Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

From a distance one could see the large mountains hanging in a serene painting ; she knew she was getting closer to a more forested area, but generally took her sweet time on enjoying the new adventure of what was in front. She found herself wandering into a meadow, it smelled heavily like a deer herd, but she thought nothing of it. Many herds would take certain areas, but she thought it was interesting they took such an.. Open, land, where wolves can easily decide to take them.

Vendrussel could hear her stomach rumble at the familiar taste of caribou, and while she wanted to, in reality hunting one was far harder then it was alone. If only @Aarkron didn't disappear, yet he wandered off, not to be seen again. It was a worry to what happened, but their fate was so short, she wandered if perhaps he went to find a herd of camels by himself. Another part of her was the reason she stayed to the desert so long, seeing if his presence would return..

Though it never did, and now the dragon stood amongst the flowers of the plains.

No longer laden with fawns, the doe could move. Her two had been left in the shade of a tree while she went out to graze, as was the way. Groomed clean and scentless, as the way of the doe, she went on her way, into the field. @Rajah was near, somewhere, with @Coronet and @Foxglove near him most likely. She could smell them strongly though her eyes were on the end of the field.

Where now, there was a wolf.

She eyed it warily, standing alert with ears flicking. She was not one to begin fights unnecessarily with a predator but the thing needed to know that she was aware of its presence and that she was not like the deer of the forests that fled into the mist at the first sight of a predator. Still, her prey-instinct kicked inside her and her eyes trailed over the rest of the meadow, eyes tracing for the distant shapes of any other wolves.

She lifted her maw, opening her mouth and letting out a low bellow that was warped in the tongue of wolves. “This will not be your hunting ground.”

Long ago did her kind cause a terror to forests ; they held no care for the overhunting, or the destruction of the floral life. The dragons of the northern region were menances, they lived like barbarians without a care except to those who were with them.. With so, it caused a few clashes with other packs, until finally, harmony had taken, and they learned better. So the story was told to Vendrussel, and the renewal of one of the ancients - Chiapeony, the live giver. The dragon of nature itself, because of her, and the disruption of another pack teaching them the right ways, they held more respect to nature.

But it didn't mean Vendrussel liked being told what to do, by a deer, "Who will stop me?" who was also alone. A single velvet female..

She didn't even have the intention to hunt, but now she definitely wanted to. Her slight anger and pettiness overcame the surprise of prey actually speaking the tongue. She knew that once long ago, dragons had done the same, and it was said if tried enough, all species could learn the same tongue. That didn't mean though, Vendrussel actually met one who spoke.

The wolf appeared angered by her statement, her claim.

How foolish, wolves were. They believed simply because they had teeth and herds, they could claim every spot of land and shove their weights around? Wolves could not control all, could not be trusted to control all. They were the deviants, the monsters who filled the land with their large litters of dog-fawns, so many fawns that they needed to hide away for months until the little devils could crawl on their own and, eventually, kill on their own.

Deer were smarter. They could run from birth, knew to hide, knew to wash away every scent that might mark a fawn's presence while their mothers grazes.

Fawns could be left without fear of injury or death, while wolf fawns had to be coddled from infancy, freezing if they were left alone for more than a few minutes at a time. She let out a bark, a sound that carried on to her family, if they were near. A wordless warning to her children to remain hidden, for the adults to come stand beside her. For her King to stand at her side. “The Kingdom of Deer.” She did not wish to tell this strange predator much of her kin but she could not allow wolves to settle here.

A wolf herd claiming this land would be certain death for her herd. “There are easier prey for a lone wolf southwards. Rabbits, grouse. Feast on them, not my kin, - you and I shall have peace.” They did not need the protection of wolves like the does that grew fat in the forest, for despite the savage teeth of a wolf, a deer was not harmless.

Despite being just a doe with no antlers, she had hooves that could pierce, could concentrate her weight and crush. Forelimbs to strike, even hind legs to kick if she was pursued. She did not want to fight, but to protect her family? If there was no other choice, she would.

Foxglove lay in a hollow in the side of a hill. Here she was relatively well hidden while she rested. Flowers and brush lay across her back, shielding her slight form from prying eyes. In this hidden state, she ruminated with eyes half closed and practically purring with the taste of the berries she had browsed earlier. It was lovely here, a deer's dream with the fruits that lay everywhere for them to eat. It was a home worth fighting for.

And that was why she heeded the call.

The young doe might have hidden away and not come out if the herd was larger but as it was, they were few and far between. It was safer in a herd where she could hide and get away from wolves with her fellow members being a shield but now they were too new. Now she would have to stand firm with her herdmates until there were more to help them along.

Foxglove could feel the fear in her gut at the call... She hoped the king would be there already. The blessed lord of the herd. However, there was no banking on that, no banking on if she would need more deer at her beck and call. More bodies meant more chance for success. Even if that body was small.

The doe swallowed her cud and headed towards her queen. No matter what rank the woman took, she would always be a queen to the brown ruminant. She came up alongside the darker doe, there was a smile on her face but her eyes were keen as she eyed the blue beast. Disgusting. She thought wolves were terrors, horrible creatures. always frothing and ready for their next meal. Still, despite those innermost thoughts she came up to show her support. The herd needed her now, she could not afford to stand aside while one member was torn asunder. It would compromise everything.

"Good day! How are you, Miss Wolf, Your Grace?" She asked in a cheery tone, quite jovial as if they were all friends here. Maybe her tone would throw the beast off-guard. Despite the fact that it was two-on-one --she hoped-- if she could disarm the blue terror then things might turn out for the better.

'Kingdom of Deer,' brought a rather laughable smile look to the wolf's face. She thought perhaps deer held some sort of naming to their herd like their own, but it was in fact rather funny that she thought the name of prey would rival to some fear. Though alone she may not be able to truly hunt down, maybe not a stag that is, but the other was but a doe in the wake. She may have offered the temptations of other prey, but how tempting it was to simply take her down then, and there? Vendrussel held confidence she could fight, as per' a wolf has always done..

Though when another approached, a tactical change, "threatening a wolf is not ideal," the blue woman warned, a smile softening with an edge, "for when there is one, there is more." Obviously so, despite the fascination of the group who spoke of wolves, she did not desire to stay within a land that threatened so.

But there was a day she'd be back with a hunger.

She watched, stiff, as the canine returned statements of peace with claims of threats. “Do all wolves think only with their teeth?” she wondered aloud to Foxglove, anger thrumming in her chest. “They think they own everything, damn them.” There were more and more wolves every day and the deer populations could not keep up, could not survive if this happened. She wondered back to the herd in the woodland where claims of peace with wolves were sung out of lips of a woman dulled with passiveness.

No, she and her kind would never be cowed like that, never bend to wolves.

“Farewell, lone wolf,” she called to the receding tail of the hound, wondering if she spoke true. “Do you believe she will return with more? Such fickle things, predators. They hold grudges.” They would need to tell Rajah before their herd was threatened by a true danger. “Perhaps she will run into the mare of the southern fields and will be dispatched with a kick.”

She had met a mare as they traveled and she wondered of her, whether she was still well and roaming with her herd or if she was seeking greener pastures, as it were.
