Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

The sun hung high in the sky, highlighting the midpoint in the day, where it oversaw all there was to see. A perfect time to steal away for a little nap in a sunspot. Conveniently, there had been a special spot right on the beach, in the sand, beneath a tree, where the sun filtered in nicely. The sound of the ocean created a nice lullaby for the sea witch, who never liked to stray too far from the ocean-side. And soon after curling underneath the tree, sleep found her and brought her to a place she'd been once before.

Maui found herself awaking to the side of the river where giant leaf boats swayed through the water freely, yet in a steady roll downstream. She wondered. A few littered the sides of the river, ready to be taken off into the water. Maui had been on a boat, or something like it, before, but nothing like a plant boat. She would be putting a lot of trust into a dream... Albeit, a dream that wasn't really a dream, but an alternate reality. Nonetheless, it didn't completely bug her. Just like a dream, it would be washed away when she woke up, no matter how real it (and those in it) felt.

Curiosity got the better of her, which in the end, it always did, and she took a step into the "boat". It swayed in the water, holding up underneath the weight of her one paw. And so, she did another, and another, until she was all the way in the boat. Though it didn't start to move just yet, she stood there, examining, wondering what it would take to get it rolling...

In her dreams the Silverflame could soar in the sky as she had done for centuries past. Swallowing the land with her great shadow as she flew under the sun, feeling its golden rays soaking into her scales and making them sparkle like diamonds. Then she awoke once more as Endellion the wolf shaped dragon and despite her excitement for her new life there was a bitter sting of disappointment at all she had lost. Her odd eyes took in her surroundings, blinking once then twice. Was she still dreaming? Perhaps it was one of those lucid dreams her humans had told her about. If it was then it was the first time she had ever experienced such a thing.

Endellion approached the waters edge, and was momentarily stunned to see a wolf riding on a leaf like one of those wooden contraptions that humans liked to sail in. “My mind conjures some curious sights,” she murmured to herself and rubbed her eyes with a large white paw. A wolf surfing on a leaf was not at all what she expected to see in her dreams, especially not at her age. It seemed more like the wild imagination of a hatchling rather than an ancient dragons’.

Maui was lost in the intricacies of the leaf boat, her head tucked down, studying the fibers of it, nose huffing in each and every inch it could. Of course, she knew there wasn't a full explanation to it — right? It was a dream after all, but with nothing else to do nor a soul in sight; the spirit of curiosity (one that cursed Maui often and mostly got her in more trouble than anything) reigned over her.

It wasn't until a voice rang out that her head jerked upward, eyes trying to find the figure that had spoken. And then, there she was, rubbing at her eyes with a paw as if to make sure this was real. Maui chuckled at her, “You mean, ya don't dream of sailing women every night?” She questioned, the lines of her lips quirking upwards into a smirk. “Sounds like more of a loss than anythin'.” Not that Maui dreamt of sailing women every night, but most dreams did include women. They were in no short supply.

“C'mon 'n don't just ya watch. Live.” Well, as much as they could in a dream world. Maui beckoned the woman with a waving paw, the boat steady as it waited for another counterpart.

The dream woman spoke to her with an accent that confused her and her ancient mind had to slow down the sounds so she could correctly translate what was being spoken. Endellion had met many humans during her long life as a dragon, but they had all spoken the words without skipping them over. She was both fascinated and bemused at how her imagination could have created such a tongue. “I dream of soaring through the skies and scorching the earth black until everything is cinders and ashes,” Endellion answered honestly. Every dragon was a little bit of a pyromaniac.

“Why would I dream of floating leaf wolves?” the dragon-wolf asked, genuinely wanting to know if there was some grand meaning to this dream and why it was a loss that it hadn't happened before.

“I will stay here,” she insisted, eying the leaf and then the water with a slight wrinkle forming on her muzzle. Water was the enemy of fire and dragons were creatures born from flames. She knew the water would not harm her, especially in a dream, but her natural disdain (definitely not fear) made her reluctant to approach the waters edge.
