With each seductive step, more snow embedded within the crevices of her leaden paws, but the sharp bite of it was deadened by the heavy armour preserving each pad to endure the plummeting temperatures. Impervious also to the harsh mountainous landscape she found herself marching along as usual.
She was headed south, towards the sculpted razor-like mountains. The unforgiving tiers of rocks adorning its obscure silhouette were the ideal haven for the capra she sought out today. It was mating season, and there were plenty of testosterone fuelled fights to go terribly wrong, but so right for her.
And when her goal was within her sapphire vision, she paused. Watching the drama ensue on the banks of the mountains, the way her prey agilely moved along the sharp angles in fluid motions, it looked nearly impossible, alas she knew it wasn’t, for she was able to manoeuvre just as meticulously. But today, she would outwit them differently, knowing there was no reason to exert herself.
As time passed, she’d already made herself comfortable, by laying down on one of the provided ledges. The feline had acquired her target. A buck was visibly faltering in his fight, with quite a few crimson flesh wounds decorating his flanks where horns of his rival had penetrated the skin. She took this opportunity to get closer. And as if on queue, just as she neared the closing battle, the buck missed a step, and she was there to catch the damsel in distress — naturally…
Her paw was first to make contact, swiping to grip its hind successfully. Its bleating panic inaudible to her as adrenaline deafened her. And just as quickly as the first lunge struck, her other paw swung to claw its other side. Making quick work of the inadequate prey, she threw her head down, plunging those formidable canines into the buck's neck gripping mercilessly, suffocating his wheezing breaths.
With that, she dragged it back up onto the ledge, out of reach of other predators, so she could enjoy her meal peacefully. Maeve then sadistically ripped open its skin and muscles, consuming its still-warm succulent organs.
