Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

It had been some time since they moved, and Miriam was slowly growing more and more distant on exploration. She held a desire to move further away, perhaps northern as other directions had been.. Tricky, to say the least. Though now with her daughter, @Liliana, amongst their mixture, she didn't go too much. If she ever had a distance many times did the woman trust her daughter with the two, one being rather disgruntled..

But she didn't expect them to do anything, just not let her wander too far. Knowing that wasn't the best on being a mother though she only did that during cases of needing ahem, a bit of privacy. Otherwise often, her daughter would be forcibly brought along. Today, she wisped the girl off to a land without trees, but moss, grass and even stone.

She could see there was berries in rather spikey bushes, and warned the girl to not attempt without her as the girl wandered off.. Then she too try the same, her paw being pricked.

For a summertime spent in the plains, he had rarely ventured this far to its northern reaches. Daydream had found plenty to fill his belly with elsewhere, usually grazing in the lush fields, or trailing other bands of horses he could spot to harass. Arriving there within the reaches of the tumultuous rest and finding little of noteworthy interest to show for it swiftly proved to him why he had not bothered.

But, already out here, he tried to scope it out somewhat despite an instinct that was beginning to push him away. He did not smell any other equine types, not freshly and no wonder; the ground underfoot was annoying more often than it was not and grass was sparse--paling in comparison to the grassy valleys none too far from here. He found he had to watch where he was going, and kept his ears tipped up tall. At least enough of a gentle breeze kept the biting insects at bay, somewhat, but he was already eager to return to proper shade again soon.

While he picked his way along, he spied some type of motion, grayscale, and it revealed itself as wolf. Knowing that he had likely been seen by now in this relative openness, Daydream stopped, arced his neck, and snorted in the direction of the unfamiliar canine. The distance between them was enough to keep him on the bold side of things, though being only one to his name. He never trusted that their sorts were ever truly alone, hence his mistrust in seeing one by herself.

that wasn’t necessarily correct, daydream would soon realize. miriam had brought along her daughter who trailed closely behind, if only occasionally within sight. her presence was easy to miss; she was small and quiet, speaking often but mostly to herself. it made sense that she would go so easily unnoticed.

there was a playful energy around them this day. lily nipped at her mother’s ankles, giggling as she galloped out of reach, then returning to repeat the cycle. how she wished for a playmate! asmoses was still nothing more than a faint ache, a wound persistent and painful when noticed.

she was preparing for another attack when she heard the strange sound and looked up, noticing an even stranger creature. “amma”, liliana whined, “what’s that?” instinct corralled her around to miriam’s hindquarters where she could feel safe.

Miriam adored nothing else seeing her daughter be happy - no longer remembering what once was. She would laugh and giggle upon playing with her so, nothing short of a bonding between the two. It was a shame there was no children to be found of the same age, and the hope that maybe if any packs that group comes across, she could make at least a few friends with any offspring. Though but a fleeting wish, thinking of the dark, shadowey woman who chased her off with warning snaps.

"That is a horse.. They are very fast, but can be very dangerous. You never want to get close to one unless they give you permission." Though her daughter was growing, it was easier to probably explain what it what, and what is dangerous. They stayed back from the horse, who seemed slightly ruffled. A paw in front, warning to not get closer..

Their kicks were dangerous.

Ah, of course. Daydream's eyes widened when another wolf appeared. Younger, and easier to shield from view by low growths, but now he could watch both of them better, at least. They seemed to be a matching pair, if their appearances and smell were any indication. He could draw his conclusions from there. While no part of him preferred to be outnumbered, the canines seemed to want to keep an eye on him as well, but he still had to wonder how far away more of them were. Surely, this was not it.

Appreciating some measure of distance between them, he didn't close it yet. He swished his tail idly, nostrils flared wide. Wolf,” he drawled in his low croon, half a nicker as his nose tipped to each of them in turn. A greeting, because he was interested enough in them for the moment, so long as he could afford to be. “Is this your home?” he asked, unsure if he may be heard just right. Convening with the local predators was not always a guarantee.

“amma”, liliana whispered, “why does it sound like that?” despite speaking the common tongue, this creature wasn’t as easy to understand as other canids. his voice was unique, carrying an accent over his words which lily couldn’t quite decipher.

eventually, she would adjust her ear to understand his kind just as she had with the other creatures, but for now, she was largely dependent on miriam’s interpretation.

