Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported

As the first calls of birds cried out, Ira found herself already slipping out of the large cavern that made most of Vanderfell's dens. Normally she would have carried slumber-ridden legs to the nearest cache for a quick meal before slipping out to the outer reaches of the territory to patrol, but today her legs carried her further.

The roan queen paid no mind as she left familiar scent marks behind, clambering down the mountain into the forests. She had been out this way once before, but not for long and not far. Now that things had settled into a quiet it was only right that she finished exploring what was left of the range she made her home. Compared to the peaks where she had settled, rock jutted unnaturally here into the sky giving a wall-like appearance, but these walls were thin, like guiding tendrils through woods.

It was a wonder what caused the mountain to rise in such a way. Even as she paused in her tracks to look for the early morning sun, the rock carried higher past the tree tops.

All morning he had been wandering the inner walls of the strange mountains, never roaming too far in as he was cautious to map out its outer spires first. Frankly, Hieronymous wasn't even certain he would venture much deeper than this without a guide or someone with a nose to pick their way back and out by following their previous trail with their nose... or maybe he could try to mark his way through with stones and logs - but that seemed to be a far more exhausting option.

Keeping his eyes open and all other senses on high alert, every now and then he would scare himself by realizing he had wandered too far in accidentally - and this time, as he picked his way back out with cautious choices... “Oh! Good morning High Queen Ira.” The awkwardness he felt about basically being rejected a few days ago had long melted away. Hiero wasn't a man to keep a grudge and hold it close to his chest - that little kiss also helped ease the sting but even that he wouldn't hold too closely to keep his hopes up.

“Have you managed to map out this thing yet? It's pretty intimidating if you ask me.”

The sound of approaching steps caught her attention as she quickly turned her gaze to the paths ahead waiting for what might appear. Much to her surprise though, it was just Hieronymous. Glancing up once more to confirm what time it was, she turned to the painted knight as he questioned her.

No, I only just arrived. You're up rather early to have been exploring already though. What more was interesting was that he of all their wolves was exploring uncharted lands. Sure he had his way of going about daily tasks, but she knew by now it was all routine. With no nose, it seemed dangerous to be a curious mind.

What have you found so far? The rock here seems to form walls. I can only see the ground before me if the path does not turn. Which given that they stood on the side of a mountain, was often. Surely this rock could not stretch all the way though, could it?

“Mmmm couldn't sleep.” Which was unfortunately a regular thing for Hieronymous as of late. A nightmare here, another one there - it was hard to sleep when your mind kept trying to piece it all together and wonder if any, if not all of those very realistic stories your brain conjured up were real or just manifested make-believe from a creative mind. He could only hope the later.

And so what other way to clear a busy mind than to go for a stroll?

“Uhhhh unfortunately not much.” Boy did he wish he had something more to tell her than that“It doesn't seem all that bad out here, but the further I go in the more it seems to change. I hate to say I'm afraid of going any deeper.” Nervously the man chuckled at his own admission. He was bold, curious, but not stupid. For him to vanish in the maze like structure would do no one any good.

She almost seemed surprised by his words though once more, Hieronymous had a handicap unlike those of most wolves. To chart the unknown in a place like this...well it would take more than a hike up a mountain or crossing a river. He needed a nose. Still, she raised a brow to his words. Seems to change? she echoed his response. Surely that was impossible. You likely haven't looked in the right places then. Come.

A wag of her tail was all she need to gesture for the man to follow. She knew well enough even without it that he would come naturally. You say it's like a maze, yes? They would need to name this place eventually. They may as well brainstorm while they passed the time. Padding down the twisted path she would come to a fork, favoring the right's path over the left.

“Yes, I don't know how, maybe it's me but the path always seems different.” But it was easily just him getting turned around as well. It was far too risky for him to really check it out without being too cautious - but now with Ira here, well, they had a chance to try a different way. Without hesitation he followed Ira's lead back into the maze of rock, curious to see if she could figure it out.

They went right, and he wondered if she already had a plan here on how to tackle the obstacles. “I think so. Normally it's fairly easy for me to remember paths, but this is ore daunting.” Before following the High Queen into the right, he took a peek of the path to the left. Maybe this is why he had such a hard time travelling through the maze, curiosity had him scatterbrained at every fork - but at least he had Ira to trail after once he had his fill of a quick look on the other path.

