though she could be wrong, but for Vendrussel, she needed to know whether it was a friend or foe lingering to the isle.

[sfont=El Messiri]”Venny” the woman in black called her, Vendrussel the pack that he had chosen to follow since his awakening, the woman he had tried to find along the coast where he was rooted to for so long - had she finally come to the shores as well with him? Was that why he was here? To wait for his pack to come and find him after all?

And there she was. Bi-coloured eyes, gold and blue watching her approach from the distance. Her lighter coat signature that she was different than the other dark coated woman, more blue - like the stormy seas. Ah - perhaps this was home after all. The man remained quiet for now, seeing if she would say something first.[/sfont]

She had wondered where the man had gone off to, had he bested her to the coast? "Wolf?" she so called out to the white man, who stared at her with his bicolored look. Though the question truly was, how long had he been on this island and hadn't come to her directly, and if anyone else had met? Sometimes Vendrussel would mention to Kei about the offhand members that were wandering, though pledged that they may be, one was wandering at the beaches, and the other, who was lost, now had shown himself.

She approached with a raised brow, a silence between as it demanded answers, on why he was here, and where had he gone?

[sfont=El Messiri]Frankly he didn't know why he was here, or where he was really. From the dry desert to the wet beaches of the sea, now north from there of where he had found himself originally. It was strange, but it all seemed to build up to the eventual reunion to the wolf he had met before. On his "birth day" as some would call it he supposed.

“Yes.” Simple as always. No long winded explanations as to what happened, no long, sorrowful apologies that would come off as insincere. “I wound up here, and waited for my pack to come.” His "pack" as in her, the one he had said he would follow just ti go "poof" elsewhere half way across the map (and not bc someone made a thread for Noki and Noki didn't ask for it to be moved closer).

Silence regained its position between them, his expression although mostly dull - expressed some kind of gratitude. Gratitude that he waited in the right spot, and that eventually they were reunited just as he hoped.[/sfont]

She couldn't help but be surprised. The man after all, was once beside her within the endless desert before disappearing to no where. She of course, held concerns, and yet they were so new to each other she had wondered if he simply found a place elsewhere. It was a shame, when she first thought of it, that the first companion gained was but lost away. Though Vendrussel would never be aware his mysterious disappearance was a sudden departure to the ocean, where she was still eons away.

As her dream had come ; eventually the northern dragon moved on in thoughts, and gained even more companions.

Yet the man once said something like they were destined together, that wolves were to be a form together. She didn't form such a thought just yet during that time, and rather was waving her way through but endless wandering. Though now, it was obvious by her newly claim and scent of others, the tides have changed, and she was an Alpha. The woman looked upon him with a dubious gaze, before turning to but a small smile.

"Follow me," she said, diving into the waters.

The shadow had lingered along the rocks, her pelt binding her to the island shores as she patrolled the outer reaches, not that there was any threat. Venny spoke of those who lingered at a distance, though she had barely seen the faces of other wolves. A blotch on the rocks would catch her attention though. A man of white with wide scarring that crossed his face. There was no mistaking it, he was the nameless wolf from before.

His presence went unaddressed when she first found him. Their first encounter happened on another shore much further south, yet even then he spoke of Venny. She had no doubt that he was one of the nameless faces her friend had spoken of, but she had no interest in approaching him again either. Not yet. Instead, she lingered from a raised perch, the golds of her eyes the only distinguishing feature against the inky stone.

Vendrussel would approach him before she was noticed, though the words they exchanged led to the storm kissed diving into the salty brine of the sea. Undoubtedly he would follow, and the black dragon had an idea of just where they might be going. Taking her own path, she would stick to the mainland, but climb higher for a better view.

They didn't speak much - for the best. He wasn't the best at idle chit chat. His mind and memories were still fuzzy, lacking anything but a wandering soul within his body. Nameless, story-less. He did what felt natural, follow the path laid out before him to follow without question.

And a new path would be laid out for him. To follow the sea-woman as she entered the watery depths, beckoning him to follow without much more instructions than to walk in her path. The shadow, the shape of the dark woman watching at a distance would go unnoticed. Not for the sake that he didn't care, instead he was simply focussed on the woman he had sought after they had so confusingly lost themselves along the way.

So he followed. Without a word, or second thought. Wherever she went, so did he. Maybe this was a way to unlock who he was, more than just wolf.

A shadow that she was ; a black dragon peaking from the afar on her perch. Perhaps she knew what Vendrussel was to do. As all who come to the claim, will always end in the same fate. For what was not a bond then all dive to the depths below, and in trust to survive - to risk one's own life to be beside the dragons of the northern coasts. She smiled at such a thought, of a man who always kept such a stoic look, how will he react to his own downfall?

