Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

outsiders welcome since she's on the shore!

Almalexia was growing and with it the world seemed to as well.

She had seen her mother walk across the sandbar before, to the island that was dark and shrouded. She wanted to go there, to see the dark stones and touch the ebony sands. Perhaps if she had just asked...but she hadn't. Instead she skulk across the edge of the island as she glared out across the waters.

She dared to test the edges of the saltwater, toes pressed into the sand beneath the shallows.

A head turned back to look over her shoulder — immediately expecting a mother to come scold her.

Outsiders still welcome!

She drifted after his sister without much more purpose than a bee would bumble from flower to flower. She had begun the slow but steady gaining of weight as she and her siblings approached the six month mark. Already, she was a touch thicker than them, a bit heavier where they were yet a bit willowy. Perhaps it was because she spent so much time swimming in the protected shallows, under the watchful eyes of her mothers, or perhaps it was simply genetics. All Calypso knew was that she was bigger, but not taller, than her siblings.

“It's so different looking,” She said with curious observation, slowly plodding up to Alma's side. “Have you asked them, yet?” Had her sister mentioned wanting to go? She couldn't remember. But she could see the longing dancing in Almalexia's eyes, the tension of not knowing singing along her frame.

She blinked at her sister, as if she had just spoken the most earth shattering words.

Ask. So simple and yet Almalexia had stilled her tongue. If she never asked, she could never hear no. Not that such was a word she heard often but...she had never asked to go beyond their island. Even to the closest places. Their trees and cove were the safest places in the planet. The universe, perhaps.

“No.” Her voice soft in the back of her throat. Her gaze turned from her sister out towards the not-so-distant island again. “But you feel it, don't you? It's calling.” It rallied something within her. It felt like when her mother's howled or when her name was called after dark. A summoning song.

“I've seen them go out there.” Which meant it must be ok, right? “I bet they know, I bet they feel it too.”

There was a creeping fervor in her voice.

Alma looked like an owl suddenly, what with her gleaming saffron eyes opened so widely in surprise. Callie could not help but giggle softly, a thick paw lifting to cover her mouth briefly. Her sister was so straight forward, almost the opposite of the dreamy Calypso, who constantly seemed as if she was happily floating away in a daydream. Maybe she was. Maybe it was all an illusion. But it was such a pretty, happy illusion.

“Yes...” Her eyes fell on the island again for a moment before they slipped closed, her nose lifting slightly into the air, ears turning towards the distant shore. If she focused, if she listened, she could hear it, hear the low hum of... something. Was she imagining it? Or was it real? “The island sings,” She said softly, voice almost lost to the winds of the ocean. It was so... enticing, so alluring...

“Let's go,” She said, looking to Almalexia, as if it was the easiest thing in the world.
