Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

Stormborn fam always welcome!

She didn't know where she was going, nor did she much care. If any of her family wanted to they could easily catch up — her rear legs were tense and taut in the cool mountain air. Ynness did little but scowl even as she silently enjoyed her surroundings.

There was something timeless about the place. Ynness saw strangle shaped rocks, carved into deliberate, sharp edges, piled in odd structures melded into the landscape. Many were reclaimed by the land around them, moss and vines growing as if from the rock itself.

Ynness hobbled to one gulch, her head tilted at the strange structure stretched across it. Wood, marked with holes and rot, were laid out in flat planks in front of her, joined by some dried old stems twisted into long ropes and held to each side by beams of wood. Ynness sniffed one of the posts, then tested a plank with her paw, pressing down. It groaned slightly, but held. She took another step forward, then another, then a hop. Still firm. She kept walking, curious to how the place was made in the first place.

"Kid, it seems you wandered into Vanderfells grounds." Orlaith found herself wandering the areas, often swaying between the peaks of the summit and to their hunting round, the Ullarcraig. It was like a switch in territory, for the luxuries that was within the forest did not reach higher. A paradise surely, for the prey that swarmed the area and the greenary that carried everywhere. Even the rocks, that formed in oddity, was covered in vines of décor. Like a God's grace that sculpted the world, yet lost in time.

Then even she, hadn't discovered. Her foot didn't cross further, rather Orlaith stayed at the edge. She was bit to wary to even try to follow the bridge of trees, seemingly so flat that it would snap. She tried trees before and those cannot hold her weight, she couldn't imagine trying so. Though, the fireclad guard couldn't exactly let someone freely enter the territory as they so pleased.

Ynness froze, the sway of the wooden bridge frightening her. The drop wasn't...that high, but with the pain already in her hips, she had no need for more injuries on top of the ones she had. She braced herself as best she could against the swing, feeling her body go along with the bridge's motions. A nervous smile graced her lips as she became attuned to the movements, only for the expression to drop as she beheld the foreign wolf in front of her.

She hadn't heard of any pack around here. That worried her, for she and her family had woken up here and, for what she knew, were intent on staying. Ynness stared at the orange clad woman, unsure of the other's intent. “Alright—” was all she could manage. She shifted her weight and the bridge swayed once more, sending a pang of nausea through her. “Y'all hunt on these things?” she frowned, looking down for a moment before snapping her head back up. Nope. Not doing that.

"Naw, you think you can hunt on that? Best be moving back over here." Orlaith couldn't be too rough on the other, finding that theyre just a child. Though it did bring judgement, that someone was not watching her. Some memories started to slowly drift to the front however, on a child lost as much as this one. In the end she couldn't remember what had happened to them, but only vaguely knew in her heart, that she had brought them back. While she had her moments, she wasn't that cold-hearted to leave someone that young alone.

"Or ya need some help?" Though very much reluctant to step onto the unstable.. Oddly shaped branches. Squinting her focus only then did she notice the rather gruesome injuries on the other. As an adult who been through her fair share of battles, even she never had something as terrible. Orlaith didn't realize how much she was focusing on looking at them.

She followed the instructions, more from her own fear than from the other's words. She stepped backwards — it was hard to with her injury, no matter the ground she stood on. It was with small, unsteady hops rather than sliding backwards steps. She felt her remaining hind paw stumbled on a weak part of the wooden boards. Splinters shattered and crashed down below. Ynness looked down for a moment, then back up, shutting her eyes. No. she said, teeth clenched together. “I can do it!” Each word was a punch, aimed both at herself and the woman. She took another rear hop, tentative as she allowed to be shown.

"If ya sure, i'm waiting." As eyes refocused to the struggling child, Orlaith waited, and watched. She wasn't as parental as others and immediately help, as the fireclad warrior assumed she was like so in her younger days. Though with memories failing, especially upon her childhood, she wasn't too sure what had occurred. As fiesty as she was now, most likely was like the same, 'I can do it.'

"Kinda lookin' like you're struggling without proper.." paw, - her voice trailed off, watching the splintered wood fall off. Orlaith knew to backtrack from stating the obvious, and rubbed a paw over her ear, "proper means returning. Getting help ain't dishonorable." Eyes were trailing around from the area the wood splintered off, falling downwards into below. She wasn't sure if falling would cause death or injury, but didn't want to see a body upon the floors.

A large paw stepped forward to the bridge, a creaking sound came from it and immediately she withdrew a paw, a skeptical look upon it. She didn't think she was that fat.

Her heart was launching itself back and forth within her chest. She heard the words and what went unsaid, her brain forming the pieces. Stupid, weak, weak, cripple. It was there. Ynness looked at the woman gravelly, scoffing as the woman hesitated stepping forward. “I'm not gonna wait for you. You said go, an' I'm goin',” Ynness didn't understand what the woman hoped to achieve. She could barely center herself on the bridge, how could she come over and help her? She took another step back — no, she wasn't that far from the edge. This would be fine. She was almost there. Just another step, another step, another...

When her half-mangled paw met rock and soil instead of wood she let out a breath of relief, then made the awkward shuffling movements required to put her center of gravity back on land. Her heart still raced, and her breath matched. She felt as if she had run for miles rather than scuttled back and forth on a bridge.

Stepping further back, she sat down with a rather grump and used her leg to scratch and irritable ear. An eye toward the youngling who was stubborn in her ways, and at the point there was a thought that occurred.. If she fell, no one would really know, would they? It was an irritation that technically Orlaith could leave without anyone nagging her, but she wasn't as cold-hearted as to be assumed, and felt guilty on the very thought, "You're stubborn."

Though as she crossed the thought of going through that.. Bridge once more, the other made it across, "Ya gonna leave now?"

Even as she huffed, her eyes remained on the woman, still distant from her. Ynness felt a pang of jealous surge through her as she saw the woman, so casually and effortlessly, scratch her ear with her hind leg. Her words didn't reach her at first. When they did squeeze through the emotional wall that Ynness' consciousness was surrounded with, it only stoked the fire further. The anger had superseded the exhaustion. She stood straight as she could and locked eyes with the woman. “Yes.” With that, she turned tail and hobbled back from whence she came, stewing in rage, embarrassment, and exhaustion.

"Find your mama, yeah?" Normally Orlaith would personally escort them, though the unstability that was the bridge brought a bit reluctance on the matter. That, and since it was a child, one that was heavily disabled in how she was - not like much would happen regardless. The smell of any other wolves seemed to be rather away, causing an assumption her family was perhaps nearby, but not within the Ullarcraig. If it was the case, it wasn't really her business anymore. She sniffled lightly.

But she would stay at this spot until the other would at least leave the area.. And try to find a way around this.. Oddity. Her paw occasionally touched at the wood that hung between the two areas, and eyes wandering from the child, to what was below. It an odd contraption for a 'bridge' of sorts to go between, though looked to fall at any point. The other even went across, and saw that wood chips were falling off.. Orlaith didn't even want to try and cross. She would rather roam the mountains to find another way around.

"Get going shrimp."