The roan woman flicked an ear behind her as she traveled, catching the painted man's words with ease. Paths simply do not change. We either follow them or fall off. That's why she planned to follow the same walls. It would be impossible to get lost if they only trusted one direction. Turning at any point randomly would just get them lost, and that's the last thing she planned to do. There were too many priorities for her to wader around tall rocks aimlessly.

Pick a path and follow. One way or another you will find its end so long as you do not change course. A lesson that could be said about life as well. They all pathed their own roads, but one wrong decision could derail you from your path. At least most of the time there would be a way to find your way back. Like a nose, or... Scratch the walls at the turns. Nothing specific just enough to track where we have been. Should they find the right path later they could properly mark the walls. A guide that would aid them through the dangers, and out of the maze.

“Do you often travel through mazes?” She seemed rather comfortable where he was not. Prepared with a plan already on the go. Maybe he simply didn't often take the time to test his skills within them, to figure them out and remember a plan to take them on successfully. Being scatter brained and wanting to see everything didn't help either.

“Wouldn't that confuse the next ones to come into the paths? If the walls are filled with markers.” It certainly would confuse him. There was only so much room on the rocks for each traveller to use, in time they would be a mess of claw marks. Hiero wasn't the type to argue however, only voicing his thoughts as already he was digging his sign into a stone near by to mark it with their passage.

No. If she were to be honest, she had just as much of a clue as to how to navigate as Hieronymous did, but she need not voice that lest she brings his rambling concerns.  It's true that if they weren't careful all the walls could be clawed to mess, but she had no intentions of that happening. They didn't need to largely mark the walls and who knows? Maybe having the twisting paths besides their home would protect them.

Of course, there was her own to worry about as well. Those in Vanderfell should not be lost to the maze.  They would need to be instructed how to properly navigate it with time, but perhaps they could stain the walls for paths leading to certain things. Berries grew in the forests at the run, they might be suitable once they had more experience traveling the rocks. The walls are unscathed now, yes? She glanced back to catch his eye, though never slowed her pace.

Others are not our concern right now. Just them. Right now only the two of them would exist, navigating their own little world amongst the trees and rock with the reaches of Vanderfell stretching out behind them.

He supposed this is where they would differ. As Ira thought of the now, Hieronymous thought of the future adventurers who would wander into the maze. How confused they might become with different markers on the walls wandering around in circles. At least now, yes, she was right. They had to focus on themselves and them exploring the mountain side, the rest would come at a later time.

“As you wish~” Either way worked for him, for every piece of wall she wanted to be marked he would do as asked with no further questions. Boy he was also hoping he didn't come off as a complete moron when it came to the art of navigating a maze. How embarrassing would that be to be caught confused by the walls by his Alpha of all wolves in their pack?

At least if he was stuck navigating this thing with anyone, Ira was also the best choice. His eyes would wander to the walls, the path and every so often back onto her. Despite his admission of affection being left somewhat rejected, he couldn't help it. The heart wanted what the heart wanted and it just simply wouldn't stop screaming at him. There were plenty of other pretty ladies he could move on to, and yet, Hieronymous had no interest in any of them.

With that thought, he simply sighed softly to himself. What an idiot he was.

There would be no further questions as they wandered, though that did not mean the painted man did not have his own concerns. He would keep them to himself, however, so they would walk in relative silence aside from the small talk that came up on occasional twists and turns. If Hiero hadn't learned by now he probably would during this time that Ira wasn't always the most talkative. In fact, she could find comfort in the silence or maybe it was just the silence that sat with him.

Each path they took led them deeper into the heart of the maze, some paths rejoining with ways they had once taken. It felt unexplainable at times, but Ira learned to stop trying to question the mountain and just continue their exploration. Eventually, they would have to turn back and give in to the hunger and weariness that would surely take them, though they never found the end there were spots amongst the maze that held their own beauties. Hidden pools, grand trees, and the occasional shelter that seemed to be carved by nature. The wonders seemed unending, though the rest would have to be saved for another time.