As she swam through the waters, occasionally appearing back.. Within the depths of the water he swam, a sore thumb from the blackened ocean as he was that of pure white. Maybe the man suited that of the desert more, and yet his single blue eye looked like that of the purest glacier waters. She only gazed back once, before already had they reached the ends of so, and onto the large spire, where the torii stood ontop.

When she climbed upwards, she expected him to follow to the peaks, and only commented, "Interesting, is it not? This is part of the Dragonford claim," she said, peering below the edge.

Not a single thought went through his head as he fought the waves to keep up with the darker woman as they swam through the salty waters to the island he could see just up ahead. He paddled with powerful legs, stretching his neck up and out of the water in order to keep his nostrils clear of water.

Soon enough he could feel ground beneath his beating paws as toes sought a more solid grasp of the ground. The man was able to walk along the shores and quickly shook off his coat as soon as the cool autumn air could be felt all around him once more. He'd follow her up to the peak, looking over and out as she did while a single ear turned to catch her words again.

“It looks just like any other ledge to me.” He'd say flatly, not quite certain what she saw and he could not.

"This ledge is special, how else could you be one of us without partaking in the experience we all have to go through?" To let one jump themselves was to give the loyalty they trusted within the Dragonford. Though with someone like the wolf, who already was pledged to her so ; what else could there be in asking? What was the fun in so? Though the point of the drop was to trust Vendrussel, she couldn't help but just get very close to him. A sly-like grin while staring at the more stoic man before..

Nudging him off.

Experience that they all had to go through? What in the world did she mean by that? To watch the wakes lick the stone from below on their perch? Was he supposed to see something down there that he just couldn't fathom? A long, hard squint was offered to the white-tipped wakes that sent patterns to the rough waters below.

Eventually, something did stir within him. He couldn't see anything, but something felt as though it was tugging at his chest. Beckoning the man to come and see what lies beneath the waves. It didn't take much for him to follow, the gentle nudge of Vendrussel had sent him over the edge as if he wanted to see what was calling out to him.

Down he plunged, into the water with a vicious slap of his back against the wakes. It would leave a mark, but none that bothered him too much as something had awoken in him. Bubbles rose from his chest and into the shifting waters that snuffed them out, emptying his lungs as though to purge whatever was weighing him down for the past month or so... or however long he had emerged from the camel back in the desert.

Aarkron.

It whispered in his ears. The name growing louder until it was deafening. Muscular legs pushed against the waves and undertow until a fresh breath filled his lungs before unconsciousness could take. Without a word he paddled back to shore once more, bits and pieces of something being slowly drip-fed to him with each stroke.

"For us here, within the land of Dragonford.. Trust between us is upmost - to gives ones life for the ford, to trust by diving to the depths, and the courage to do so, and live with us." As she watched him before the cliff, his white figure dipping into depths below. Though she watched the struggle, the waves rippling so, the man did not drown, nor' require her help. It would've been a true shame if she had to turn away the already claimed man, for someone who said he would join her so.. Yet the Gods took pity, and let him survive.

He seemed in a daze as she watched his figure climb onto the land, welcoming so, "welcome to the ford, sand dragon," she so said, a faint familiarity from his time in the desert, "you are one of us."

“Trust” is what she said before he plummeted. Hearing the words faintly before they faded in the distance of which he fell. He couldn’t catch everything she said and wasn’t certain if it mattered or not.

And such thoughts were quickly forgotten as other thoughts infiltrated his once empty mind. Filling it with a flood of new information, of emotions and memories he thought were long gone.

Pulling himself out of the water, pushed by the wakes that shoved his back and pulled at his feet. He didn’t shake off the excess water and weight just yet, just letting it all sink in through his fur and thoughts trying to make sense of it all. Like a 1,000 piece puzzle, the larger image would come in time with plenty of patience and tenacity.

It didn’t take long for Vendrussel to join him on the beach. His head eventually found its proper place above his shoulders in a proud stance. “Sand dragon” she called him, one of them - as if he wasn’t already with his previous vow to be a part of her pack… which had now grown without him noticing much.

“Aarkron —” He paused, as though tasting the name on his own tongue for the first time. “My name… is Aarkron.”

He pulled out of the water, a man looking as if he was contemplating by no attempt of removing the heavy water — though she could tell for certain as his face remained neutral. Curiously looking at his stae, mindlessly there and awaiting for what words to say. He joined the ford and was dubbed as the dragon of sand, just as she first met in the dunes of the east. A silence hanging between, and she was to prod him what was the matter though he spoke — a name unlike she heard.

Her lips curled slightly, as blue eyes gazed upon him, "Aarkon, welcome to the ford," she so said, not realizing the man already counted himself as part of them.. Though Vendrussel does not think any is part of them until they take the dive.