"Normally.. If they are not wolf, they cannot speak the same as us. Only very special individuals, can learn our tongue." Miriam whispered as she leaned toward Liliana's ears, before looking back to the horse. Though she had heard rumors of other fauna being able to speak wolf tongue, she of course never personally experienced it. A widened eye, as she looked upon the beast that they were.

A rather guarded stance though, stepping in front of her daughter. They can be gentle, but she also knew them as territorial ; they can be dangerous if angered. Miriam shook her head, "we are currently inhabiting near the large lake."

Call him bold, or willfully-ignorant, but he had learned enough to toe a very specific line with local dogs--a tradition practiced young enough, and carried forward to today. It still kept him careful, borderline cautious, though this was not the air he would project. Too tall for that, too far above. Very pointedly not prey to the mother and daughter. If they began to look like they would try to start anything suspicious, his hooves could help finish it one way or another.

They were being careful too, especially the one that took point. But he had not lost them yet. The stallion gave his mane a shake, then arced his neck. “Of course,” he breathed, about the lakeside--and noted for next time his thirst grew mighty. “Are there many more?” he assumed, nostrils flaring as he spoke. Meaning could start to blur at any time, so a firm stare down at the grayscale wolves filled the blanks.

informally exiting this thread! she can be referenced as listening nearby.

it seemed strange that this creature could speak their language, even if only as some odd dialect native to his kind. liliana wanted to learn more, but unfortunately could not seem to stay focused long enough to think of any substantial questions. instead, she opted to watch their conversation play out from her hiding place near a large flat stone, completely awe-stricken by this exchange.

"There are some.. Though we don't plan to live there." A side-eye to watching her daughter run off and to play elsewhere, she was but like a blissfull dream of ignorance, and innocent ; something that Miriam would hope the other would continue having. Then she looked back at the horse, a little more hesitant now as the other continued asking questions. She did not see a herd near there nor' smelled, but did not wish to fight but another group of fauna, such as the deer that overpopulated the floral plains.

There are some, his ears flicked, one forward and one back--too trained on the canines to even let the guards down, but while not the worst outcome he could imagine, it was not the best either. Some wolves, then, and he watched the smaller one move off to a new hiding place. Daydream replied first with a small snort. “Travelers? Or.. searching?” he asked gradually enough, trying to understand what she meant exactly if they were not going to live there at the lake.

He, yet a lone agent of stallion bachelorhood, held no claim to mares or their grazing grounds, so he understood the need to cover ground, usually prompted by the seasons, or other enemy herds.. not that he knew why the dogs would need to do it either. It could be anything all the same. This was one of the greatest looks into their lives he had dared to take in quite some time, and this was perhaps all he really needed to know.

"Travelers," Miriam commented, a smile wandering once more near her daughter, "we are wayfarers ; nomads who don't stay in one place." She sometimes surprised herself, how others had joined her within this lifestyle. It was a curiosity how her life enter twined with the two brothers, ghostly in white and stoic as the knights themselves, and with that, anyone would want such paladins to join their pack. And yet they continued staying with her, she sometimes felt a little too spoiled in that sense that not only she kept her daughter, but her lifestyle of wandering. Now with the protection of others as well.. Miriam was generally safe.

She granted him a greater explanation, which he could understand as well as he could hope when it came to a look into the lives the canines led; herds did not always stay in one place, either. He nodded this slow understanding. “Like some herds,” he agreed. The seasons shifted, rivalries changed. Predators loomed. Grass dried up, or got stamped into mud by too many hooves for too long. Any number of things could happen. So, to him, not being tied to one immediate area could have its advantages. Maybe these traveler wolves had learned this, in their own way. Though it would make them more difficult to avoid from a horse's vantage point, not knowing exactly where they would be bedding down for the eve, it was likely for good reason.

But this talk of traveling made him want to find somewhere better than this. The landscape did not offer him enough, he had seen all he needed to see, so it was high time he keep on passing through. “My own travels must continue,” he intoned, deciding that he had heard enough from wolves for today. He gave the larger of the pair another solid dip of his head, and a glance in the direction he had last seen the smaller go, before he began to turn away--then head off into a slow trot.

"Farwell." She dipped her head in the slight respect of the horse, as he left toward where he may be. She wondered where his herd are located, a curiosity what the rest look like as she had seen mustangs in the wild.. But not many with such a variety of color, it brought a wonder to the maidens heart. She called back Liliana though, so that the two may head back to the water hole, and rest for the day. Miriam felt a bit.. Cautious at the moment, being so open, she wanted to return to the rest.
