Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

A cool midnight summer breeze swept through the lilac fields of flowers. The weather made it all the more jarring what happened next. As if from nowhere, lightning struck the tallest tree the woodland had. The tree burst ablaze, but the fire never spread further than its roots. Throughout the night, the tree burned to the ground - slowly but surely, until in the morning there was nothing left but a pile of ash.

But that wasn't the only unusual thing about this weather phenomenon, if one could call it that. From that pile of ash pushed the head of a girl. The girl was fast asleep, the rising and falling of her chest the only indicator that she was alive. This movement shifted the ash that covered her, head to toe, enough to disturb her. Her eyelashes, too, were covered and she had to blink a few times to see clearly. Honeycomb eyes looked upon the many butterflies that drunk from the coldly colored flowers, then to the ash that surrounded her. What had happened? Where was she?

They travelled, far and wide as per usual. Eating the scraps they found, pouncing on the small prey they could get their lands on. (Boo feel free to have @Munin join or no!) A great light could be seen at a distance as the small travelling band could see, Caw's eyes caught it in the skies while by the time Crow could see where the light emanated from... it faded into blackness.

By the time they reached the spire of black, soot drifted in the breeze as he sniffed at its feet. It smelled wonderful, burnt... its colour was attractive, black as they were. Even as he pawed at its substance it only felt strange as a cloud of black erupted from his presence. As the two, wolf and corvid played in the soot, covering themselves in the darkness of what the light had left...

Another light came from within. This one was breathing, and the avian took flight to hide in the canid's scruff. The two watched as the golden beauty blossomed from the dark. Blackened eyes watching cautiously from a distance as Crow backed away one paw at a time... What was this? Who was this?. He squinted... watching the strange occurrence.

The way she sat, it made the ash look like a dress then - back turned to her discoverers. But the girl felt their presence, be it by ear or by a sense one only possessed when another was staring at you. She turned to them, gaze blurry and face an extra level of chubby with her maw just slightly ajar.

“Hello?” She greeted unknowingly, a quick glance given to the feet that carried the other wolf, ever so carefully, away from there. She looked then to what had covered her, its scent pungent and clinging to her as well - any trace of her former life covered or erased. She shook her head, eyes closed, to get some of it off her, but the golden girl remained a slightly duller color.

“Hey dude - yeah you - where the heck's this? Ya kidnapped me or something?”

She greeted - and he remained silent. Even Caw on his back didn't utter a single word as they both watched the female shake off the soot that still clung to her bright coat. She was a pretty thing he had to admit, even for someone who didn't seek attention or affection of the fairer sex, Crow saw that she was charming. Pleasing to the eye and plump enough to look healthy and well fed. Perhaps that was enough to catch his eye. The promise of a good hunter of which he could pick off from their leftovers as they travelled in her wake.

“No.” He frowned, croaking the answer simply as his eyes hardened on the girl. How could he kidnap her? They were out the same height and he was leaner than she was. It would take so much work on his part to take her anywhere against her will. Far too much effort as far as he was concerned. A waste of precious energy that he could use to track down some pre-killed food. “This is forest.” Because he had no other idea what to answer her with.

Well, it wasn't really fair to question the logic of someone newly born, now was it? She didn't know him or this place and couldn't remember for the life of her where she'd been before this or what she'd been doing. Wait, did she know anybody at all? She knew she was Nellie, Nellie Blackthorn, but that was about everything. Huh, weird. Unimportant, but weird. No stress.

“I mean, yeah, I can see that.” She answered, looking to the side for a moment as if someone was there with a frown. “But like, do you have names for this forest? Or like, a name for the place that the forest is in? Packs, landmarks - anything?” She asked then, stepping onto wobbly fawn-legs that felt like they hadn't been used in forever. I mean, she was a lazy creature, but she got up for a snack every now and again so she shouldn't be feeling so super duper miserable right now. “Maybe your friend got anything, hm? Hm?” She pressed on, talking now about the awfully silent bird that accompanied the male. Weren't birds supposed to be hella annoying?

He had only said counting... four words. Four words to this girl and she had many more to come. As though he had opened up the flood gates and she continuously had more to say. Was he the only one who was unbothered by this different place? Maybe it was because he never bothered settling down before so being somewhere new felt completely normal to him. As if his every day had not changed at all.

“No, it matters?” It clearly didn't matter to him. As she questioned Caw on his back, Crow tossed an eye over his shoulder to look at the bird and see if he had anything to add. The bird simply gave a fathered shrug, nothing either huh. “Doesn't matter, only food matters.” Classic Crow, thinking only of his and Caw's bellies. Names of things was always so pointless to him. Even names in general did too - only because he didn't really mingle with others of his type.

“What this?” Now was his turn for questions. She came from this stuff so she had to know what it was. The soot on the ground, the stuff that took after his and Caw's colours. Was it edible? With his eyes still on her he lowered his head to take a lick at it, and his face cringed at the bitter taste. If it was indeed edible, it was awful.
