Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

Ivory's tail flicked. Her eyes fluttered open as she stretched out her limbs. Her bones ached as if she hadn't moved in weeks. Ivory closed her eyes again, willing the dull gnawing to stop. She remained still for a moment, but when it was clear that the lethargy was here to stay, she forced herself to open her eyes once more.
Colours twisted and warped in front of her eyes. Clouds of different coloured fog appeared and disappeared, and the ground tilted on its side. Blinding white light made Ivory flinch. She slitted her eyes and stared intently at her own paws, something she was sure weren't an illusion. The land snapped back to its axis, and Ivory looked up.

This wasn't her home.

Yellow-green grass was fanned out around her, bundling around willowy trees. Her eyes widened as they trailed up to the canopy of wisteria flowers, a soft breeze rippling the pink and purple blossoms. Ivory slowly climbed to her paws, craning her neck to sniff the flowers.

They were so pretty.

Broken, distorted memories swam in front of her eyes. Or were they just dreams? Nothing seemed like it could be real, but neither did the forest in which she stood now. The blossoms smelled so sweet, so soft. She could scent safety in the branches, but she knew, she knew that this wasn't a place she had been before. Everything was blank, concealed by a haze in her mind. There wasn't anything there. There wasn't anything she could draw from to work out where she was, who she was.
Ivory blinked, shoving those thoughts far away from her. She dropped her head and spun around in a circle, inspecting her surroundings. Tall green and red trees, perfect fruit hanging from the branches. Soft waves of wind rustled the leaves and petals.
Quiet birdsong echoed from above, and Ivory tried to croak out a response.

"H-hello," she rasped, voice coming out harsh and painful. She tried to clear her throat, hacking on something that wasn't even there.

“You're awake!”

He was loud, probably especially so to someone who had just woken up; his tail waved behind him, pale eyes bright with gratitude that finally, after walking for what felt like an eternity (it was only a few hours), he had found someone. Maybe she was awful. Maybe she'd killed someone. Maybe she was the sweetest thing since honey.

Sitka. Didn't. Care.

He lingered there and waited for her to wake up anyway, gathering what apples he could from the vicinity and building a small pile of them, if only to keep himself busy.

“I'm Sitka,” He announced easily, a head that once proudly supported a growing rack of antlers tilter, waiting for her own response as he absently rolled an apple beneath his paw.

"You're awake!" A voice behind her exclaimed.
Ivory leapt back. She hadn't even noticed the wolf who stood mere metres away from her. He grinned at her as his tail wagged behind him. She straightened up, the golden-red wolf not seeming dangerous in the slightest. Ivory tilted her head at him, trying to read his body language. She smiled nervously, trying to shake off the confusion and distortion she was feeling. She forced a quick smile, still on edge after discovering how easily he had snuck up on her.
The wolf had created a small pile of apples he must have found on the ground.

Were they... to eat?

Ivory wasn't sure she'd risk that. The wolf absentmindedly rolled an apple back and forth between his paws. His voice was quite loud, and although he wasn't shouting, Ivory's ears rang. Another side effect from waking up... wherever she was? She didn't know.
"I'm Sitka," he said happily, bowing his head slightly in greeting.
Ivory laughed at the absurdity of everything that had happened in the minutes she had found herself here.

"Hello," she tried, coughing once more to remove the gravelly tone from her voice, "Hello, it's nice to meet you Sitka! I'm Ivory," she said brightly.

Was she? Was that her name?

He wouldn't know how glad she was to know that she wasn't alone. To know that she hadn't appeared in a strange land by herself.
She stepped towards Sitka, keeping her tail held low so as to not antagonise him.

"You don't... you don't happen to know where we are, do you?" Ivory asked, more frightened of his response than she cared to admit. If Sitka wasn't sure, what were the chances she'd find anyone else who did?

He didn't really know why he gathered the apples, other than something tickled the back of his brain when he did. The action felt familiar, safe, comforting; like something he had done a long time ago, but... that wasn't possible... Was it?

His head tilted at her when she laughed, then cleared her throat, though his tail continued to wave enthusiastically behind him. Ivory. She had a pretty name. Almost as unique as his. A pretty laugh, too. She was very pretty, really. But Sitka didn't care too much about that, only noticed it in passing.

“Nope! No clue, honestly. I woke up a little ways away, followed the smell of apples, and found you!” Where there was fear and worry in her voice, there was none in his own. His father would have told him that he was too stupid to be scared, too vapid. How much truth lay in such a claim remained to be seen.
