Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

An Astra sighting thread! I figured we could each post once and use it as a formation thread in the future!

Long had he believed in the gods, in the call of the wilds and the hjartasöng that thrummed so strongly, so deeply within his chest. The man of golds and creams had ever been sure of their place here, of their draw to this peak, of the rightness that he felt here with each day that passed.

Tonight solidified every belief he had ever had in the unseen, in the deities that watched from both above and below, and that they had found their rightful place here in this world.

High above their forested peak, Stjornuati watched the godly creature made of stars and galaxies dance and play among the Norðurljós, childish wonderment filling his dark eyes with excitement, a grin plain on his maw as his head craned back to watch the breathtaking spectacle.

An ear flickered as an acknowledgment to the wolf that approached him as he sat upon the ridge of the mountain, a single glance backwards telling him exactly who it was. His nose tipped to the stars, indicating the spectral, star-filled deity to his companion before his voice lifted to hail to the rest of them, calling for them to look to the stars, to look to the Dawn of the North and to see the blessing that was bestowed upon them, and upon their claim to this land.

^^Although it was strange for the Sidereal Queen - a princess she had ceased to be some years ago - she found that being with a group again was more natural for her. She longed for Winterheart of her youth and felt that she'd left it in capable, nurturing hands. It wasn't hers anymore. The forest had always told her what it needed and she wasn't it now. And thus, to the cold she had returned. The Ostara was mystified by the view she'd been given, bright eyes peeled to the sky until she had climbed further to find an even more impressive sight.

For what she had known so far of Stjörnuáti, she hadn't known him to be completely taken by fancy. Here, beneath the brilliance of the sky, he seemed almost childlike and innocent and it brought a smile to her face to watch him for a moment. The flick of his ear told her she'd been noticed. She'd stopped relying on stealth so long ago it was worth rediscovering now.

She smiled lightly as she approached and when she settled next to him she nibbled a bit of mess from his scruff. They didn't need words right then - just two beings enjoying the delights of an ethereal night. The display above was breathtakingly beautiful, and as it always had, made her heart incredibly full to watch the beauty before her.

She thought for a moment she recognized that form. It's slyph like manners, it's weaving movements. She imagined her mother, bathed in the otherworldly lights, and swallowed thickly. It was no less beautiful for the message but she took it as a blessing, not just to their hold, but, to the path she had placed herself on.^^

— Salene speaks a tongue she learned in “the North” with common roots in Old Norse no disrespect is intended as I brutalize the language.

That night, the sky was a great sea of fantastic spectacle. The wolves upon the mountain, ever sleepless in the night, found their calls had been answered by the heavens herself. It was Valmúa's steel gaze that sought the spectacular stjarnaúlfur, watching as it danced in sweeping waves over this strange place.
The fire woman heard her brother's voice call out, and with almost a sense of urgency she answered back to him. From the sound, she could tell the distance could be closed quickly. She moved with predatory grace, seeking assembly with her kin to celebrate the visit from the gods. Slinking through the night, her red fur was a flash that scattered a number of hidden vermin, whom she had not the time to dismember. It was upon Stjörnuáti's outlook she strode. A hazy green light from the aurora flooded her irides as she mouthed the ear and cheek of her pallid brother.
At Salene, too, she shifted her body to rub her scent across her, though the women did not know one another well. Her smell was familiar, and this was all that mattered under the gaze of the new deity. She said nothing, for though she wished she knew the name of it, Valmúa wished only to listen to the night in its infinite glory.

She would have ignored the call if it wasn't for the strange movement in the sky. Drawn by not only the call now that something had piqued her interest - but with her eyes gazing above. Awestruck with the strange occurrence as well as cautious as to what it could possibly all mean. Was this the end? Was this a sign for good or terrible fortune to come?

Up the path to where one of the men had called them - Thalia's eyes swept the gathering with one new woman as well as Valmúa by Stjör's side. A pause to glance at the dancing figure, tail nervously swaying as she contemplated what to do. They all seemed in awe at the sight and so eventually she swallowed before striding forward.

For the sake of keeping face she would keep her head up, tail proudly curled despite the lack of rank, and offer a quick fanged jab at the pale man's side before naturally ignoring the woman. She meant nothing to the dragon, did nothing for her other than possibly being one of the men's whores, one they want to own - and instead focussed on brushing up on Valmúa to announce her presence, taking a seat just off to her side before blue eyes sought the strange figure moving in the sky.

Whatever this meant, at least she wasn't doomed to deal with it alone. At least this time she could appreciate being among this ragtag group.
